    Rising steeply from the dry grasslands of southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico, the Chiricahuas present a verdant, forested island in a sea of desert. Many species of trees, shrubs, and flowering herbs clothe steep canyon walls. Shady glens, alive with birds, are sheltered by rows of strange massive spires, turrets, and battlements in this fascinating wonderland of rocks. Story of the rocks-What geological forces created these striking and peculiar pinnacles and balanced rocks? Geolo- gists explain that millions of years ago volcanic activity was extensive throughout this region. A series of explosive eruptions, alternating with periods of inactivity, covered the area with layers of white-hot volcanic ash that welded into rock. Because the eruptions varied in magnitude, the deposits were of different thicknesses. Finally, the eruptions ceased, followed by movements in the earth's crust which slowly lifted and tilted great rock masses to form mountains. The stresses responsible for the movements caused a definite pattern of cracks. Along the vertical cracks and planes of horizontal weakness, ero- sion by weathering and running water began its persistent work. Cracks were widened to form fissures; and fissures grew to breaches. At the same time, under-cutting slowly took place. Gradually the lava masses were cut by millions of ero- sional channels into blocks of myriad sizes and shapes, to be further sculptured by the elements. Shallow canyons became deeper and more rugged as time passed. Weathered rock formed soil, which collected in pockets; and plants thus gained a foothold. Erosion is still going on slowly and persistently among the great pillared cliffs of the monument.

    REVIEWS OF BOOKS History of Stearns County, Minnesota. By WILLIAM BELL MITCHELL. In two volumes. (Chicago, H. C. Cooper Jr. and Company, 1915. xv, xii, 1536 p. Illustrated) These two formidable-looking volumes, comprising some fif­ teen hundred pages in all, are an important addition to the literature of Minnesota local history. The author is himself a pioneer. Coming to Minnesota in 1857, he worked as surveyor, teacher, and printer until such time as he was able to acquire the St. Cloud Democrat. He later changed the name of the paper to the St. Cloud lournal, and, after his purchase of the St. Cloud Press in 1876, consolidated the two under the name St. Cloud Journal-Press, of which he remained editor and owner until 1892. During this period he found time also to discharge the duties of receiver of the United States land office at St. Cloud, and to serve as member of the state normal board. It would appear, then, that Mr. Mitchell, both by reason of his long resi­ dence in Stearns County and of his editorial experience, was preeminently fitted for the task of writing the volumes under review. Moreover, he has had the assistance of many of the prominent men of the county in preparing the general chapters of the work. Among these may be noted chapters 2-6, dealing with the history of Minnesota as a whole during the pre-territorial period, by Dr. P. M. Andrews) Postbellum African American fiction provides an index to the complex attitudes toward social status and class divisions that arose within post -Civil War black communities. As I argue, African American narratives in the last quarter of the nineteenth century encode the discourse of class in discussions of respectability, labor, and discrimination. Conceiving of class as a concept that does not necessarily denote economic conditions, both well -known and largely ignored narrativ es of the period emphasize moral and ideological parameters for judging social distinctions. Bertonneau Published online: 13 October 2010 # Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2010 Popular culture courses first appeared in the college and university curriculum in social science and humanities departments in the late 1950s in response to the Frankfurt School critique of the postwar bourgeois order. The Frankfurt School critics, Herbert Marcuse, Erich Fromm, Hannah Arendt, Max Horkheimer, and Theodor W. Adorno, were in turn responding to Karl Marx, Friedrich Nietzsche, Sigmund Freud, and Walter Benjamin. As a discipline, “popular culture studies” (shortened in recent years to “culture studies”) began as a disestablishmentarian enterprise pursued by activist intellectuals of left-liberal disposition. The names of Richard Hoggart and Raymond Williams are important as successors to the Frankfurt School figures and as contemporary cue-givers of the discipline. The scholar-radicals typically construed nineteenth-century civic custom—and even more so, twentieth-century bourgeois culture—as ideology, using the term in its Marxist sense as the expression of a false and freedom-limiting conscious- ness that impedes progress. In English departments and other departments where the study of literature was in order, interest in genre fiction was a going concern, with dedicated courses by the mid-1970s at the latest. So it was that, when I resumed matriculation toward my baccalaureate in the summer of 1983 at UCLA, I enrolled in an English department offering taught by the then young Raymond Paredes (now a dean) dedicated to the American Popular Novel Since World War Two, or some similar rubric.

    This page intentionally left blank MARRIAGE, VIOLENCE, AND THE NATION IN THE AMERICAN LITERARY WEST In Marriage, Violence, and the Nation in the American Literary West, William R. Handley examines literary interpretations of the western American past. Handley argues that although recent scholarship provides a narrative of western history that counters the optimistic story of frontier individualism by focusing on the victims of con- quest, twentieth-century American fiction tells a different story of intra-ethnic violence, surrounding marriages and families. He ex- amines works of historiography, as well as writing by Zane Grey, Willa Cather, Wallace Stegner, and Joan Didion among others, to argue that these works highlight white Americans’ anxiety about what happens to American “character” when domestic enemies such as Indians and Mormon polygamists, against whom the nation had defined itself in the nineteenth century, no longer threaten its homes.
