The University of Texas at Arlington, 2006 Supervising Professor: Dr. Bernd Chudoba During the conceptual design (CD) phase, various solution concepts must, and should, be explored to select the best flight vehicle size and configuration in order to meet the mission requirements. As the aerospace industry advances novel aerospace flight vehicle configurations promising larger operational performance and overall efficiency, demanding integrated flight vehicles like the flying wing configuration (FWC) or blending wing body (BWB) are under investigation. Some of these novel configurations rely on novel control effectors (CE) and complex flight control systems in order to obtain the desired performance objectives. Clearly, stability and control plays an important roll in the design of advanced flight vehicles. v Chudoba1 recognized that that the conceptual design of such vehicles requires a truly generic stability and control approach to enable consistent comparisons of novel aircraft configurations with conventional aircraft aircraft shapes. Consequently, AeroMech analyzes both symmetric and asymmetric flight vehicles in symmetric and asymmetric flight conditions. The methodology and software AeroMech contributes to (1) sizing primary control effectors to possess adequate physical control power throughout the flight envelope, the tool (2) provides trimmed aerodynamics for improved performance-optimal stability and control solutions, and (3) it analyses static and dynamic stability in all axes (open and closed loop) for ensure flight vehicle safety and compliance with certification regulations throughout the flight envelope. The development of this methodology and software has been following three fundamental steps: (1) derivation of the AeroMech methodology and mathematic frame- work, (2) development of the stand-alone AeroMech prototype software for validation purposes, and (3) integration of AeroMech into the multi-disciplinary design tool AVDS-PrADO for multi-disciplinary flight vehicle synthesis. Abstract The Blended Wing Body (BWB) aircraft offers a number of aerodynamic perfor- mance advantages when compared with conventional configurations. However, while operating at low airspeeds with nominal static margins, the controls on the BWB aircraft begin to saturate and the dynamic performance gets sluggish. Augmenta- tion of aerodynamic controls with the propulsion system is therefore considered in this research. Two aspects were of interest, namely thrust vectoring (TVC) and flap blowing. An aerodynamic model for the BWB aircraft with blown flap effects was formulated using empirical and vortex lattice methods and then integrated with a three spool Trent 500 turbofan engine model. The objectives were to estimate the effect of vectored thrust and engine bleed on its performance and to ascertain the corresponding gains in aerodynamic control effectiveness. To enhance control effectiveness, both internally and external blown flaps were sim- ulated. For a full span internally blown flap (IBF) arrangement using IPC flow, the amount of bleed mass flow and consequently the achievable blowing coefficients are limited. For IBF, the pitch control effectiveness was shown to increase by 18% at low airspeeds.

That’s because unusual-attitude training is the perfect occasion for aerodynamics training, and in turn depends on aerodynamics training for success. I don’t expect a pilot new to the subject to absorb everything here in one gulp. That’s not necessary; in fact, it would be beyond the call of duty for most—aspiring test pilots aside. But do give the contents a quick initial pass, if only to get the measure of what’s available and how it’s organized. Your flights will be more productive if you know where to go in the texts for additional background. Before we fly together, I suggest that you read the section called “Axes and Derivatives.” This will introduce you to the concept of the velocity vector and to the basic aircraft response modes. If you pick up a head of steam, go on to read “Two-Dimensional Aerodynamics.” This is mostly about how pressure patterns form over the surface of a wing during the generation of lift, and begins to suggest how changes in those patterns, visible to us through our wing tufts, affect control. This is possible in a horizontal shear wind that comprises a thin layer and a large wind speed. It is shown that the speeds reachable by modern gliders approach the upper subsonic Mach number region where compressibility effects become significant, with the result that the compressibility-related drag rise yields a limitation for the achievable maximum speed. To overcome this limitation, wing sweep is considered an appropriate means. The effect of wing sweep on the relevant aerodynamic characteristics for glider type wings is addressed. A 3-degrees-of-freedom dynamics model and an energy-based model of the vehicle are developed in order to solve the maximum-speed problem with regard to the effect of the compressibility-related drag rise. Analytic solutions are derived so that generally valid results are achieved concerning the effects of wing sweep on the speed performance. Thus, it is shown that the maximum speed achievable with swept wing configurations can be increased. The improvement is small for sweep angles up to around 15 deg and shows a progressive increase thereafter. As a result, wing sweep has potential for enhancing the maximum- speed performance in high-speed dynamic soaring.

    After Concorde, who will manage to revive civilian supersonic aviation? By François Sfarti and Sebastien Plessis December 2019 Commercial aircraft are flying at the same speed as 60 years ago. Since Concorde, which made possible to fly from Paris to New York in only 3h30, no civilian airplane has broken the sound barrier. The loudness of the sonic boom was a major technological lock to Concorde success, but 50 years after its first flight, an on-going project led by NASA is about to make supersonic flights over land possible. If successful, it will significantly increase the number of supersonic routes and increase the supersonic aircraft market size substantially. This technological improvement combined with R&D efforts on operational costs and a much larger addressable market than when Concorde flew may revive civilian supersonic aviation in the coming years. Who are the new players at the forefront and the early movers? What are the current investments in this field? What are the key success drivers and remaining technological and regulatory locks to revive supersonic aviation? EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Commercial aircraft are typically flying between 800 km/h and 900 km/h, which is between 75% and 85% of the speed of sound. It is the same speed as 60 years ago and since Concorde, which flew at twice the speed of sound, was retired in 2003, there has been no civilian supersonic aircraft in service. Due to a prohibition to fly supersonic over land and large operational costs, Concorde did not reach commercial success. Even if operational costs would remain larger than subsonic flights, current market environment seems much more favourable: since Concorde was retired in 2003, the air traffic has more than doubled and the willingness to pay can be supported by an increase in the number of high net worth individuals and the fact that business travellers value higher speed levels.
