Historical background The ancient town of Balakhna is among the hundred most important historic towns of Russia. The town was founded in 1474. Balakhna is the only town in the Niznhy Novgorod region where one can find cathedrals of the XVI century. Among them there is the St. Nicholas Church built after the successful Kazan campaign in 1552, and the Cathedral of the Christ Nativity. The unique Church of the Saviour is a family chapel of the Dobrynin family; the Church of the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple that keeps memories of its founders Pozharsky and Sheremetyev alive. Balakhna is the birthplace of the great Russian patriot Kuzma Minin. In 1611-1612 Minin together with Prince Dmitry Pozharsky gathered the Volunteer Army that liberated Moscow from Polish-Swedish invaders. Main sights:
