In honour of National Tree Day on Sept. 23, representatives from each business and organization, the City of Selkirk and some members of the Selkirk Steelers gathered in Selkirk Park last Friday morning to help start planting 20 Lord Selkirk Maple trees and 49 Unity Maple trees. The plant site at Selkirk Park, near the agricultural building, was chosen to help reforest parts of the 200 acre park that have been damaged by fl ood waters in the past. Using horse-drawn wagons – repli- cas from pioneering days – the group set out from Grosse Isle and headed north up the Interlake Pioneer Trail, a former Canadian National rail line. When they reached Poplarfi eld, they took Highway 68 into town, where they fed and watered their horses and settled in for the night. Nick Samorodny, who grew up in Poplarfi eld, and his wife, Helen, who grew up in Chatfi eld, acted as trail masters for the group. “We organize the rides and we haul water for the horses,” said Nick. By Brian Bowman It was announced early last week that the Selkirk Royals were ranked as the top varsity boys’ “AAAA” volleyball team in the province. And the Royals went out and proved that rank- ing correct as they won the University of Manitoba tournament on Saturday with a thrilling 2-1 victory (25-20, 31-33, 15-13) over the St. Paul’s Crusaders. “We played quite well,” said Royals’ head coach Jeff Scarcello. “We were in control the whole fi rst set…and then in the second set at around 18 points, St. Paul’s picked it up a bit and made the game re- ally tight.” Scarcello was glad that the Royals had an oppor- tunity to face some adversity against a very good St. Paul’s team. “We had to perform with tight situations and a set on the line in the fi nal,” Scarcello said. “It was good to see how the guys performed in that kind of en- vironment.” The Royals reached the fi nal after downing Vin- cent Massey 2-0 (25-19, 25-19). Jamie Krause, a longtime Stonewall resident, and his partner, Ken Zoppa, of Oak Bluff, have joined forces to start a company which makes a pro- tective case for GoPro Hero cameras. The units, attached to the inside of a hockey net, provide the same angle/ vantage point as seen on T.V. while protecting the camera from fl ying pucks.
