It’s a well known fact that for me at this point The Beatles are pretty much a way of life. My circadian rhythm is that of Ringo’s steady drum beat and Paul’s signature bass lines. The fact that I can’t see them together as a group breaks my heart. Imagining being at one of their concerts makes me wish someone would invent a time machine-- and fast. This is something that, while I will never be able to remedy com- pletely, with the help of tribute bands, can tend the unhealable wound-- pain management of sorts. As of now I’ve seen upwards of six different Beatles tribute bands (a few I’ve seen multiple times), a couple different Elvis tribute artists (which I’ve seen four years in a row now), a Frank Sinatra tribute, and a Buddy Holly tribute. All of them are fantas- tic and leave me feeling bad for anyone who’s experienced disappoint- ment viewing a tribute act. Many people see tribute artists and groups as corny and pathetic people that aren’t worthy of taking on the persona of their favorite art- ist for a couple hours a night. I’m sure that somewhere out there, there are groups and people like this that do exist-- I just haven’t witnessed it. I still don’t know where the general stereotype came from, and I don’t understand how, with so many great ones out there now, it has managed to cling on. I understand wanting them to be as much like the artist as possible, but to go in expecting perfection, like anything else, is ridiculous and ultimately unfair. Trust me, I’ve never seen a tribute artist and forgot that I was seeing a tribute artist. It’s not going to happen. I’ve spoken to members of a few Beatles tribute bands and the youngest person to ever receive the title of the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist, Cody Slaugh- ter. They all agree that what they do is a direct result of their love for the artist themselves and a celebration of their music. They aren’t trying to be John Lennon, or Elvis, or anybody else.
