I also had the opportunity to meet Jake Owen and get my picture taken with not only him but also with his dog Mer- le! A highlight of my fair experience was singing the National Anthem for the Jake Owen concert in front of thousands and thousands of people, and winning first place and best dressed in the Barnyard Battles with my team - Kings & Queens! I spent the summer attending town parades and festivities, and I will be attending a few more before my reign is over. In August I went down to Des Moines to attend the Iowa State Fair Queen Competition where I met 101 incredible young women. I didn’t bring home the crown, but I had an amazing experience that I will never forget! After the state fair, I started college at NIACC where I am majoring in Elementary Education. In February I attended the annual Fair Appreciation Din- ner where I shared a few words and played reverse bingo and Family Feud. Throughout the year I attended libraries where I read to kids and talked to them about my fair queen experience. I am sad my reign is almost over, but I look forward to helping with the 2013 Butler County Fair Queen Competition and handing the crown over to the new queen. I know she will have an amazing and unforgettable experience just like I did! I would first like to thank God for giving me the opportunity to represent Butler County and all the amazing experiences I have been able to have. Next, I would like to thank all of my family and friends who have supported me through it all. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without you. I would like to thank Harrison-Thornburgh Insurance for sponsoring me in the queen competition. I would like to thank the Fair Queen Committee for the fun day at the queen competition and es- pecially Inga Helmke the 2011 Butler County Fair Queen. I would like to thank the Fair Board for all the hard work they do to make the fair great. Lastly but not least, I would like to thank everyone that came to the 2012 Butler County Fair, and I hope you come back this year! Katelyn Nolte 2012 Butler County Fair Queen 3 Elm Street t N

This strong-willed and superstitious group of miners will face the day-to-day challenges of mining, aided by the paranormal investigators who unravel the mys- teries surrounding the mine, including historic Masonic connections and a spirit who has been known to haunt the area for generations. Ghost Mine is produced by 51 Minds, an Endemol company, with Mark Cro- nin (Rock of Love with Bret Michaels), David Caplan and Jay Bluemke (Ghost Hunters, Ghost Hunters Academy) serving as Executive Producers. In that light, Just Feels www.ticketweb.com Good might just as accurately be titled “Just Feels Real.” The assertion that Just Feels Good is actually a more intimate introduction into the psyche of Thompson Square than their self-titled debut is a big statement considering that album’s history-making in-roads. Powered by a trio of hit singles including the No. 1 double-platinum-selling “Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not” Friday Fair Day Sponsor as well as “I Got You” and “Glass,” Thompson Square swept the 2012 Vocal Duo awards (CMA, ACM, CMT, ACA). “Kiss” was the most-heard song at country radio in 2011 (Mediabase), and secured multiple-week runs atop the sales and ring- tone charts as well as two GRAMMY nominations. Major media (Leno, Kimmel, Conan and more) and major tours (Jason Aldean, Lady Antebellum, Luke Bryan) put them in front of tens of millions of viewers and two million concert goers. Thompson Square is also the only established married duo to ever receive CMA Vocal Duo of the Year honors. Keifer and Shawna Thompson’s hot streak continued when they won the ACM Vocal Duo of the Year honors for the 2nd consecutive year in April 2013. That bigger story, which they’ve told often, is one of Nashville’s best-known 10-year overnight successes. Arriving in Music City the same week – Keifer from Miami, Oklahoma, Shawna from Chatom, Alabama – they met almost immediately at a singing competition and have been inseparable since. Realizing their solo as- pirations weren’t getting any traction, they finally closed the second ring in their marriage-and-music connection. Thompson Square signed as the flagship artist on Stoney Creek Records, and the rest is history. “Ever since we’ve been married, we’ve always worked together,” Shawna says, trying to explain their multilayered success. “I don’t know that the other way would work.” Keifer adds, “We actually tried it at the very beginning, and it didn’t. Obviously we fight like everybody else and, when we do, we do it really well. But if we had a choice between being together all the time and not being together, we’d choose the former.” That sense of unity, and the natural struggle implicit in any committed rela- tionship, gives Just Feels Good a deeper well of experience upon which to draw, particularly when writing. “As a married couple duo, you’re a little gun shy about doing certain things, because you don’t want to be coined as the boring married couple,” Keifer admits. “And that’s just not our lifestyle at all – it’s actually quite the opposite. We grew up in very rural small towns where it’s redneck and people like to party. So we stretched the reins with our writing to keep from being painted into a corner.” Shawna and Keifer have credits on six of the album’s 13 songs, including the first single “If I Didn’t Have You,” already their fastest selling AND rising to date. That song’s message of a big, even universal, love is echoed in postcard-picture “Maybe It’s You” and the rhythmic, who-out-kicked-who debate of “For The Life Of Me.” 8 Kid’s Day Activities 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Butler County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Management Area 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Butler County Fair Fun Train Grounds 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Bird House Building Hospitality Pavilion Area 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Balloon Artist Daryl Anderson Hospitality Pavilion Area 10:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. Butterfly Catch

he Butler County Fair Foundation has been in- strumental in raising funds for several improve- ments on the fair grounds in the past decade. These im- provements have made the grounds more accessible and enjoyable for thousands of visitors each year - whether it is to enjoy the fair, or one of the other events that take place on these facilities. The project we have set our sites on is to build a new restroom and first-aid facility at the grand-stand entrance. To lay the groundwork to finance such a project the foundation will have an on-going campaign selling three sizes/prices of ENGRAVED BRICKS. The bricks will (initially) be laid in the courtyard 319-346-2400 319-347-6691 between the floral hall and exhibit buildings at the main gate entrance. Parkersburg Aplington Visiting with people who have already purchased a brick has been a very endearing trip down mem- ory lane. It has been rewarding to hear the stories of people wishing to honor loved-ones, and cherish their fair memories. While searching old records for the years of service of past Fair Board President and Director, J Francis Allan, we uncovered a telegraph received from United States President Dwight D Eisenhower congratulating the citizens of Butler County the Fair’s centennial in 1956. The Codners, too, shared stories of relatives homesteading in Butler County. The legacy they have Complete livestock services left behind, and impact they had on creating Butler County’s business development. But one of my fa- Ultrasound • Boarding Kennels vorite bricks is from Carol Ann Kruse, faithful fixture of the floral hall, who simply states “I Love the Hill’s Science & Prescription Diets Butler County Fair!” It is the wishes of the Fair Foundation that everyone who holds fond memories of fair experiences, Grooming Services • In-house laboratory or the people who have played a role in making Butler County the great county it is today, will choose to Ultrasonic dental de-scaler join in this campaign to keep our facilities accessible for generations to come. The three sizes of bricks range in price from $125 to $500. Your tax-deductable donation will not only make these improvements possible, but will be a continuing reminder for you and all our visitors, of what it took to create the strength of Butler County. See our brick display on the grounds during the fair for a chance to share your story and ‘put your memories in stone’ while supporting this worthy cause. Or contact Jennifer Heeren, BCF Foundation Chairman at (319)267-2378. We’ll be glad to help you Leave Your Mark on Memory Lane!
