European Parliament 2014-2019 0119/2016 21.11.2016 WRITTEN DECLARATION submitted under Rule 136 of the Rules of Procedure on missing refugee children Deirdre Clune (PPE), Brian Hayes (PPE), Roberta Metsola (PPE), Patricija Šulin (PPE), Monica Macovei (ECR), Ivan Jakovčić (ALDE), David Casa (PPE), Esther de Lange (PPE), Claude Rolin (PPE), Mariya Gabriel (PPE) Lapse date: 21.2.2017 DC\1108753EN.docx PE594.661v01-00 EN EN 0119/2016 Written declaration, under Rule 136 of Parliament’s Rules of Procedure, on missing refugee children1 1. According to Europol, there are an estimated 10 000 refugee children missing in Europe, and these children are being targeted by pan-European criminal gangs for sexual abuse and slavery. 2. There is currently a lack of a cohesive EU-wide policy or protocol for dealing with refugee children when they go missing. 3. There is a need to ensure that unaccompanied refugee minors are adequately protected in the EU, including by identifying unaccompanied children upon disembarkation, registering them, carrying out a preliminary risk assessment and ensuring referral to the relevant child protection services. 4. Cases of missing refugee children should also be treated with the utmost urgency and seriousness when they are reported to European authorities. 5. The Council and the Commission are urged to make missing refugee children a top priority of the European Union’s migration and refugee policy, and to put a further emphasis on cooperation between Member States to combat criminal gangs that take advantage of these vulnerable children. 6. This declaration, together with the names of the signatories, is forwarded to the Council and the Commission.

  • 04092020 NS2 Nawalny Statement
Statement: Stop Nord Stream 2! As Members of the European Parliament, we call upon European officials and officials in EU member states to do whatever they can to stop the completion of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline now. The European Parliament has expressed its objections against Nord Stream 2 several times in the past. We do not want to see Europe's dependency on Russian energy supplies increased and we do not want to allow Russia to benefit from the proceeds of such energy exports to the EU in order to finance its aggressive policies. At the occasion of the murder attempt on the life of Alexey Navalny, we say: enough is more than enough. Stop Nord Stream 2! • Joint Letter on the Medical Treatment of Prisoners in Bahrain
H.E. the Head of the European Union Delegation to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Kingdom of Bahrain and the Sultanate of Oman Ambassador Michele Cervone d’Urso Brussels, 21 November 2019 Dear Ambassador Cervone d’Urso, We, the undersigned Members of the European Parliament, are writing to express our concerns about the cruel and inhumane treatment of several high-profile prisoners in Bahrain, and to ask that you urge the Bahraini authorities to immediately allow those prisoners access to adequate medical care. Human rights organisations and family members of the prisoners, whose detention is at least questionable in the first place, have reported that prison authorities are arbitrarily denying prisoners urgent medical care, refusing to refer them to specialists, failing to disclose medical examination results, and withholding medication as a form of punishment. Denying a prisoner needed medical care violates the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, known as the Mandela Rules. Jau Prison Medical negligence, delays, and arbitrary exercise of authority in Bahrain’s prison system have been well-documented by the international human rights community. According to Amnesty International, in many cases, this has escalated to the level of intentional ill-treatment and permanent damage to the health of individuals suffering from injuries or grave chronic illnesses. The cases of political leader Hassan Mushaima, 71, and academic and opposition figure Dr. Abduljalil Al-Singace, 57, are especially alarming. Both men have been arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment in relation to their peaceful role in the 2011 pro-democracy movement. Dr. Al-Singace has experienced abuse and torture while in prison, documented by several human rights organisations.

  • Letter to Mr Andrea Enria
Parlamento Europeo 60, rue Wiertz / Wiertzstraat 60 B-1047 Bruxelles/Brussel Mr. Andrea Enria Chairperson European Banking Authority B-1047 Bruxelles Brussels, 14 February 2018 Dear Mr Enria, We, the undersigned Members of the European Parliament, who served on the PANA Committee until the end of its mandate last year and participated in the ad-hoc Delegation to Malta, note reports in the international media [1] [2] that the European Banking Authority has begun a preliminary inquiry into the Maltese bank Pilatus Bank. We welcome this development unreservedly. Pilatus Bank has been singled out for scrutiny in three European Parliament reports in as many months: the PANA Committee of Inquiry’s report of 8 November 2017, the European Parliament’s resolution on the rule of law in Malta of 15 November 2017 and the report of the European Parliament PANA/LIBE ad hoc fact-finding mission report of 11 January 2018. These reports are based on a significant and growing body of leaked evidence from Maltese authorities and first- hand testimony that place Pilatus Bank at the centre of illicit financial flows from Malta’s citizenship-by-investment scheme, the sale of state assets, and unexplained inflows from high-risk jurisdictions like Azerbaijan to Maltese politically exposed figures. As Pilatus Bank is a fully-licensed eurozone bank, which now operates a branch in London in addition to its headquarters in Malta, any proceeds of criminal activity laundered through it contaminate European financial and real estate markets and can have a potentially harmful effect on regulatory and political institutions at both a national and a European level.
