1 PRE-HISTORIC INDIA AND THE HARAPPAN CULTURE History is a narration of the events which have happened among mankind, including an account of the rise and fall of nations, as well as of other great changes which have affected the political and social condition of the human race. Herodotus was a Greek historian who was born in Halicarnassus, Caria (Turkey) and lived in the fifth century BC (484-425 BC), a contemporary of Socrates. He is widely referred to as The Father of History. PRE-HISTORIC PHASE/STONE AGE The history of human settlements in India goes back to prehistoric times. Prehistory means literally before history. Human prehistory is the period from the time that behaviorally and anatomically modern humans first appear until the appearance of recorded history following the invention of writing systems. Sumer in Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt were the first civilisations to develop their own scripts, and to keep historical records; this took place already during the early Bronze Age. No written records are available for the prehistoric period. However, plenty of archaeological remains are found in different parts of India to reconstruct the history of this period. They include the stone tools, pottery, artifacts and metal implements used by prehistoric people. The Stone Age was a broad prehistoric period during which stone was widely used to make implements with a sharp edge, a point, or a percussion surface. The period lasted roughly 3.4 million years, and ended between 6000 BC and 2000 BC with the advent of metal-working. IN INDIA, THE PREHISTORIC PERIOD IS DIVIDED INTO The dating of the prehistoric period is done scientifically.
