About Institution Henry Baker College Melukavu, is a Christian Minority Educational Institution established, owned and administered by C.S.I East Kerala Diocese, registered as Henry Baker College Educational Society (Reg.No.K. 1056/99 dated. 22-09-1999). The college is named after Rev. Henry Baker Jr., the pioneering CMS missionary popularly known as Apostle of Hills. Henry Baker College, Melukavu, (Melukavumattom P.O, district, Kerala State, ) was founded in 1981 by the C.S.I. Madhya Kerala Diocese providing two year Pre-Degree course of Kerala University; upgraded in1991 and became a first grade college in1999 and later on permanently affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University. The college is now included under 2(F) & 12 (B) of the UGC Act. Henry Baker College, Melukavu, is the only college in Kerala formed for the upliftment of pupils in hilly areas pursuing higher education. Vision To be a centre of higher education imparting qualitatively high, socially relevant and holistic education to all without discriminating anyone on the ground of caste, religion or gender.

The motto of our college is “FROM DARKNESS INTO MARVELLOUS LIGHT”. The college aims at imparting education so that people may be liberated from the darkness of ignorance to the dawn of knowledge.

1. To motivate young men and women of all caste, creed and religion to avail the best higher education opportunity leading to research, social welfare and nation building. 2. To provide ample educational opportunities to the students belonging to minority and marginalized communities, and to infuse a spirit of urge for knowledge and social commitment. 3. To cultivate a sense of discipline, human values and moral uprightness in the younger generation. 4. To make the young ones conscious of socio-economic realities, face them boldly and respond meaningfully and effectively to effect a lasting impact in our social fabric. 5. Activities 2017-18

1. Academic Year Opening (1st June 2017)

As per the Mahatma Gandhi University Academic Calendar, College re-opened after the summer vacation and regulars classes commenced on 1st June 2017 with the opening prayer of Rev. P.K Sebastian, Bursar of Henry Baker College, Melukavu 2. Association Inauguration (16th June 2017)

Commerce Association is a platform creating a multitude of opportunities to commerce students for their overall development. The association organized a huge number of vibrant programmes during the Academic Year 2017-2018. The official inauguration of Commerce Association Activities 2017-18 on 16th June 2018 by Dr. Stephen Mathew, HOD of Commerce , St. Stephen’s College, Uzhavoor, Dr. Antony Joseph, Head of the department of Commerce, Presided over the meeting. 3. Winners Day Celebrations (27th July 2017)

Department of Commerce secured a remarkable First Rank in Mahatma Gandhi University B.Com. Degree Examinations, March 2017. The Department organized a special programme “Winners Day Celebrations -2017” on 27th July 2017 for congratulating the winners.The function inaugurated by Smt. E.S. Bijimol MLA ,Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. K G Daniel, Manager of the College, Presided over the meeting. IAS winner Sri. Arjun Pandian deliver the Key note address in the programme.

4. Exploring Entrepreneurial Skills - Two Day Workshop for Higher Secondary Students ( 26th & 27th October 2017)

Department of Commerce organized a Two Day Enrichment Work Shop for Higher Secondary Students on 26th& 27th October 2017). 94 students from different higher secondary schools of Kottayam and Idukki districts are participated the programme. 5. One Day Seminar on Human Rights and Intellectual Property Rights ( 27 October 2017 )

The Department of Commerce organized a one day Workshop on Intellectual Property Rights” on 27 October 2017. The Resource Person of the programme was Adv. Frinso Mathew, Govt. of India Notary. The programme was welcomed by Dr. Santo Jose, Secretary, Department of Commerce, presided by Dr. Antony Joseph, Head of the Department of Commerce and inaugurated by Dr. Gireesh Kumar G.S, Principal. The Seminar was arranged in the College Auditorium at 10 am and came to an end by 3.30 pm with the vote of thanks by Prof. Jenipher Carlos Hosanna. The main objectives on IPR Session were: 1. To create awareness in students about the benefits of intellectual property 2. The need for the creation and growth of intellectual property by undertaking relevant measures 3. Need for having strong and effective laws with regard to IP rights, consistent with international obligations. 4. How to catalyse commercialization of IP rights. 5. To strengthen the enforcement and adjudicatory mechanisms for combating IP violations and to promote awareness and respect for IP rights. 6. How the capacity development with respect to IPR is possible? –(Let our students understand that it is possible by strengthening and expanding human resources, institutions for training, research and skill building in IP)

