Media Contacts Tyler Mahowald | [email protected] Justin Conner | [email protected] Alice Chung | [email protected] THE BROAD LAUNCHES UNPRECEDENTED SURVEY OF GROUNDBREAKING ARTIST SHIRIN NESHAT The Artist’s Largest Survey to Date and First Major Exhibition of Her Work in the Western U.S. Will Be on View October 19, 2019–February 16, 2020 in Los Angeles LOS ANGELES—This fall, The Broad will launch a new survey—the largest held to date—of internationally acclaimed artist Shirin Neshat’s work. The exhibition, Shirin Neshat: I Will Greet the Sun Again, will be on view from October 19, 2019, through February 16, 2020, and is the renowned multidisciplinary artist’s first major exhibition to take place in the western United States. The artist has been in the Broad collection for 20 years, beginning with the 1999 acquisition of Rapture (1999)—the first multiscreen video installation to enter the collection. Originated by The Broad, this exhibition surveys approximately 30 years of Neshat’s dynamic video works and photography, investigating the artist’s passionate engagement with ancient and recent Iranian history, the experience of living in exile and the human impact of political revolution. Taking its title from a poem by Iranian poet Forugh Farrokhzad (1934–67), the exhibition begins with her most famous body of work, Women of Allah (1993–97) and features the global debut of Land of Dreams, a new, multi-faceted project that was completed this past summer in New Mexico, and encompasses two videos and a body of photographs. Arranged chronologically, Shirin Neshat: I Will Greet the Sun Again presents over 230 photographs and eight video installations, including iconic video works such as Rapture, Turbulent (1998) and Passage (2001), journeying from works that address specific events in contemporary Iran, both before and after the Islamic Revolution, to work that increasingly uses metaphor and ancient Persian history and literature to reflect on universal concerns of gender, political borders and rootedness. -

She seeks to raise visibility and financial support from individuals, collectors, foundations and companies for her American Art from 1800 – 1950 project. Three years ago when the Museum embarked on finding U.S. donors for their exhibition trilogy that will open in Hamburg, Vienna und Zurich starting in 2008 the term “Friendraising Dinner” was pretty novel. That’s different today. In light of diminishing state support overseas for arts, culture, science and education the strong U.S. culture of philanthropy increasingly attracts international nonprofit leaders’ attention. “When talking with German clients I notice that interest in international fundraising is rising. Yet, nonprofit management tends to be oblivious to the fact that it is relatively simple to create the technical and legal framework that will allow them to qualify for US donations - and to attain tax exemption for U.S. donations,” comments Steffen Lang, Relationship Manager at Deutsche Bank Private Wealth Management in New York. Tax exemption is a prerequisite for fundraising in the United States. International organizations have a couple of options: It can be advisable to set up a Donor-Advised Fund via an organization such as the King Baudouin Foundation United States or Charities Aid. -

Artistic Subversions: Setting the Conditions of Display (Amsterdam, 2-4 Feb 17) Amsterdam, Feb 2–04, 2017 Deadline: Aug 30, 2016 Katja Kwastek Preceding the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam’s ‘Lose Yourself! – A Symposium on Labyrinthine Exhibitions as Curatorial Model’(03.-04.02.2017) this young researchers’ colloquium (02.02.2017) at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam will consider the strategies and methods by which artists take control over the space of installation. Without the artist’s permission Triple Candie, an exhibition space in New York, featured a retro- spective of Maurizio Cattelan. Entitled Maurizio Cattelan is Dead: Life & Work, 1960-2009 (2009), the show did not include a single work by the artist. Instead, it brought together a selection of pho- tocopied images from previous exhibitions with (vaguely recognizable) replicas of works by the artist. Cattelan, still very much alive, urged the Deste Foundation – established by Dakis Joannou, a prodigious collector of Cattelan’s work – to acquire the entirety of the show. In the foundation in Athens it was later installed in a room expressly selected by the artist. By repositioning the show in a new space of his own devise, Cattelan altered the conditions of its setting thereby incorporat- ing the complete exhibition into his oeuvre. This anecdote demonstrates a blurring of authorship between the artist and the curator, but it is also indicative of the significance of the setting of art, or its context, to its interpretation. This shift in emphasis to the conditions of display can be traced at least as far back as the Exposition Internationale du Surréalisme (1938). -

