Jazz Musicale 2019 - Professional Instructors Donald Zentz (Director, Reeds, Band) Director of Jazz Studies at the Grammy winning Douglas High SOTA, Don Zentz directs the jazz bands, other ensembles, teaches saxophone and other music courses. He was the prior Director of Fine & Performing Arts for 12 years at the prestigious Bolles School, a music professor at Valdosta State University, FCCJ, and UNF, and a middle and high school band director in Georgia and Florida. Don and his bands have won consecutive superior ratings and recognitions over the years, and he continues to be one of the most in demand music educators, as a clinician, adjudicator, guest band director including All-State, and music camp faculty. His articles have appeared in numerous publications and he considered a ‘go to’ source in jazz, concert band, and all things music education in the state of Florida, serving high offices in regarded music organizations. A Keilwerth Saxophones Signature Artist since 1995, Don regularly performs with the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, in off-Broadway shows and musicals, and with popular groups in the southeast. He was the director of the historical St. Johns River City Band jazz and brass bands, and the endless list of shared appearances include the Larry Elgart Orchestra, Dave Brubeck, Dizzy Gillespie, Nancy Wilson, and the Voices. Scott (Brass, Band) From Phil, P.A, the first graduate of the UNF Jazz Program under Rich Matteson, JB Scott earned his masters degree at FIU studying with Arturo Sandoval. His playing career has included the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus ( Japan), and leading the famed Dukes of Dixieland in New Orleans that was featured on the PBS special “A Salute to Jelly Roll Morton” and with Skitch Henderson and the New York Pops at . He has performed with many legendary artists such as Al Hirt, Paquito D’Rivera, Jeff Hamilton, Lynn Seaton, and Tim Hagans. An Associate Professor teaching trumpet at UNF, JB is the Dir. Of Jazz, Director of the Great American Jazz Series and of the award-winning UNF JE 1 flagship big band. He is a Warburton Signature Trumpet Artist, a popular adjudicator, artist/clinician for music programs and music camps, was profiled in the 2010 book, “The New Face of Jazz,” and the 2017 Jacksonville Jazz Festival “Hall of Fame” Inductee for his contributions to the jazz community. Website: www.kellyscottmusic.com Lisa Kelly (Vocals, Combo) A multi award-winning vocalist, composer, arranger, Lisa Kelly is regarded among the true jazz vocal song stylists. She has been featured nationally and internationally in jazz clubs, festivals, important venues, and for jazz societies including the Montreux Jazz Festival, the Kennedy Center, Festival Vien at the Vienna State Opera House, and the Van Wezel Performing Arts Center. Lisa has been the featured vocalist with the Larry Elgart Orchestra, the St. Johns River City Band, UNF JE 1, and appeared with many notables including Ed Calle, Jane Monheit, Arturo Sandoval, Danny Gottlieb, and John Lee. Earning her B.M. and M.M. at UNF, she taught music theory, vocal jazz, and other music courses at LaVilla Middle SOTA, Douglas Anderson High SOTA, in interim at UNF, and at the First Coast Community Music School. A popular guest artist/clinician, camp clinician, and adjudicator, Lisa is a regarded vocal jazz pioneer in the state of FL. She was profiled in the 2010 book, “The New Face of Jazz,” and inducted into the 2013 Jacksonville Jazz Festival “Hall of Fame.” Lisa and trumpeter JB Scott co-lead small groups and big bands and have co-released 6 successful CD projects. Website: www.kellyscottmusic.com Jeff Phillips (Piano, Rhythm) A much in demand pianist, accompanist, jazz artist/clinician, and adjudicator, with a B.M. in Music Education, Jeff Phillips serves as adjunct faculty of the acclaimed Harrison High School for the Arts in Lakeland, FL, working with rhythm section and band students. He has presented state-wide jazz clinics for high school to collegiate music programs, at FMEA and other music conventions and seminars, and has served in the writing of audition materials and in audition selections for the annual All-State competitions. Jeff is a pianist at the Walt Disney World Theme Parks, appearing weekly as a soloist and with the jazz band at the Grand Floridian, with years of playing tuba or keyboard in seven different Disney groups, including the Rhythm Rascals, and with Bill Allred and the Hollywood Hit Men. His combination of organ and piano techniques, playing bass pedals with his feet and keyboard with his hands, became a signature presentation. Jeff has performed with many notables, including , Buddy DeFranco, Bob Mintzer, Louis Bellson, Allan Vache, Bob Draga, Bill Allred Classic Jazz Band, Linda Cole, the St. Johns River City Big Band and others. He has worked consistently with Lisa Kelly, duo to quartet, and with the Lisa Kelly/JB Scott groups. He has been featured on many CD recordings, radio and TV shows. … And Special Guest Clinicians!