As far as human rights session is concerned, our major objective was let the HBC’s young minds understand equality and know their rights, let them also understand how they should be treated, and how they should treat others. It was our ultimate objective that if we could provide this kind of topics through a seminar, it will create a safe place for students to explore, discuss, challenge and form their own opinions and values. There were 110 participants in the programme

6. Industrial Visits a. B.Com. Model I Co-operation(14th December 2017)

31 students of our Second Year B.Com. Model I Co-operation accompanied by Prof. Justin Jose and Prof. Ashly Mereena Mathew are visited to KITEX Limited, Lulu Shopping Mall, Kochi Metro and Cochin Shipyard on 14th December 2017.

7. Study Tours a. Final Year B.Com. Co-operation

30 Student of our Final Year B.Com. Model I Co-operation accompanied by Dr. Santo Jose and Smt. Elizabeth Mathew are visited Wayanad and Ootty from 3rd – 7th December 2017.

12 Students of our Final Year M.Com. accompanied by Prof. Shinu Thomas P., Prof. Ashly Mereena Mathew and Ms. Lenittamol Abraham are visited Ramakkalmedu and Cumbum on 8th February 2018.

8. Co-operative Day Celebrations - 2018 The Department of Commerce organized a grant Co-operative Day Celebration on 15th January 2018 at HRDT Centre Melukavumattom. Sri. Kadakampally Surendren , Hon. Minister of Co-operation was Inaugurated the Programme and Sri. K.M. Mani MLA, Former Minister of Finance Presided over the Meeting. In the Programme, Minister honoured the 25 Senior Co-operatives of the Meenachil Taluk. The Celebrations started on the campus with Co-operative flag hoisting and Co-operation Rally. In Melukavumattom town, a flash mob performed by the students for showing the importance of co-operation. The main aim of this celebration was to increase awareness of cooperatives and highlight the contributions of the cooperative movement to resolving the major problems addressed by the region. It was also a gathering programme of our former students who are working in co-operative sector. The programme started at 9.00 am and ended at 2.30 Pm.

9. Peer Teaching

As a part of Zero Free hour Policy of the College, the department introduced the system in commerce classes. Students and their parents suggested that Peer Teachingis a highly useful and effective system.Fast learners and academically excellent students from the same class are taking classes whenever the free hours occur. Department provide proper training to such students. 10. Cross aged Teaching

This is scheme introduced by the commerce department to postgraduate students having teaching aspirations. Such selected students taking classes in UG classes based on the topic allotted by the teacher concerned. Department provide proper training to such students. 11. Food for Thought

This is a special end effective bench marking programme arranged by the department for Fast Learners.Inspiring books of legends issued by the department to Fast Learners and conducting discussions every week in their allotted books. 12. Onam Celebrations

Onam is the main festival of Kerala ,which promotes our culture, unity and communal harmony. Onam 2017 was a remarkable one. Students, Teachers and other staff members enjoyed a lot with Onappayasam, Vadam Vali, Kerala Kesari, Malayali Manka, Athappookkalam etc.Our students arranged onasadhya to all students and teachers of the department. 13. X’Mas Celebrations

HBC X’Mas Celebration is an outstanding prrogramme with Carol Service, X`Mas Crib Competition, Pappa Competition andX’Mas Song Competition. 14. Knowledge Album

Postgraduate Department of History 1. History Association Inauguration History Association Inauguration of the academic year 2017-18 was conducted on 24th July 2017. Meeting was presided over by Prof. Liza George, Principal -in -Charge. Dr. Beena Paul Head of the Department of History welcomed the gathering. Dr. Joseph Augustine MA, LLM, Ph.D (Rtd. HoD, Newman College, ) inaugurated the meeting and talked on ‘Kerala Coinage and Medieval Economy’. Prof. Korah Jacob, Staff Secretary of the college felicitated in the meeting. Arabhi Raju, Association Secretary, proposed vote of thanks. Eighty students attended the programme.

