Estimation of paleo-discharge of the lost Saraswati River, north west India Zafar Beg, Kumar Gaurav, and Sampat Kumar Tandon Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Bhopal, Earth and Environment Sciences, India ([email protected], [email protected], [email protected] ) The lost Saraswati has been described as a large perennial river which was 'lost' in the desert towards the end of the 'Indus-Saraswati civilisation'. It has been suggested that this paleo river flowed in the Sutlej-Yamuna interfluve, parallel to the present-day Indus River. Today, in this interfluve an ephemeral river- the Ghaggar flows along the abandoned course of the ‘lost’ Saraswati River. We examine the hypothesis given by Yashpal et al. (1980) that two Himalayan-fed rivers Sutlej and Yamuna were the tributaries of the lost Saraswati River, and constituted the bulk of its paleo-discharge. Subsequently, the recognition of the occurrence of thick fluvial sand bodies in the subsurface and the presence of a large number of Harappan sites in the interfluve region have been used to suggest that the Saraswati River was a large perennial river. Further, the wider course of about 4-7 km recognised from satellite imagery of Ghaggar-Hakra belt in between Suratgarh and Anupgarh in the Thar strengthens this hypothesis. In this study, we have developed a methodology to estimate the paleo-discharge and paleo- width of the lost Saraswati River. -

Lying diagonally 24˚ N and 37˚ N latitudes and 61˚ E and 75˚ E longitudes, and covering an area of 87.98 million hectares. Topographically, the country has a continuous massive mountainous tract in the north, the west and south-west and large fertile plain, the Indus plain. The northern mountain system, comprising the Karakoram, the Himalays, and the Hindu-Kush, has enormous mass of snow and glaciers and 100 peaks of over 5400m in elevation. From Arabian Sea to the second highest peak in the world, K-2 (8,563m), it is the greatest change in elevation within any sovereign state on earth. More than 80% of the country is arid or semiarid. Due to this extensive aridity, the natural forest area is very small (about 5% of the total area) Pakistan’s Ecological Zones WWF- Global 200 Ecoregions Pakistan has five diverse and representative ecoregions included in Global 200 Ecoregions, identified by WWF. Sir Creek: the Origin and Development of the Dispute Between Pakistan and India
IPRI Journal 1 SIR CREEK: THE ORIGIN AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE DISPUTE BETWEEN PAKISTAN AND INDIA Dr Rashid Ahmad Khan∗ ir Creek is one of the eight long-standing bilateral disputes between Pakistan and India that the two countries are trying to resolve under S the ongoing composite dialogue process. It is a dispute over a 96 km (60 miles) long strip of water in the Rann of Kutch marshlands of the River Indus, along the border between the Sindh province of southern part of Pakistan and the state of Rajasthan in India. For the last about 40 years, the two countries have been trying to resolve this row through talks. Although, like other bilateral issues between Pakistan and India, the row over Sir Creek, too, awaits a final solution, this is the only area where the two countries have moved much closer to the resolution of the dispute. Following a meeting between the foreign ministers of Pakistan and India on the sidelines of 14th SAARC Summit in New Delhi, an Indian official announced that the two countries had agreed on a common map of Sir Creek, after the completion of joint survey agreed last year. “W e have one common map of the area, from which we will now work and try and see how far we can take this issue to a resolution, hopefully,” declared the Indian Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon after Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Mr. Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri, met his Indian counterpart, Mr. Pranab Mukherji in New Delhi on 2 April 2007.1 W hile discussing the prospects of the resolution of this issue in the light of past negotiations between the two countries, this paper aims to examine the implications of the resolution of this issue for the ongoing peace process between Pakistan and India. -

Five key gaps are addressed here. nderstanding India's vulnerability: Using earthquake science to enhance Udisaster preparedness Every year, thousands flock to Kashmir, in India and Pakistan to marvel at her spectacular scenery and majestic mountain ranges. However, the reality of our location and mountainous surroundings is an inherent threat of devastating earthquakes. In addition to accepting earthquakes as a South Asian reality, we as humanitarian respondents as well as risk reduction specialists must now look to science to enhance disaster risk mitigation and preparedness.The humanitarian communalities know little about what scientific communities have discovered and what could be used to mitigate risk of earthquakes. Similarly, scientific communities need to know how to put scientific knowledge in mitigation perspective from the point of view of non-scientific communities. How do we bridge this gap? We at AIDMI acknowledged this gap, and from the overlapping questions, we selected four key areas relevant to Kashmir and South Asia and discussed them in this issue. It has become accepted 5 that cyclical change in sediment delivery from source catchments may lead to cyclical movement 6 of boundaries such as the gravel front, particularly in the proximal segments of sediment routing 7 systems. In order to quantitatively assess how variations in sediment transport as a consequence 8 of change in relative sea-level and surface run-off control stratigraphic architecture, we develop a 9 simple numerical model of sediment transport and explore the sensitivity of moving boundaries 10 within the sediment routing system to change in upstream (sediment flux, precipitation rate) and 11 downstream (sea level) controls. We find that downstream controls impact the shoreline and sand 12 front, while the upstream controls can impact the whole system depending on the amplitude of 13 change in sediment flux and precipitation rate. -

The Met office has said that weather remained cold and dry in most parts of the country on Sunday. Dense fog prevailed over plain areas of Punjab and Sukkur division. Dense fog is likely to occur in plain areas of Punjab and upper Sindh during the night and morning hours on Monday. As the blanket of fog disrupted normal traffic on motorways and national highways in Punjab and Sukkur division it also disrupted flight and train schedule due to poor visibility. With regard to synoptic situation the Met office said that a westerly wave is likely to enter western parts of the country tonight and likely to grip upper parts on Monday. It may persist over northern areas till Tuesday. Predicting rain/snowfall on Monday and Tuesday, it said rain/thunderstorm is expected at scattered places in Malakand, Hazara, Mardan, Quetta, and Zhob divisions, Fata, Gilgit Baltistan and Kashmir while at isolated places in Bannu, Peshawar, Kohat, Kalat, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Sargodha divisions and Islamabad on Monday/Tuesday.
