Initiatives for Inclusive Environment: Integrating the Campus and

Society

The cultural programmes conducted by various bodies and the activities of the NSS and departments help to create a feeling of oneness and solidarity. Such programmes promote and nurture an atmosphere of inclusiveness in the minds of all who are part of the campus community. The following instances would give an idea about the sincere efforts of the institution to integrate the campus community and bring in the feeling of oneness:

Organic Farming -Jaiva Nanma Inauguration 23-8-2016

The positive result of the organic farming done during the previous year inspired the NSS volunteers to continue this practice on a larger scale. For this ‘Jaivananma’, a programme that included practical organic farming along with the spreading of the message of positive aspects of organic farming was devised. The programme was formally inaugurated along with the active participation of the people of the locality on 23 August 2016.

Organ Donation Awareness Public Campaign

The Department of Commerce organized an Organ Donation Awareness Campaign at

Melukavumattom town on 23rd August 2016. CSI East Kerala Diocese Treasurer, Rev. V.S.

Francis inaugurated the programme. An organ Donor Rev. Fr. Sebastian Kidangathazhe delivered the keynote address. Dr. Tharsis Joseph (CMD Deepika), Rev.Justin Mony (Clergy

Proclamation Rally for Public Awareness of Organ Donation

The Department of Commerce organized a proclamation rally for giving awareness to public about Organ Donation and against social evils. All students and staff members actively participated in the proclamation rally.

COTPA AWARENESS RALLY

The Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003 or COTPA, 2003 is an Act of government of enacted in 2003 to prohibit advertisement of, and to provide for the regulation of trade and commerce in, and production, supply and distribution of cigarettes and other tobacco products in India. National Service Scheme, HBC also observed 31st May 2018 as anti-tobacco day under COTPA 2003. 200 NSS volunteers and 7 teachers participated in the rally. It was a joint endeavour of CHC, Edamaruk, Melukavu Gramapanchayath and NSS HBC and it was a very successful programme.

FLOOD RELIEF ACTIVITIES

From August 19th 2018 onwards, the NSS volunteers of the college and Krishibhavan,

Thodupuzha jointly started collection and distribution vegetables and other food materials for

flood affected areas of . It was a great relief to the people staying in the flood rehabilitation camps.

On 23rd August 2018 our NSS Unit organized “Shoonyathayilekk Orukaisahaym” [A

Helping Hand in the Void] the second stage of flood relief activities, exclusively for selected houses at Panniyarkutty, Idukki district. For this opened a collection centre at Melukavumattom.

All generous persons from Melukavu contributed enormously to this programme. Through this collection centre we collected many household items like kitchen wear, dress materials, food items, provisions and study materials for school-college students. This was solely done by the support of NSS volunteers, who always remained in the centre for collecting goods. The collected materials were distributed to the Kudumbasree hotel at Melukavumattom on 5th September 2018 and to people at Panniyarkutty on 9th September 2018.

Cleaning Mission in Flood Affected Areas: Cleaning the houses of flood affected villages was our second flood related programme. Our students and teachers actively participated in this programme. We also provided food for the Melukavu Gramapanchayat members and other volunteers who were involved in the village cleaning programme in Vaikkom taluk.

CYCLOTHON – ANTI DRUG AWARENESS CYCLING

An Anti-drug Awareness Cycling Programme was conducted by the Department of Tourism on

18th October 2019 from Melukavu to Kodanad. This cycling was flagged off by the Sub

Inspector of Police, Melukavu. The members of the Cycling team visited MKNM HSS,

Kumaramangalam, Iype Memorial HS, Kaloor, and St. Joseph’s HSS, Paingottoor, and conveyed the message against using narcotics and distributed leaflets to motivate the students to become volunteers of anti-drug campaign.

PALLIATIVE CARE KUDUMBA SANGAMAM

The NSS Unit of Henry Baker College associated with the Palliative Care Kudumba

Sangamam organized by the Community health Center, Edamaruk and Melukavu Grama

Panchayath. Invited NSS volunteers from Henry Baker College took effort to cheer and entertain patients and their caretakers. Nineteen NSS volunteers actively participated in this programme.

BLOOD DONATION CAMP

NSS Unit, Henry Baker College, and IMA blood bank , jointly organized a blood donation camp on 12 February 2019. Forty-six NSS volunteers and a few teachers generously donated their blood.

NSS BLOOD DONATION CAMP

The NSS unit of Henry baker College Melukavu, Organized a Blood Donation Camp in collaboration with Lions Club of Pala Spice Valley, on 2nd November 2019. The Camp was inaugurated by Sri. Mani C. Kappen MLA and Presidential Address was given by Rt. Rev. V.S

Francis, manager of the college and Bishop East Kerala Diocese. MJF Ln. Mr Babu

Vadakkemuri expressed his gratitude to the NSS unit of the college for its continuous endeavor in this regard. MJF Lion KJ Thomas IPS (Rtd.), Lion. Prof. Renjith Sebastian delivered words of

felicitation and Lion. Remy Babu proposed the vote of thanks. 40 volunteers came forward to donate blood during the camp which included students and members of the teaching & non- teaching staff. At the end 40 units of Blood could be collected in the camp. The blood donors were provided with a blood donation certificate card by SH Blood Bank, Kottayam.

