He thanked his collaborators, the cast, and the crew. He then deviated from the formula and made this quip: “Thank you to all the straight white guys who dominated movies and TV so hard and for so long that stories about anyone else seem kind of fresh and original now.” Laughter and applause erupted in the Microsoft Theater. The joke succeeded with the audience because they knew it had a grain of truth – that despite the ever-changing American demographic, film and television have still been predominantly white (Smith, 2014).

H ollywood By H ollywood volume 1, issue 1 an introduction he entertainment industry is a tent-pole of American T culture. Brushing up against everything and anything, it is impossible to find something that hasn't at least partially been colored by Hollywood. Hollywood representations of things are often considered to be exaggerated and glamorized, with even the grittiest subjects it takes on given a glossy finish and a rose- colored tint. But what happens when Hollywood attempts to tell stories from within? How does the entertainment industry, one seemingly built upon selling an idea of mystery and perfection, paint itself? Is it selling the dream, presenting a world of glamor and anyone-can-do-it success? Or is there something more critical going on? Through examining media portrayals of the media industry, we hope to come away with a better understanding of how the world of entertainment presents itself, and whether or not we are ever able to peel back the curtain surrounding it. 1. Adobe® Premiere® Pro Customer Profile NBC Universal and Saturday Night Live Film unit behind successful late night comedy show embraces Adobe video workflow An interview with the SNL film unit’s director/producer and editor Remember the 1970s days of Saturday Night Live (SNL) and the Coneheads? Okay, you may be too young, but trust us: it’s as hilarious now as it was then. George Carlin was the first host, alongside comedy legends like Chevy NBC Universal Chase, Dan Aykroyd, Gilda Radner, Jane Curtin, and John Belushi. Today, the popular, late-night sketch comedy New York, NY and variety show lives on with a new and equally talented cast of characters—including Bill Hader, Fred Armisen, www.nbcuni.com Nasim Pedrad, Seth Meyers, and Vanessa Bayer—and new technologies that get fresh content on-air faster than Saturday Night Live ever. Adobe sat down with Rhys Thomas, film director and producer for the show, and Adam Epstein, freelance www.nbc.com/saturday- editor for the film unit, to talk about how they recently switched to an Adobe Premiere Pro workflow to bring night-live fresh video content to SNL fans each week—all in a three-day turnaround. Rhys Thomas Adobe: What is the film unit’s role on the show? Thomas: Firstly, and I have to get this out of the way, Saturday Night Live really is live. I don’t know how many people have given me a wink and a nudge and said, “But it’s not really live right?” It really is. With that explanation out in the open, I’ll now explain that the film unit essentially produces anything that’s not live.
