• 35 YE 21 AR 0 S 2 BERKSHIRE JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL 2021 marks the 35th anniversary of the Berkshire Jewish Film Festival. The brainchild of Dr. Zev Raviv, the festival was led by Margie Metzger for 30 years. For the first 20 years, the films were shown on a 16mm projector at Knesset Israel in either the Sanctuary or the Social Hall. At the very beginning, a crowd of 25 was considered a success. Amy Abramovich helped run the concession where people could buy ice cream and other goodies. Because it was (and still is) a fundraiser for the Knesset Israel Hebrew School, it was important to involve the students, and each year a contest was held to design the program cover. The tide turned with the screening of the documenta- ry, The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg. There was stand- ing room only and it was then that public perception of the film festival changed. And the rest is history! Over these past 35 years, the BJFF has shown hundreds of films to thousands of people. Last year with the pan- demic forcing us to close the theater doors, we were able to continue as a virtual festival showing films online and engaging our audience members with Zoom talkbacks. This year we are celebrating with a full seven weeks of programming. Including the five short films being shown on August 9th, we are offering eighteen films in total. Our films range from political documentaries and biographies to comedies, heartfelt family stories, and animation. We couldn’t run this festival without our loyal volunteers. -

Los Angeles Times: Departures of Ann Martin and Harold Green may signal a shift Page 1 of 2 http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/tv/la-et-anchor11apr11,0,5163862.story From the Los Angeles Times Departures of Ann Martin and Harold Green may signal a shift Local newscasts seem to be turning away from high-priced anchors By Greg Braxton Los Angeles Times Staff Writer April 11, 2008 Like the Hollywood sign and the Cinerama Dome, KCBS-TV Channel 2 news anchors Ann Martin and Harold Greene were fixtures of Hollywood, hard to miss on huge billboards plastered on the station's former headquarters as they smiled down on travelers zooming along Sunset Boulevard. Mainstays on the local news for more than three decades at two stations -- the pair had also been partners at KABC-TV Channel 7's "Eyewitness News" -- Martin and Greene were reflective of the celebrity status bestowed upon anchors, the most visible and highest-paid members of Los Angeles news operations. Even their moves to rival KCBS -- Martin in 1994, Greene in 2001 -- created their own buzz, particularly for Martin, whose salary was reported to be between $1.2 million and $2 million a year. But last week the longtime newscasters themselves became an L.A. story once again. The couple was let go by KCBS, part of a swarm of budget cuts at CBS affiliates nationwide. Their unexpected ouster crystallized a growing suspicion within the local news market -- that in a world of 24/7 cable news and intensifying competition from the Internet, local big- name anchors may no longer be necessary or even relevant. -

Does Media Concentration Lead to Biased Coverage? Evidence from Movie Reviews∗ Stefano DellaVigna Alec Kennedy UC Berkeley and NBER San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank [email protected] [email protected] September 14, 2011 Abstract Fueled by the need to cut costs in a competitive industry, media companies have be- come increasingly concentrated. But is this consolidation without costs for the quality of information? Concentrated media companies generate a conflict of interest: a media outlet can bias its coverage to benefit companies in the same group. We test empirically for bias by examining movie reviews by media outlets owned by News Corp.–such as the Wall Street Journal–and by Time Warner–such as Time.Wefind a statistically significant, if small, bias in the review score for 20th Century Fox movies in the News Corp. outlets. We detect no bias for Warner Bros. movies in the reviews of the Time Warner outlets, but find instead some evidence of bias by omission: the media in this group are more likely to review highly-rated movies by affiliated studios. Using the wealth of detail in the data, we present evidence regarding bias by individual reviewer, and also biases in the editorial assignment of review tasks. We conclude that reputation limits the extent of bias due to conflict of interest, but that nonetheless powerful biasing forces are at work due to consolidation in the media industry. ∗PRELIMINARY AND INCOMPLETE, DO NOT CITE WITHOUT PERMISSION. Clark Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts June 2018 An Abstract of the Thesis of Dana Alston for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in the Department of Cinema Studies to be taken June 2018 Title: Capturing Turmoil: New Hollywood as Political Discourse Approved: _______________________________________ Dr. Erin Hanna This thesis is an argumentative close analysis of themes, aesthetics, and political meanings within three New Hollywood films. It emerged out of an interest in the films of the 1960s and 70s and the changes within that era’s film industry. Those changes granted young, educated filmmaker opportunities to helm studio-driven projects, weaving material into their narratives that would have been impossible in a system ruled by the Hollywood Production Code. The era also included significant social and political unrest, and the films therein reflect that reality. In this project, I perform content analyses for three films within the New Hollywood movement — Bonnie and Clyde (1967), Dog Day Afternoon (1975), and Nashville (1975) — in order to understand how films in the movement used themes of celebrity, violence, and oppression to act as a form of discourse. All three films employ on-screen violence to complicate the audience’s initial assumptions of characters, and each film critiques the social and political issues of its time through this violence. For each analysis, I discuss several sequences’ mise-en-scène — the arrangement of elements within the entire frame — and connect them to broad socio-political ideas. -
