Although this year has thrown many obstacles our way, we feel that the “show must go on.” In response to the COVID-19 situation, this year will look a little different. For the safety of our members and our customers, this year will be an online pre-order only sale. Our mission stays the same: to support our community’s green spaces, and to educate our community in the areas of gardening, horticulture, conservation, and related topics. GCH members serve as volunteers, and our profits from the Bulb Mart are given back to WELCOME the community in support of our mission. In the last fifteen years, we have given back over $3.5 million in grants to the community! The Garden Club of Houston’s first Plant Sale was held in 1942, on the steps of The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, with plants dug from members’ gardens. Plants propagated from our own members’ yards will be available again this year as well as plants and bulbs sourced from near and far that are unique, interesting, and well suited for area gardens. -

Historical Setting of the Guianan Plant Heritage The Guianas are embedded high in the green shoulder of northern South America, an area once known as the "Wild Coast". They are the only non-Latin American countries in South America, and are situated just north of the Equator in a configuration with the Amazon River of Brazil to the south and the Orinoco River of Venezuela to the west. The three Guianas comprise, from west to east, the countries of Guyana (area: 83,000 square miles; capital: Georgetown), Surinam (area: 63, 037 square miles; capital: Paramaribo) and French Guiana (area: 34, 740 square miles; capital: Cayenne). Perhaps the earliest physical contact between Europeans and the present-day Guianas occurred in 1500 when the Spanish navigator Vincente Yanez Pinzon, after discovering the Amazon River, sailed northwest and entered the Oyapock River, which is now the eastern boundary of French Guiana. -

A Field Guide to Flowering Plants of The Mekal Hills, Central India Authors Mr. Shivaji Chaudhry is currently working as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Environmental Science, Indira Gandhi National Tribal University. He has started his research life from G.B. Pant Institute of Himalayan Environment and Development as a research scholar and Technician. He has been recipient of number of National and International Fellowship. He has contributed 8 book chapters, 15 research papers, 54 IUCN redlist assessments. He has also completed 5 national and international consultancies. He contributed 2 new species of freshwater fishes and also reviewed 84 freshwater fishes of Eastern Himalaya. He has interests in biodiversity, taxonomy and ecology of plants and animals. Dr. Naveen Kumar Sharma is presently serving as a Professor at the Department of Botany. He did his M.Sc. in Botany with first class from the Banaras Hindu University and obtained his Doctoral degree from Jiwaji University, Gwalior. He has been in teaching profession since 2001. He did his post-doctoral training from the University of Austin, Texas USA. He has authored 42 research papers and 3 books, and has completed 2 projects. He is a life member of International Organization of Plant Proteomics, Japan. Dr. Nidhan Singh obtained his Masters and Doctorate in Botany from Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra, Haryana (India). He started his career as Assistant Professor at the Department of Botany, I.B. (PG) College, Panipat in 2006. He is presently serving as a senior Assistant Professor and Head, Department of Botany and Biotechnology. He is actively contributing to the floristic research of India through his regular explorations of Western Himalayas and other parts of country. -

WELCOME TO THE FISH BAY NATIVE PLANT GARDEN Tyre Palm This garden shows the types of plants and trees that grow best and naturally in Fish Bay. Before you excavate, use this garden area as a guide to what could grow on your land or may already be there. Tag trees on your building site for saving and only excavate the area covering the footprint of the home you are building. This garden is in greenspace owned by the Island Resources Foundation which permitted this education use. The Estate Fish Bay Owners’ Association was awarded a grant from the VI Department of Agriculture, Urban & Community Forestry Program to fund this project. Members of the community volunteered many hours to prepare the site, plant, and install the garden path and Eleanor Gibney, St John’s own botanist, guided us and was instrumental in creating this brochure. Thank you to all. Bay rum - Pimenta racemosa This beautiful native tree is the source of aromatic oil that is mixed with alcohol or rum to make the cologne or lotion known as bay rum which was extremely popular around the world in the period between 1880 and 1940. St. John was a major producer of bay oil. Locally, leaves are also used in home remedies and cooking. A medium sized evergreen tree, with smooth bark and very dark green spicy-scented foliage. Bay Rum Birchberry or Privet eugenia - Eugenia ligustrina A pretty shrub or small tree that makes an excellent hedge. The berries are edible, with a sweet, juicy, and slightly aromatic flesh. Black calabash - Amphetheca latifolia A native relative of the commoner calabash or gobi tree, black calabash is restricted to the larger guts and areas that receive a lot of freshwater runoff. -

They are effective in the trea tment of infectious diseases while simultaneously mitigating many of the side effect that are often associated with synthetic antimicrobials. The spread of drug resistance pathogens is one of most serious threats to successful treatment of microbial diseases. Plumeria alba Linn (Apocynaceae) is an aromatic plant which little information has been reported so far on the composition and activity of essential oil. This research focuses on the antimicrobial activity of essential oil. The essential oil of flowers was obtained by hydrodistillation with a Clevenger apparatus. The oil content was 0.3 (%w/w), on a dry weight basis. 196 2nd Myanmar Korea Conference Research Journal Evaluation of Total Phenol Content, Antimicrobial and Antioxidant Activities of Flower of Plumeria alba L. (Tayoksaga-hpyu) Suu Suu Win1, Moe Tin Khaing,2, NyoNyo Win3, Thidar Khaing4 Abstract This paper aims to explore the phytoconstituents, phenolic compound, total phenol content, antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of Plumeria alba flower which werecollected at Sagaing University of Education campus, Sagaing Region in Myanmar during June, 2017. Firstly, preliminary phytochemicals screening of selected sample was undertaken by using standard method which observed the presence of alkaloids, glycosides, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, tannins and steroids. Moreover, functional groups of phenolic compound were examined by spectroscopic method. After that, total phenol contents of ethanol, methanol, and water extracts of sample were performed by using the Folin-Ciocalteu Reagent method. In addition, antimicrobial activities of five solvent extracts were carried out using agar disc diffusion method, Finally, the antioxidant activity of ethanol, methanol, and water extracts of the sample was evaluated by 1, 1- diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl) DPPH Radical Scavenging Assay. The experimental results contribute that the rich phenol fractions of flowers of Plumeriaalba represent bioactive and a potential source of natural antioxidants. The developing countries greatly depend on plants, where a major role in health care is played by traditional medicine. There are over 275,000 species of flowering a plant in the world today. Plumeria alba is one of such plants that has been frequently used as medicine which belongs to the genus Plumeria and Family Apocynaceae.
