TEAM NOTES:

COMEBACK KIDS The Penguins improved to 3-0-0 against the Rangers after Saturday night’s win, with all three wins coming after Pittsburgh trailed following the second period. The Penguins three wins this year when trailing after the second period are tied with Winnipeg for the most in the NHL:

Wins When Trailing After the Second Period Team Wins Pittsburgh 3 Winnipeg 3 Vegas 2 Minnesota 2 Nashville 1 Boston 1 All Other Teams 0

Pittsburgh is also 2-0-0 when tied after the second period. The Penguins five wins when either trailing or tied after the second period are most in the NHL.

CAPTAIN CLUTCH Captain Sidney Crosby came through in clutch yet again for the Penguins on Saturday, securing the team two points with his 18th career overtime goal. Crosby’s league-leading second overtime goal of the year doubled as his 18th career overtime tally, surpassing Ilya Kovalchuk for third place on the NHL’s all-time overtime goals list:

Player OTG Alex Ovechkin 24 Jaromir Jagr 19 Sidney Crosby 18 Ilya Kovalchuk 17 Two Players 16

The goal was also Crosby’s 35th overtime point, moving him into a tie with Jaromir Jagr for third place on the NHL’s all-time points list. Only Patrik Elias (37) and Alex Ovechkin (37) have more points in the extra frame than Crosby.

Per NHLPR, Saturday marked the first time in league history that three former first overall picks each scored an overtime goal in the same night (Crosby, Ovechkin, Connor McDavid).

THE P.O SHOW The bad news: Pittsburgh’s blueline has been decimated by injuries. The good news: Pierre-Olivier Joseph is the real deal.

After Kris Letang left the game in the first period on Saturday due to injury and with five blueliners already sidelined due to various injuries, rookie P.O Joseph stepped up in his fifth career game, recording three assists and skated a career-high 25:58 minutes. Joseph’s three assists tie a single-game franchise record for assists by a rookie defenseman, and he is one of just nine rookie blueliners in team history to record three or more points in a game.

Pittsburgh’s last three-plus point performance from a rookie defenseman was Alex Goligoski (2G-1A) on Dec. 22, 2008. Joseph is also one of just three NHL rookies this season to have a three-point game, joining Chicago’s Pius Suter (Jan. 24, 3G) and Minnesota’s Kirill Kaprizov (Jan. 14, 1G-2A).

NEXT MAN UP On Saturday against New York, Kris Letang left the game due to a lower-body injury. If Letang is unable to suit up tonight, Pittsburgh will be without six defensemen due to various injuries, four of whom were in the Penguins’ top-6 on opening night. Below is a look at the total number of games played by the Penguins injured defensemen, versus the potential six that could suit up tonight:

Injured Defensemen Player GP Career GP w/PIT Kris Letang 817 817 Brian Dumoulin 354 354 Mike Matheson 301 2 Marcus Pettersson 179 130 Zach Trotman 91 24 Juuso Riikola 75 75 Total: 1,817 1,402

Despite the constant shuffling, Pittsburgh currently sits fourth in the division with 11 points, having picked up at least one point in six of nine games this season (5-3-1).

INTERIM GM, PATRIK ALLVIN On Jan. 27, it was announced that Patrik Allvin would assume the role of interim general manager of the Penguins following Jim Rutherford’s resignation. The 46-year old native of Falun, Sweden is in his 15th season with the Penguins hockey operations staff, having started as a scout in 2006- 07. He also served as director of amateur scouting from 2017-20. Allvin is the first Swedish-born general manager in NHL history.

Allvin picked up his first win as interim GM on Jan. 30, a 5-4 overtime win at Madison Square Garden against the Rangers.