Distribution of Sanitizer Viols

As WHO declared Covid-19 as a pandemic, Kerala State Govt. took important measures to stop corona virus spread. In order to meet the increasing demand of hand sanitizers locally, the teachers and students of Department of Physics, Henry Baker College, came forward to produce alcohol-based hand sanitizer to be distributed among the general public. As a social responsibility activity, we handed over 100 bottles (100 ml each) of sanitizers to Dr. Sarala,

Medical Officer, Community Health Centre, Edamaruku, , free of cost on

17/03/2020. We also supplied hand sanitizers to State Bank of India, Melukavumattom and

Melukavu Service Cooperative Bank, Melukavumattom.

Niteo 2015: Two-Day Work Shop for Higher Secondary Students

As a part of Silver Jubilee Year Special Programmes, the Department of Commerce organized a Two-Day Work Shop for Higher Secondary Students on 18th and 19th August 2015.

92 students from different higher secondary schools of Kottayam and Idukki districts participated the programme. This programme was inaugurated by Bishop Most. Rev. Dr. K. J. Samuel,

Former moderator of CSI. He also took the first session “Spirituality in Education” in this workshop. Dr. Tharsis Joseph (NAAC Peer Team Member), Dr. Josemon George (Associate

Professor, Medical College, Kottayam) and the faculty of the department led the various sessions.

The department of Physics organized SPEED 2K17, Science exhibition: The Department of

Physics organized SPEED 2K17, a two-day science fest for the public, nearby schools and colleges on 20th and 2st January 2017 as part of National Science day celebrations. The UG students of this Department designed and exhibited experiments in various branches of physics including Electronics, Optics, Electromagnetics, Mechanics, Electricity etc. In addition to this there were exhibitions on bio-specimens, stamps and coins, as well as games and puzzles. This event helped to explore the scientific temper and creativity of students.

Space Walk: ISRO Exhibition

An exhibition of satellites and rocket models by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) highlighting their achievements was conducted under the auspices of the Department of Physics.

It created public awareness on the activities and social benefits of India’s space programmes and also provided a great opportunity to see various launch vehicles and to explore how the satellites and rockets function.

Inter-school quiz competition

As part of knowledge sharing programme an interschool quiz competition was conducted among students of four nearby schools in July 2016. A preliminary written round was conducted by our 3rd year students at respective schools on 8th July and the toppers (a team of two students) from each school participated in the final round. The final round was conducted at the college auditorium on 16th July 2016 at 10 am. Teams from the following schools qualified for the final round:

(i) St. Sebastian’s H S S, Kadanad

(ii) M.D.C.M.S High School, Chalamattom

(iii) C. M. S. High School, Melukavu

(iv) Presentation Public School, Melukavu

Rosemary S. and Merin Pious from St. Sebastian’s H S S, Kadanad won the First prize. Akhil

Sivadasan and Praveen Prasad of M.D.C.M.S High School, Chalamattom bagged the second prize. 55 students participated in this programme.

Explore 2017: Two-Day Enrichment Programme for Higher Secondary Students

The Department of Commerce organized a Two-Day Work Shop for Higher Secondary

Students on 26th & 27th October 2017. 92 students from different higher secondary schools of

Kottayam and Idukki districts are participated the programme. Sri. Abin M. Abraham, General

Manager, East Urban Co-operative Bank Ltd., inaugurated the programme.

Rev. Dr. P.T. George (Treasurer, CSI East Kerala Diocese) inaugurated the Valedictory Session and Adv. Frinso Mathew, Government of India Notary, delivered the keynote address.

Demonstration of Physics Experiments to Higher Secondary Students

As part of our knowledge sharing programme students of the Department of Physics demonstrated physics experiments which are not familiar to higher secondary school students in the afternoon session.

An Intercollegiate Power Point Presentation competition was held on 19 September based on the focal theme “Keep cool and carry on! The Montreal Protocol.” 13 teams from nearby colleges participated in the event. Mr. Akhil G and Retired Professors, Prof. Annie George and Prof. Liza

George served as judges for the competition. The winners were

Intercollegiate Science Quiz Competition.

The Department of Physics conducted an Intercollegiate Science Quiz Competition on 25

September 2019. The preliminary round was a written test comprising of 30 questions based on

Environmental Science and Basic Science. Twenty-one teams from nearby colleges participated in the event. After the preliminary round five teams were selected for the final round. Dr. Jobin

Job Mathen, Department of Physics, St. Thomas College, Pala was the Quiz master. The winners were:

First Prize- Rs. 2000/-: Mr. Vinayak Sanil & Abin Thomas Department of Physics, St. Stephen’s

College, Uzhavoor.

Second Prize-Rs. 1500/-: Ms. Shelcy Shaji & Akhila D Department of Physics Alphonsa

College, Pala.

Third Prize-Rs. 1000/-: Mr. Anand Manusankar & Manikandan S. Department of Physics, St.

Thomas College, Pala.
