  • Willis Conover, the Voice of America, and the International Reception of Avant-Garde Jazz in the 1960S
“SOUNDS FOR ADVENTUROUS LISTENERS”: WILLIS CONOVER, THE VOICE OF AMERICA, AND THE INTERNATIONAL RECEPTION OF AVANT-GARDE JAZZ IN THE 1960S Mark A. Breckenridge, B.M., M.M., M.M.E. Dissertation Prepared for the Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS August 2012 APPROVED: John P. Murphy, Major Professor and Interim Director of Graduate Studies in Music Eileen M. Hayes, Minor Professor and Chair of the Division of Music History, Theory, and Ethnomusicology Mark McKnight, Committee Member Ana Alonso-Minutti, Committee Member James C. Scott, Dean of the College of Music Mark Wardell, Dean of the Toulouse Graduate School Breckenridge, Mark A., “Sounds for Adventurous Listeners”: Willis Conover, the Voice of America, and the International Reception of Avant-garde Jazz in the 1960s. Doctor of Philosophy (Musicology), August 2012, 315 pp., 27 figures, bibliography, 189 titles. In “Sounds for Adventurous Listeners,” I argue that Conover’s role in the dissemination of jazz through the Music USA Jazz Hour was more influential on an educational level than what literature on Conover currently provides. Chapter 2 begins with an examination of current studies regarding the role of jazz in Cold War diplomacy, the sociopolitical implications of avant-garde jazz and race, the convergence of fandom and propaganda, the promoter as facilitator of musical trends, and the influence of international radio during the Cold War. In chapter 3 I introduce the Friends of Music USA Newsletter and explain its function as a record of overseas jazz reception and a document that cohered a global network of fans. I then focus on avant-garde debates of the 1960s and discuss Conover’s role overseas and in the United States.

Part One of Mal Waldron Interview Conducted by ©Stuart Nicholson on 26th February 1994 We begin informal small talk as I set up tape… MW: ….when I started playing at the Five Spot Q: Who was that with? MW: I did that with Steve Lacy, we did duets, we played for poetry and jazz Q: When did you start moving into Charles Mingus’ orbit? MW: 1954. 1954, at the Jazz Composers Workshop, everything came about through the snowball effect, you know? For example, you play with one guy and he adds the people he plays with and you play with those guys, and other guys have other guys who you play with and it’s like a snowball, getting bigger and bigger and bigger through word of mouth and through association, that’s the way we extend ourselves Q: And it was three years with Mingus? MW: Let’s see. 1954 to about 1957, so three years yes. Q: And did that have any influence on your musical direction? MW: Oh, definitely. Everything I did at that time, my direction, I was learning. Every day I learned something and it changed me and it affected me, every day I had a new musical experience Q: What are your recollections of working with Charles Mingus? MW: He got me to approach the piano in a good way because he told me not to worry about changes, but worry about sounds, clusters, use clusters on the piano — elbows and stuff like that! But the sound was more important than the actual change.

1 The TENORSAX of JOHN WILLIAM COLTRANE Solographer: Jan Evensmo assisted by James Accardi Last update: Feb. 29, 2016 2 Born: Hamlet, North Carolina, Sept. 23, 1926 Died: NYC. July 17, 1967 Introduction: There was much discussion back then on the issue of John Coltrane and what he represented in modern jazz. Personnally I was very fascinated by his recordings in the last years of the fifties but had problems with what happened in the sixties. I still have, but Coltrane certainly proved his immortality. Early history: Played althorn, clarinet and saxophone in highschool, became professional musician in 1945. After moving to Philadelphia he enrolled at the Ornstein School of Music and the Granoff Studios; service in a navy band in Hawaii (1945-46) interrupted these studies. Played alto saxophone in the bands led by Joe Webb and King Kolax, then changed to tenorsax to work with Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson (1947-48) (no recordings). He performed on either instrument as circumstances demanded while in groups led by Jimmy Heath, Howard McGhee, Dizzy Gillespie, Earl Bostic and lesser-known rhythm-and-blues musicians, but by the time of his membership in Johnny Hodges’s septet (1953-54) he was firmly committed to the tenor instrument. He performed infrequently for about a year, then leaped to fame in Miles Davis’s quintet with Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones (1955-57). Throughout the 1950s addiction to drugs and then alcoholism disrupted his career. Shortly after leaving Davis, however, he overcame these problems (his album ‘A Love Supreme’ celebrated this victory and the profound religious experiences associated with it).