The theme “Video installations in the public space” is the understanding of the essence of video and space and its aspects through the production of various spatial solutions and practical imaging solutions in the field of video art. The subject of the study is essence of the problem. In the case of this study the object is the video installations, and the subject is the process of their creation, and the concept of environment. The whole range of phenomena studied is related to the works of video art, their development and expression of opportunities and the idea of environment is an aspect of exploring the space in which they are presented. A guide for holders of the International Association of Art card Prepared with contributions from the Slovak Union of Visual Arts (Slovenská výtvarná únia) 2017 The International Association of Art (IAA/AIAP) is a non-governmental organization working in official partnership with UNESCO. Its objectives are to stimulate international cooperation among visual artists of all countries, nations or peoples, to improve the socio-economic position of artists nationally and internationally, and to defend their material and moral rights. The IAA issues identity cards to professional visual artists. This card allows free or discounted admission to many galleries and museums in countries around the world. The card is a tool for the lifelong education of artists in their professional artistic research. These institutions, large or small, recognize the benefit they gain from enabling the artists, like art critics and journalists, to visit exhibitions, art events and collections of art, to carry on research, and to gain inspiration. As a member within the IAA network, CARFAC National issues IAA cards exclusively to Canadian professional artists that are members of CARFAC upon request. Only National Committees of the IAA may issue the card. Where to use the IAA card This document includes a chart detailing selected institutions that offer free or discounted admission prices, or other perks to IAA card holders while travelling abroad. This information was obtained from surveying recent users of the card and IAA National Committees worldwide, and is updated regularly – most recently in 2017 by the Slovak Union of Visual Arts (SUVA). Users will find that different areas in Europe are more receptive to the card than others. -

The EU Film Industry in the Spotlight at the Venice International Film Festival
The EU film industry in the spotlight at the Venice International Film Festival Five films which have been awarded EU funding are competing in the prestigious 72nd Venice International Film Festival between 2 and 9 September. The European Commission has invested around €260,000 through the Creative Europe MEDIA programme to support the development and distribution of these films, which are taking part in the Official Selection and Orizzonti competitions. Venice Film Festival Films in the Official selection Three EU-supported films will be shown as world premieres in the Venezia 72 competition for feature films: Marguerite, 1921, a big castle not far from Paris. Marguerite, the owner, is affluent and devotes all of her time to her passion: music. Loosely based on the life of the American soprano Florence Foster Jenkins, who became famous between 1930 and 1940 thanks to her poor singing skills, the film is a French, Czech and Belgian co-production, directed by Xavier Giannoli. It stars Catherine Frot, André Marcon, Michel Fau, Christa Théret, Denis Mpunga, Sylvain Dieuaide. A Bigger Splash, this thriller feature the rock star Marianne Lane and Paul, her film director fiancé, who are on holiday in Pantelleria. The sudden visit of Harry, and his daughter Penelope, will drag all the characters into a whirlpool of passion and jealousy. A remake of the French detective film La piscine (1968), this is an Italian, French production starring Tilda Swinton, Ralph Fiennes, Matthias Schoenaerts, Dakota Johnson, Corrado Guzzanti, directed by Luca Guadagnino. L’Hermine, the story starts the day before a trial: during the hearing, something extraordinary will happen and will change everything. -

ART ASSIGNMENT SHIRIN NESHAT I WILL GREET THE SUN AGAIN In conjunction with Shirin Neshat: I Will Greet the Sun Again, the Modern’s education department and Akin White are pleased to present this Art Assignment packet for high school students and educators. This packet is a supplement to the gallery experience and offers background information on the artist and work, as well as ideas to consider while engaging in the art project. Shirin Neshat was born in Qazvin, Iran, a small city two hours from Tehran, in 1957. Shirin Neshat: I Will Greet the Sun Again surveys approximately 30 years of the artist’s video works and photography, investigating her passionate engagement with ancient and recent Iranian history. The experience of living in exile and the human impact of political revolution are also explored by Neshat. The exhibition takes its title from a poem by the Iranian poet Forugh Farrokhzad (1934–1967). I Will Greet the Sun Again begins with Neshat’s most famous body of work, Women of Allah, 1993–97, and also features her early iconic video works such as Rapture, 1999, Turbulent, 1998, and Passage, 2001. Monumental photography installations include The Book of Kings, 2012, The Home of My Eyes, 2015, and Land of Dreams, 2019, a new, ambitious work encompassing a photographic series and video.
