Teachers are working together to facilitate growth in student independence, self-reliance, and the ability to take on increasing levels of responsibility as students move up from 5th through 8th grade.

Expectations are raised as students progress through the middle school grades.

Grades are a snapshot of student knowledge. We use Option C as a communication tool for grades and conduct.

We try to embed an egalitarian concept (all humans are equal in fundamental worth) into daily life so there is less time devoted to managing discipline.

A Growth Mindset At CKS, we provide academic rigor so it is important to reinforce a growth mindset with students during the learning process. We want students to enjoy learning and develop resilience.

What is Accelerated Reader?

- Computer based program which helps guide kids toward books that align with their individual reading levels determined through STAR reading assessments; AR is required for grades 5-8 and included in literature grade monthly for 5th grade and quarterly for 6th-8th grade

How can you help?

Communication is expected to begin between the student and the teacher and continue with the parents.

Encourage your middle school students to advocate for themselves with their teachers. Parent intervention will be back up support.

Teachers will share communication with each other about student issues that affect all classes such as illness or injuries.

Homework will be assigned nightly (excluding Fridays and weekends). Quality Work Guidelines Quality work is expected for all assignments Encourage your child to “redo” Friday folder Students can type formal assignments unless stated otherwise by teacher Formal handwriting is still taught in grades 5-6. Cursive writing in ink is required for formal assignments Complete headings on papers are expected: name, number subject, date Goal: Preparation for lifelong learners and the next level of education

The expectation is that these are going to take multiple weeks to complete. The students will spend time working on these in class and outside of class.

● The Acceptable Use of Technology form is included in the student handbook. More details will be discussed during computer class. ● Students will use a variety of devices at school- tablets, Chromebooks, and PC’s in the computer lab. ● All middle school students need access to a device for home use. We do not specify the type of device because students may need to purchase a specific one for high school use. ● Students will learn skills in Computer class that will aid them in completing projects for other subject areas. Uniform Information Uniform All uniforms should be Educational Outfitters, unless wearing the Parker old uniform for one more year

When uniforms are outgrown, too tight, too worn, or hems are too short, please replace with new Educational Outfitters uniforms

Shoe policy - rubber-soled , mary janes, saddle oxfords, Sperry’s authentic two-eye original boat , or Merrell jungle mocs in solids or combinations of black, white, gray, brown or tan. Red accent allowed on 25% of sneaker as are accents in any of the listed shoe colors.

Sock policy - black or white solid crew , bobby sock, or knee hi sock, must cover the ankle bone, small logo in black or white allowed
