THE KRAMLICH RESIDENCE AND COLLECTION LOOKING TO THE FUTURE WITH A HOME FOR MEDIA ART

Working with the star architects Herzog & de Meuron, the collectors Richard and Pamela Kramlich of California built an extremely modern home for themselves and their remarkable collection of media art.

Berlin, April 3, 2019 – The newly released book The Kramlich Residence and Collection explores the evolution of the Napa Valley, California, residence of American art collectors Pamela and Richard Kramlich. Designed by Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron, the Kramlich Residence serves as a home for the couple, a dedicated space for their pioneering collection, and a testing ground for innovation in presenting, living with, and experiencing media art. Featuring essays and conversations with historians, curators, artists and architects, and new photographic commissions, each contribution in the book explores distinct experiences of the project and the new ideas generated from the intersections of architecture, nature, moving images, sound, and spaces to live and gather.

For over three decades, Pamela and Richard Kramlich have assembled a vanguard collection of media art, recognized internationally as one of the most signifcant collections of its kind. Comprising over 200 works spanning from the 1960s to the present day, the collection encompasses a diverse range of media including video, flm, slide and photography, as well as related sculpture, painting and drawing. Its holdings include key pieces by an international group of contemporary artists, including Marina Abramovic, , Pierre Huyghe, , Richard Mosse, , Shirin Neshat and . Alongside the development of their collection, the Kramlichs’ commitment to the feld is further refected by their ongoing support of the New Art Trust, a non-proft they established in 1997 to foster the research, presentation and conservation of media art, in partnership with The Museum of Modern Art (New York), SFMOMA, and Tate (UK).

The Kramlich Residence was conceived as a home for both the Kramlichs and their collection, embracing a fuidity between art and private life and setting an unprecedented model for how to present and live with media art. Designed by Herzog & de Meuron and developed over the course of two decades, the Residence features a crystalline pavilion that balances transparency and shelter, connected via a spiral rotunda and staircase to a series of museum-grade gallery spaces below ground. In the galleries, which are customizable to accommodate the specifc needs of the range of art on view, works are viewed one-at-a-time and at a pace dictated by the works themselves, fostering thoughtful consideration of each. Throughout the project and since its completion, the Kramlich Residence has been a laboratory of ideas not only for the architects, but also for the artists and artworks that today engage with its spaces.

The Kramlich Residence and Collection chronicles the journey of this major architectural project and art collection in detail with contributions by Pamela and Richard Kramlich, Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron, Aebhric Coleman, Nicholas Olsberg, Nicholas Serota, Dara Birnbaum and Lynne Cooke. The book also features new photographic commissions by artists Lothar Baumgarten, Luisa Lambri and Catherine Wagner.
