A Celebration of the Art, Science and Inventions of Steve Mann @ digifest 2004 : On The Move Introduction Since its inception in 2002 digifest has established itself as Canada’s premiere festival of digital culture and innovation, showcasing Canadian and international visionaries in the realms of digital art, science and design. Produced by The Design Exchange in partnership with Harbourfront Centre and the Ontario Science Centre, digifest 2004: On the Move will investigate the cultural implications of digital mobility and the nomadic nature of information and identity within connected culture. The economics, art and science of digital mobility will be examined by renowned innovators from the fields of engineering, industrial design, interactive film, graphic design, robotics, intelligent fashions and wireless gaming, each addressing one of our sub-themes: Home, Self and Tribe. Our Keynote Speaker at digifest 2004: On the Move will be Professor Steve Mann of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty at the University of Toronto. Professor Mann is internationally renowned for his contributions to art and science as the developer of the first wearable computer and as the driving force behind 3 decades of artistic and scientific experimentation as a pioneer in exploring life as a cyborg. Like so many Canadian visionaries, however, Steve Mann is better known abroad than he is at home. The co-curators of digifest, Paola Poletto and John Sobol, plan to change that by celebrating the extraordinary scope and quality of Steve Mann’s work at all three presenting venues of digifest 2004 – The Design Exchange, The Ontario Science Centre and Harbourfront Centre -– in a major retrospective and showcase. -

‘TORONTO HAS NO HISTORY!’ INDIGENEITY, SETTLER COLONIALISM AND HISTORICAL MEMORY IN CANADA’S LARGEST CITY By Victoria Jane Freeman A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Toronto ©Copyright by Victoria Jane Freeman 2010 ABSTRACT ‘TORONTO HAS NO HISTORY!’ ABSTRACT ‘TORONTO HAS NO HISTORY!’ INDIGENEITY, SETTLER COLONIALISM AND HISTORICAL MEMORY IN CANADA’S LARGEST CITY Doctor of Philosophy 2010 Victoria Jane Freeman Graduate Department of History University of Toronto The Indigenous past is largely absent from settler representations of the history of the city of Toronto, Canada. Nineteenth and twentieth century historical chroniclers often downplayed the historic presence of the Mississaugas and their Indigenous predecessors by drawing on doctrines of terra nullius , ignoring the significance of the Toronto Purchase, and changing the city’s foundational story from the establishment of York in 1793 to the incorporation of the City of Toronto in 1834. These chroniclers usually assumed that “real Indians” and urban life were inimical. Often their representations implied that local Indigenous peoples had no significant history and thus the region had little or no history before the arrival of Europeans. Alternatively, narratives of ethical settler indigenization positioned the Indigenous past as the uncivilized starting point in a monological European theory of historical development. i i iii In many civic discourses, the city stood in for the nation as a symbol of its future, and national history stood in for the region’s local history. The national replaced ‘the Indigenous’ in an ideological process that peaked between the 1880s and the 1930s. -

Staff to report back to the February 2017 meeting The Toronto Zoo is the largest zoo in Canada attracting thousands of visitors annually becoming a landmark location in our City. Home to over 5,000 animals it is situated in a beautiful natural habitat in one of Canada's largest urban parks. Opening its doors on August 15, 1974 the Toronto Zoo has been able to adapt throughout the years developing a vision to "educate visitors on current conservation issues and help preserve the incredible biodiversity on the planet", through their work with endangered species, plans for a wildlife health centre and through their Research & Veterinary Programs. I believe it would be appropriate to introduce a honourary street name for the section of Meadowvale Road between Highway 401 and Old Finch Avenue to recognize the only public entrance to the Toronto Zoo. -

