Round 6 - 14 May 2016 38 Round 6 - 14 May 2016 3 www.bdafl.com.au www.bdafl.com.au NO PLACE LIKE HOME FOR RYMER

Star Nelson Bay follower Jayden Rymer has been in very consis- tent form this season for the Marlins. At eighteen years of age, he is already a leader at a Club that he has played at since he was eight years old. Jayden’s parents are Victorian, with Dad playing senior football in the old Murray River port town of Echuca. Jayden has lived in Nelson Bay all his life and made a point of advising us that “I love Nelson Bay, it is home and it’s great living here”. Playing footy for the Marlins all of his life, Jayden was one of the first young players accepted into the Sydney Swans Academy. Jayden attended the Academy all the way through to the Under 18 level, whilst also continuing his playing duties with Nelson Bay. Season 2015 saw Jayden make the big move to Sydney, following in the footsteps of Cardiff’s Isaac Heeney. We asked Jayden to give us an appraisal of how he went in Sydney (remembering that he was seventeen at the time). He was very open and honest, indicat- ing that he was very young, immature, not committed enough and found living in Sydney and away from Nelson Bay very hard. When he was in Sydney, Jayden played with the NSW/ACT Rams. Already struggling, the going got a lot tougher for Jayden when a groin injury prevented him playing at the National Under 18s carnival. Upon missing the Na- tional Carnival, Jayden made the very difficult decision to leave the Rams and Sydney, returning to Nelson Bay in May 2015. Jayden indicated that moving home was the best thing to do for him, feeling far more comfortable in Nelson Bay with the support of his family and the Marlins. When asked about further attempts to be drafted into the Australian Football League, Jayden said that he may have another crack when he is a bit older and more mature. Jayden still holds out hopes of being drafted one day in the not too distant future. Jayden will finish this season with Nelson Bay and then look at his options. If he decides to have make another attempt to join the AFL, Jayden is looking at playing in the NEAFL, getting good football under his belt and possibly attracting the interest of AFL recruiters. With a strong build for an 18 year old and at 183cm tall, Jayden fits the prototype of an inside or outside follower at the highest levels of our game. Jayden has started off the 2016 Black Diamond Cup season in excellent form, despite having to share ruck duties for part of the first couple of rounds. He indicated that the return from injury of Luke Price is enormous for the club, as Price is a good strong marking forward who provides direction for the forward line and a major target up forward. Jayden also agreed that ruckman Billy Barton is crucial for the Marlins’ followers as he constantly provides quality ball to Jayden, the Eddy brothers and the Dews brothers. Jayden spoke glowingly about the influence his father has had on his football, both when Jayden went to Sydney and also when he returned home. Jayden is extremely happy being home playing footy with the Nelson Bay Mar- lins, stating that the club have been very supportive of him, with a very good culture & a great bunch of blokes. Jayden is working as an apprentice bricklayer with local firm B & B Brick & Block, and that they have also been very supportive of his football exploits. Jayden Rymer will be pivotal to Nelson Bay’s chances of making the Final Four and beyond in season 2016. We wish him well in all of his football endeavours, both in 2016 and into the future.
