Clark On behalf of the Paddock Wood AC Committee I would like wish all our members, friends & families a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. 2012 was another successful year for Paddock Wood AC and we all now look forward with great anticipation to 2013 and being able see the long awaited Training Facilities at Putlands Sports & Leisure Centre come to fruition. The club has grown at a tremendous pace in 2012 and we now have close to 300 members. I’m sure this has a lot to do with the Olympic & Paralympic legacy but also I think our principles of offering friendly training and competition to everyone strikes a chord with people when they are looking around for a local athletic club to join. New Year’s Bash Don’t forget the PWAC New Year's Eve Bash at the Paddock Wood Primary School, a good night out for everyone with the live band "On Edge" playing into 2013 – ticket will be on sale very soon. Pre-Christmas Gathering & Presentations Evening Many thanks to Jeanette & Richard Elliott for organising the PWAC Pre Christmas Gathering and Presentation Evening on Friday 23rd November at the Hadlow Manor Hotel, from all accounts it was a very successful & enjoyable evening. Paddock Wood Training Track at Putlands Sports & Leisure Centre We are definitely in the final stages of working out the conditions of the lease agreement with the Paddock Wood Town Council. Fingers crossed we will have some really good news to announce in early 2013 and then we can plan the start of the building work for the training facilities at Putlands. 2013 Brooks Paddock Wood Half Marathon – 10am on Sunday 7 th April Entries are now open for our Half Marathon on Sunday 7th April. If you are not planning to run in the race then please can you consider volunteering to help out. It is the club’s biggest event and can only take place if we have an army of volunteers who are willing to assist before, during and after the race. Please don’t hesitate to contact James Ridger for details. Volunteers Wanted We are still looking for club members to assist at Paddock Wood AC, there are many activities that would benefit from an army of volunteers, so please contact any of the Committee Members or send us an e:mail on [email protected] if you can spare some time to help out. Putlands Sports & Leisure Centre Joint Venture with Paddock Wood Athletic Club Paddock Wood Athletic Club and the Putlands Sports Centre have a joint venture that gives all PWAC members a great opportunity to use the Sports & Leisure facilities being offered by Putlands Sports Centre at greatly reduced fees. There were thrills and spills aplenty as the field negotiated the steep wooded slopes of Shooters Hill. The race at the sharp end of the field was closely fought throughout with the over 40s represented by Mark Whittaker and Paul Hasler against the younger generation of Andrew Pickett and Chris Wyles. Whittaker started strong favourite having won the previous two races with some ease, but it was his first outing on this testing track in SE9. By contrast, Pickett had run at least 6 times on this course and never finished outside the top 3. Entering the tricky woodland section on the second lap Whittaker was leading the field, Pickett was fading after his early exertion and Chris Wyles was closing fast. With a mile to run it was wide open as Whittaker slowed with a sprained ankle and Wyles challenged for his first victory. The final sprint saw Pickett rally and take the win by six seconds from Whittaker with Wyles a close third. Paul Hasler, winner of race 1, finished fourth leading a trio of Paddock Wood men in the top 10. Steve Throssell and Clayton Barrett (like Pickett another previous league champion), came in 8th and 10th to lead the charge for Larkfield AC. Mike Baron (Swanley and District) was the leading O50 master and Phil Wallace (Medway and Maidstone) once again asserted his authority on the M60 class. Liz Weeks ran from the front to a second consecutive victory in the women’s race. Maria Heslop was 31 seconds in arrears after working her way to the front after a more conservative start. Annabelle Stearns was four seconds behind in third place. Looking down at the rest of the top 10 ladies it’s quite clear why Canterbury Harriers are dominating this season’s team competitions. Their quartet of fast ladies (Faye Roberts, Victoria Kenny, Nicola Kirby and Jenny Benson) all made it into the top 10 – again.