ZB7.2 STAFF REPORT To: Board of Management From: Jennifer Tracey, Senior Director Marketing, Communications & Partnerships Subject: 2016 ADVERTISING EXPENDITURE Date: 2016-02-25 Summary: This report outlines the proposed media plan and expenditures related to the 2016 advertising campaign as provided for in the 2016 Operating Budget. The paid advertising will complement the public relations and event strategy to ensure we are reaching our target audiences in the Greater Toronto Area and beyond, and that we are communicating the right messages. Recommendations: It is recommended that the Board approve the following: 1. Expenditures to reimburse Public Inc. for any outsourced production costs related to advertising programs as required for the Toronto Zoo brand, not to exceed $229.0 thousand, plus HST; and, 2. Expenditures with ZenithOptimedia Canada Inc. for media purchases related to the 2015 advertising campaign, not to exceed $956.0 thousand, plus HST. Financial Impact: There are no financial implications related to approval of these recommendations as the related advertising expenditures are included in the Operating Budget for 2016. Background: The Toronto Zoo set out the following objectives which link directly to the goals in the recent Strategic Plan, to drive the Marketing, Communications & Partnerships planning for 2016: 1. Meet or exceed 1.325 million visitors with a positive net revenue; 2. The Toronto Ghosts & Hauntings Research Society Present s… About This Document: Since early October of 1997, The Toronto Ghosts and Hauntings Research Society has been collecting Toronto’s ghostly legends and lore for our website and sharing the information with anyone with an interest in things that go bump in the night… or day… or any time, really. If it’s ghostly in nature, we try to stay on top of it. One of the more popular things for a person with a passion for all things spooky is to do a “ghost tour”… which is something that our group has never really offered and never planned to do… but it is something we get countless requests about especially during the Hallowe’en season. Although we appreciate and understand the value of a good guided ghost tour for both the theatrical qualities and for a fun story telling time and as such, we are happy to send people in Toronto to Richard Fiennes-Clinton at Muddy York Walking Tours (who offers the more theatrical tours focusing on ghosts and history, see Image Above Courtesy of Toronto Tourism www.muddyyorktours.com) We do also understand that at Hallowe’en, these types of tours can Self Guided Walking Tour of fill up quickly and leave people in the lurch. News Release Aga Khan Museum Joins Sun Life Financial Museum + Arts Pass Program Toronto Public Library offers free access to 18 museums and cultural institutions Toronto (Tuesday, March 31, 2015) – The Aga Khan Museum has joined Toronto Public Library’s Sun Life Financial Museum + Arts Pass (MAP) program and now offers five passes per week at 50 library branches across Toronto. The pass grants a free family pass for two adults and three children to the Museum, and can be borrowed from Toronto Public Library using a valid adult library card, much the way someone might borrow a book from the Library’s collection. For a list of the 50 branches that now offer the Aga Khan Museum passes, visit torontopubliclibrary.ca/mappass “The MAP program offers unparalleled access to Toronto’s art galleries, museums and attractions,” said Vickery Bowles, City Librarian, Toronto Public Library. “We’re thrilled to welcome the Aga Khan Museum to the program. Editorial Mark Kingwell* Editorial Introduction to the Topical Issue “Does Public Art Have to Be Bad Art?” https://doi.org/10.1515/opphil-2019-0041 Overview Both the title and the call for papers for this topical issue were phrased with deliberate provocation in mind. So many discussions of public art seem to involve contentious views, citizen outcry, and conflict between ‘the general public’ (who must experience and live with the art) and the creators or curators of that art (who can sometimes seem, or be, elitist, arrogant, and irresponsible). The provocation, therefore, was deliberate but not without reflection. We wanted the articles in this issue to extend and expand on familiar disputes between citizens and government agencies, or corporations, who might commission public art works. We also wanted, naturally, to query the notion of ‘bad art’ in the context of the public sphere, especially in the places where everyday experience leads us to expect encounters with public art: parks, plazas, shared courtyards, airports, subway systems. It is worth noting the obvious links among these various sites, namely, that they are almost always urban and unavoidable. I may choose to drive to a non-gallery artwork such as Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty (1970, Great Salt Lake, Utah), or Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset’s Prada Marfa (2005, Valentine, Texas), or Seven Magic Mountains (2016, Las Vegas, Nevada) by Ugo Rondinone, or Alfredo Barsuglia’s Social Pool (2014, Mojave Desert, California). Here, remoteness is often part of the work.