2. Commemoration of Quit India Day and Hiroshima Nagasaki Day Postgraduate department of History commemorated 75th Quit India Day and 70th Hiroshima Nagazaki day on 9th October 2017. On the occasion staff and students of the department of history conducted a Peace Rally in the campus with lighted candles. The rally ended in front of the Principal’s office, with the message of Dr. Beena Paul, HoD Postgraduate Department of History. Students made a board with Sadako paper cranes and the banyan tree of the campus was decorated with Sadako cranes. The programme ended at 2.00pm. All the staff and students of the department participated in the programme.

3. Inauguration of Reading Club

Reading Club inauguration of the academic year 2017-18 was held on 13th October 2017, at 1.10 pm. Association Secretary Arabhi Raju, welcomed the gathering. The meeting was presided over by Dr. Beena Paul, Head of the Department of History. Dr. Giresh Kumar.G.S , Principal of the college inaugurated the reading club and delivered the Keynote address. Smt. Elizebath Joseph, Assi. Prof., Department of English delivered a special talk on Cyber writing and Creativity. The talk gave information about the possibilities of creative writing in the changing world scenario. Aravind Shaji, I BA History, proposed vote of thanks. The meeting ended at 2.00pm. Forty students participated in the meeting.

4. Reading Club- Book Review Meetings. 1. First book –review meeting of this academic year was held on 8th December 2017 at 3.30 pm. Kum. Ancy K.B., I MA History reviewed the work Aammaratheyum Marannu Marannu Njan by K.R. Meera. Fifty students’s attended the meeting. 2. Second book review presentation was held on 18th December 2017 at 3.30pm. Review was made by Kum.Asha Venu, IMA on M.T.Vasudevan Nair’s Nalukettu. Fifty three students attended the meeting. 3. Kum. Asiya Nizar presented the book review of Thendivargham by Thakazhi Sivasankarapilla. The meeting was held at 3.30 on 28th August 2018.Thirty nine students attended the programme.

4. The fourth meeting was held on 1st February 2018 at 3.30 pm. Kum. Mary Angel, I MA presented the review on Aham- Vihanga by Dr. Thomas Abraham. The book is a translation of Jonathan Livingstone Seagull by Richard Bagh. Fifteen students attended the Meeting. 5. The fifth book review meeting was held on 23rd March 2018 at 3.30 pm. Kum. Chinju George, IMA presented the review on Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. Seventeen students attended the Meeting.

5. Orientation for MA students One day orientation programme for IMA students were arranged in the Seminar hall on 1st November 2017. Forenoon session was common for MA and M.Com students. In the afternoon session students were given an introduction to the programme and syllabus. Dr. Gireeshkumar G.S, Principal of the college, welcomed the students to the College. Dr. Antony Kallampally, HOD Commerce Department and Dr. Beena Paul, HOD History Department led the session.

6. Study Tour - MA History Students

MA students of the department conducted a study tour to North Kerala on 26th & 27th October 2017 with an intention to learn from the source. A team consisting of 2 staff and 9 students visited historical sites like Beppur, Kappad, Chirangal, Lokanarkavu Temple Vadakara, Handicrafts Village, Mahi, Thalasseri Fort, Kannur Fort, Parassinikadu Temple and Bakel Fort. Major historical sites in North Kerala were visited by them. It was really a wonderful experience to them.

