While Southwind Frank hasn’t been as dominant as he was as a freshman, he has still put together a four-for-five season and is currently riding a three-race win streak heading into Saturday afternoon’s 91st Hambletonian at the Meadowlands. But last Saturday he was back to his old self. He won by a measured three-quarters of a length. I never pulled the earplugs and never called on him. I was just sitting there letting him do his thing. With the top five finishers in each of the two Oaks elims advancing to Saturday’s $500,000 final, Broadway Donna was still able to punch her ticket. The elimination winners drew for posts 1 through 5 in the final (Celebrity Eventsy drew post 2 and Caprice Hill landed post 1) while the other eight had an open draw. “It could have been worse. We were hoping for better, but it could have been worse,” Miller said about drawing post 7 with Broadway Donna, the reigning divisional champion. Broadway Donna’s lone loss in 10 starts last year as a freshman came when she made a break while clearing to the lead at the top of the stretch in her Breeders Crown elimination.
