  • Black Claus Is Black Pete
Black Claus is Black Pete The Schenkman confusion A majority of contemporary authors assume that the Dutch holiday season character of Black Pete has been created by the nineteenth century schoolmaster Jan Schenkman in his book “Sint Nikolaas en zijn knecht1 ”, published in 1850. Followers of this line of reasoning usually also subscribe to the view that he and his illustrators were inspired by paintings of pages2, black servants of noble families in Europe. Not only the “invention” of Black Pete but also many other rituals of the Saint Nicolas celebrations, like the entry tour of the Saint and his Spanish homeland, are attributed to Schenkman, portraying him and his book as the founders of the current tradition. By blindly postulating such a recent and one-dimensional lineage for the Saint’s servant, without any critical discussion on the validity of the underlying assumptions and the historical facts, the mythical figure of Black Pete and his many incarnations in European folklore are frequently misinterpreted as racist. Many new sources have surfaced over the last years that shed a completely different light on the origins of Black Pete and other elements of the tradition. According to extensive research neither the arrival procession of Saint Nicolas nor his companion Black Pete started with Schenkman. Similarly, Spain was mentioned as the homeland for Saint-Nicolas well before the publication of 1850. In the next paragraphs we will discuss the most important historical sources on this topic. In a painting from Leiden born painter Matthijs Naiveu (1647 - 1726) from 1703, “Feestelijkheden van Sint Nicolaas” we already witness a procession celebrating the arrival of Saint-Nicolas.

  • A CHRISTMAS STORY Synopsis
A CHRISTMAS STORY Synopsis Act One The Prologue begins on Christmas Eve “many years ago’ with a middle aged Jean Sheperd walking to the WOR station in NYC to deliver his nationally beloved radio show. He starts to tell us the story of Ralphie Parker, a fictionalized version of his childhood self. The curtain rises on the Parker family home, nestled in the unremarkable town of Hohman, Indiana in 1940, as they try to get out the door for the event of the season: the unveiling of the Higbee’s Department Store holiday window display. Ralphie excitedly announces to us the thing he most longs for: The Official Red Ryder Range Model Carbine Action BB Gun. As he sings, we meet the rest of the Parker family. Mother bustles about, getting everyone suited up and ready to go. The Old Man comes in from the cold, chased by his arch nemeses, the Bumpus Hounds, a pair of bloodhounds who plague him every time he enters and exits the house. Seven-year-old Randy, the baby of the family, endearingly resists going out into the cold Indiana air. Finally, the family members are on their way and arrive at Higbee’s, where it seems all of Hohman has congregated to gaze in awe at the holiday window display (“It All Comes Down To Christmas”). It’s then that Ralphie sees the Red Ryder BB Gun right before his eyes and rapturously fantasizes about how much better his life would be if only he could get that for Christmas (“Red Ryder Carbine-Action BB Gun”).

  • Laughter and Libations, 2019
Laughter and Libations: A Pagan-Safe Songbook K. S. Wright 2019 Created for use by Khalielawright.com Laugh’ter (laf ter) n. mere diversion of pleasure. Li-ba-tion (lī bā’shen) n. the ritual pouring out of wine to honor a god. By 1879 caroling was defined as “going around from place to place singing Christmas songs” and was thought to be a revival of an old English custom. This is not the case. In reality, caroling traces its origin back to the Old French carole, “a kind round dance accompanied by singers,” (c. 1300.) Those who did the singing and dancing, carolers, owe their moniker to the root word carl (n.) “bondsman; a common man of low birth,” from the Old Norse karl, meaning “man.” When the housecarls went carousing, bawdy drinking songs ensued. It is not hard to imaging the lords and ladies of the manner eagerly offering them a cup of whatever was on hand just to get them to take their signing and dancing elsewhere. The aim of Laughter and Libations is to trace common carols back to their less than pious roots, revving their original intent, which was to celebrate feasting and fornicating, drinking and dancing. This guide is divided into three sections: 1) Traditional Treasures, which provides history and original lyrics of the carols, 2) Simple Substitutions, showing how to change a Christmas carol into one celebrating Yule, Saturnalia, or what-have-you, and 3) Ridiculous Rewrites, which contains Christmas hymns for which there are no other existing lyrics, rewritten in a Pagan-Safe form.