6. Regional Seminar - Last Sixty Years of Kerala: History and Culture

Department organised a one day regional seminar on Last Sixty Years of Kerala: History and Culture on 20th November 2017. The purpose was to have an overview of Kerala History and culture over the last sixty years. Rt. Rev.Dr. K.G. Daniel presided over the meeting. Dr. K. K. N. Kurup, former Vice-Chancellor, University of Calicut inaugurated the seminar and talked on “Impact of Land Reforms on Kerala Society”. In the afternoon session, Dr. K. S. Pradeepkumar, Deputy Director (Training) KIRTADS, Kozhikode talked on Trajectories of tribal development and Prof. T. M. Yesudasan, Asso. Prof. (Rtd.) CMS College Kottayam talked on Sixty Years of Life on the Margins respectively. There were altogether119 participants.

7. Study Tour BA Final Year History Students 2 staff and 21 students of the department conducted study tour to Wayanad and Ootty from 14th to 17th November 2017. Historical places like Edackal caves, Jain temples and Pazhassi memorial were visited.

8. Exhibition on Industrial Revolution In order to understand the various facets of industrial revolution, a poster exhibition was organized by the department of history on 12th January 2018. All the innovations that led to the revolution and its description were exhibited. On the same day, a movie by Charlie Chaplain titled Modern Times was also shown to the students. The initiative for the exhibition was taken by the final year BA students.

8. Annual Alumni Meeting

The Sixth Alumni meeting of the department was held on Januaury 26, 2018 at 10.30 am. The meeting was presided over by Alumni Association President, Adv.V.P. Nazer and Dr. Gireesh Kumar G.S, Principal of the college addressed the gathering. Dr. Beeena Paul, HOD History, Dr. Nisha Joseph, Asst. Professor and Shri. Krishnadas Chinnppan, were present in the meeting.

9. Workshop on Oral History Archiving On 3rd February 2017, department organised a Workshop on Oral History Archiving. The purpose of the seminar was to equip the students of the department to record and preserve the oral memories of the people in and around Melukavu and also memories they could acquaint personally. With this department of History started Henry Baker College Oral History Archives (HBCOHA). Dr. Sebastian Joseph, HOD, Dept. of History, U.C. College, Aluva and Smt. Manjusha K.A, Asst. Prof. School of Gandhian Thought & Development Studies, M. G. University, were the resource persons of the workshop. Twenty Eight students participated in the workshop.

10. Release of Historica Vol. VII. Seventh Volume of Historica, a manuscript Magazine by the students of the department was released on 26th March 2018. Volume titled FENESTRA is an eye- opener to the various social issues in India. Articles to the vol. are contributed by the students of the Department. The volume was released by Dr. Gireeshkumar G.S. Principal and it was handed over to Kum. Ancy K.B. I MA and Johny Guruswammy I BA, the winners of Ente Malayam Competition. 45 students participated in the programme.

11. Visit to Valpara Tribal Settlement Annual visit of the tribal settlement was conducted on 21st April 2018. 2 Staff and 12 students of the Department visited, Valpara, an Urali Settlement in Idukki district. The intention of the visit was to have a better understanding of the Urali tribal culture and life and their developmental issues. Students visited many Kudis and conducted interviews.

12. Extension Lecture. Fourth extension lecture of the department was held on 14th May 2018. Dr. Bibin Kuriakose, Asst. Professor, Marthoma College for Women, Perumbavoor delivered the lecture on Evangelical Ethnography and the question of Religion in Kerala. Dr. Gireesh Kumar .G.S, Principal of the college presided over the meeting. Thirty Six students and five teachers participated in the meeting.

NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME

1. WORLD ENVIRONMENTAL DAY 2017

The World Environmental Day celebration of the college was held in association with Melukavu Grama Panchayath on 5th June 2017. More than 50 volunteers participated in the programme. After the official meeting saplings were planted in and around the college

2. INDEPENDENCE DAY The Central Government has decided to observe a SWACHHTA PAKHWADA from 1st August 2017 to 15th August 2017. Hon’ble Prime Minister Shree. Narendra Modi urged the people of India to keep their surroundings clean during his first address to the nation on the eve of Independence Day. NSS has been conducting various activities under the cleanliness drive in the past, took this order and started various programmes related to cleaning surroundings/ SwachhtaPakhwada. Henry Baker College NSS unit also observed the Independence Day and SwachhtaPakhwada Day and Programme Officer Dr. Nisha Joseph hoisted the flag and give a message on Integrity of the Nation. After the meeting, NSS volunteers cleaned college and neighbouring Pala -Melukavu road and observed the day meaningfully.

