An Examination of Australians of Hellenic Descent in the State Parliament of Victoria Procopis Louca Victoria, the second most populated State in Australia, is widely claimed to include as its capital the third largest Grecophone city in the world, after Athens and Thessaloniki. The Victorian State Parliament has more members of Greek and Cypriot (Hellenic) background, than any other jurisdiction in the Commonwealth of Australia. Continuing a series of analyses of the role of elected State and Federal representatives of Hellenic descent in Australia (Louca, 2001), this paper will focus on the Victorian State Parliament, but with reference also to current and former Victorian Federal parliamentarians. There is an exploration of the cultural, political, social and personal influ- ences that guided these individuals to seek election to Parliament and their experiences as politicians with a Hellenic background. As at the beginning of 2002, six sitting members in the Victorian Parliament have a Hellenic background. Four represent the Australian Labor Party (ALP), two the Liberal Party. The previous workshops have all resulted in publications: The Politics of Retribution: the 1996 Federal Election (Allen & Unwin, 1997); Howard’s Agenda: the 1998 Australian Election (University of Queensland Press, 2000); 2001: The Centenary Election (University of Queensland Press 2002); Mortgage Nation: the 2004 Australian Election (Australian Public Intellectuals Network, 2005); and a two-part Special Issue of Australian Cultural History (2009 and 2010), Kevin07: The 2007 Australian Election. John Warhurst (ANU) was involved as co-convenor and co-edited from 1996-2005. The publications have been well reviewed by academics and well received by the general community. Writers such as Paul Kelly utilize the books as valuable sources for their interpretative histories of Australia. Copies of such Reviews and commentaries are available on request. Rationale:-The purpose of these projects is to bring together a team of around 22 to 25 comprising academics and practitioners to present and debate their points of view about the national election.

Australian Parliament Joint Standing Committee on Migration Submission No. 100 Joint Standing Committee on Migration Inquiry into Multiculturalism in Australia Submission by Dr JAMES JUPP AM, Australian National University This submission is directed at what is commonly called Multiculturalism, namely programmes to address cultural diversity. It is not concerned with issues of immigration or refugee policy, which properly belong to another enquiry, in my opinion. Of the seven terms of reference five revive long standing issues of immigrant and refugee settlement, while only the first two are concerned with social cohesion, integration, diaspora relations etc, which are conventional multicultural issues. Much of it repeats the “productive diversity” approach which was fashionable, but not very effective, more than ten years ago. The suggestion that migrants be assisted to start small businesses is just quaint – they already do in large numbers. Innovative ideas are best based on evidence and within an organisation dedicated to a specific policy area, neither of which has been the case in recentyears. They also require regular consultation with the appropriate stakeholders, in this case those working in the area of multicultural programmes and services and community development. Introduction – a Changing Society Multiculturalism as a Commonwealth policy was adopted in Australia in 1973 and developed in 1978 through the Galbally report on settlement services. This was at the turning point where continental European migration was starting to decline and the White Australia immigration policy was being abolished. It is worth asking whether local and international society has changed in the past thirty five years to the extent that the policy needs to be changed, abandoned or expanded.

In recent decades, Australian has seen a revitalization of religion, increasing numbers of those who do not identify with a religion (the “nones”), and the growth of religious minorities, including Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Sikhism. These changes are often understood as problematic for social cohesion. In this paper, we review some conceptualizations of social cohesion and religious diversity in Australia, arguing that the concept of social cohesion, despite its initial promise, is ultimately problematic, particularly when it is used to defend privilege.

The grandiose nature of this program and its ideological underpinnings of migrant assimilation dominate this period of Australian immigration history. The orthodox perception of this often referred to but surprisingly under-researched policy is that it was a dogmatic drive for migrant assimilation into the existing Australian culture.
