Hundreds of people converged on the Farmers Air pavilion area to watch former world champion blade shearer Peter Casserly from Canterbury cut the wool off her. The ewe’s fleece length was measured and verified at 58 centimetres, 3cm longer than the previous Guinness Book of Records mark set in Masterton in 2018 when another wild sheep was shorn. It took Casserly about 15 minutes to give Gizzy Shrek her haircut. “She was as good as gold about it, very well behaved,” he said. “I think she loved it. She was very relaxed the whole time.” The fleece was quite “fluffy” on her back but there was a lot of it around the shoulders. Casserly used shearing blades rather than an electric shaver to add to the novelty of the event. The 72-year-old is the world recordholder for sheep shorn by hand blades in a nine-hour period. Gizzy Shrek’s fleece weighed 14.5kg, well short of the world record for weight. “The wool quality was pretty good,” said Show wool head steward Ross Buscke. “It was sound as a bell. It never had a LIGHTENING HER LOAD: Former world champion Peter Casserley, break in it and the colour was remarkable.” with help from former New Zealand dog trials team captain Ginger Casserly said he felt a bit of tension ahead Anderson, makes his way through the fleece of Gizzy Shrek in front of the job. of a large crowd that surrounded the stage at the Poverty Bay “I felt a bit nervous about it but it always A&P Show on Saturday.