3. THREE DAY ORIENTATION CAMP As part of our regular NSS activities, the college organized a three-day orientation programme for new NSS volunteers. The camp was held from 18th August 2017 to 20th August 2017. 42 NSS volunteers had participated in this programme. The classes were taken by expertise from various fields. And the major concern of the camp was organic farming. The camp ended on 20th August 2017.

4. SEVEN DAY CAMP-JAIVAM 2017

The seven-day camp was started on 31st August to 6th September 2017. Nearly 71 students had participated. It has been declared Kottayam District as a SampoornaJaivaSaksharathaJilla and the purpose of the camp was to create massive organic awareness among people. The Camp was formally inaugurated by Prof. Liza George, Principal in Charge of the college. Melukavu Grama Panchayath Ward number VII, VIII, IX, X, XI, XII, & XIII was surveyed by HBC NSS volunteers. The camp was visited by MG University Syndicate member, Jaivakarshaka Samithi Committee members and Ward members in all the seven days of camp.

5. SWACHHTHA HI SEVA On September 15, 2017, the President of India launched a nationwide sanitation campaign “Swachhta Hi Seva” at Iswarganj village in Kanpur. The President administered the Swachhta Hi Seva Pledge whereby the Nation resolved to create a clean healthy and new India. Swachhatha Hi Seva was another cleaning drive of SuchhithwaPakhwada programme of Prime Minister. NSS units observed Swachatha Hi Seva from 15th September to 2nd October 2017. On October 2ndas part of the Gandhi Jayanthi -2017, Swachhtha Hi Seva cleaning drive programme was organised by National Service Scheme of Henry Baker College, Melukavu to clean the Adopted Village and College Premises. Students, teachers and non-teaching staff had participated in the programme.

6. “GRAMAVEEDHIYIL” (22nd to 27thDecember 2017) The NSS unit of both Henry Baker College, Melukavu and RTI Pampady had conducted a special regional camp. Students from our college and students from RTI Pampady did various works like cleaning of Public Health Centre, Edamaruk and repaired house wiring and so on. Volunteers helped one family at Melukavu to complete their house construction. It was a glorious moment for Henry Baker College, Melukavu and NSS Unit.

7. JAIVAM Intercollegiate Camp

JAIVAM Intercollegiate Camp was held at ThalanadGramapachayath from 25th- 28th January 2018. This camp was a continuation of organic literacy camp (Jaivam 2017) held during September 2017 and it was attended by 34 NSS volunteers from various colleges in which they completed awareness survey of 1785 houses at Thalanad.

8. CANCER AWARENESS PROGRAMME

A Cancer Awareness Programme was organized by the National Service Scheme of Henry Baker College in association with Community Health Centre, Edamaruku on 18th March 2018. College Principal Dr. Gireesh Kumar G.S had inaugurated the programme. Dr. Radhika Vijayan, Medical Officer, Community Health Centre, Edamaruku and Sri Sakker K.B, Health Inspector CHC, lead the sessions.

9. COTPA AWARENESS RALLY

The Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003 or COTPA, 2003(Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) is an Act of government of India enacted in 2003 to prohibit the advertisement of, and to provide for the regulation of trade and commerce in, and production, supply and distribution of cigarettes and other tobacco products in India. National Service Scheme, HBC also observed 31st May 2018 as Anti-Tobacco Day under COTPA 2003. 200 NSS volunteers and 7 teachers participated in the rally. It was a joint endeavour of CHC, Edamaruk, MelukavuGramapanchayath and NSS HBC. Kudos to the members who actively participated in this rally and made the campaign successful.
