Since that day I have endeavored to take up the mantle of stewardship of the legacy that is Cardinal Spellman High School, and I have been caught up in the joy, the challenges, the excitement, and the spirit that we call the Spellman Experience. We have worked hard as a team this year to forward that legacy in the classroom, on the athletic field, and on the stage. In new and innovative directions as well, through the creation of a strategic plan 2017-2022, through the collaboration of departments and faculty on new and exciting academic initiatives led by Paul Kelly, and through the spearheading of new marketing efforts led by Aimee Wetzel. Much has been accomplished and there is always more to be done. It is the life of a school. I have laughed and cried with students, alumni, parents, and faculty throughout this year. I have listened to so many stories of years gone by when meeting with and engaging alumni here on our campus, whenever they return for a visit. I have similarly listened to stories of aspiration told by prospective parents who wish for a Spellman education for their children yet to fill our halls with their exuberance. I have watched our community live and breathe and grow for this first year and I stand in amazement at the timelessness of the message of Cardinal Spellman High School and what it has meant to so many, and now…what it means to me! I have endured some personal loss this year as my mother age 65 suddenly passed from this life to receive her eternal reward in March, the very day our faith rally was moving the hearts and minds of our students! I have experienced the joy of sending my children to their first years of education in Pre-K and now Kindergarten this year, all while watching our freshman experience Spellman for the first time with me. Throughout it all, I remain convinced that the Spellman Experience does not dampen with time, but rather burns brighter in the hearts and minds of those whom it has touched. Spellman has made so many generations the better for having experienced it, and it continues to do so for today’s students… and for your faithful President. Bringing the joy of the Gospel, the pursuit of truth and the appreciation of beauty to all who seek them has been the work of this institution for so many years. I am thankful for another year in this tradition, and even more excited for the year to come, because I, like all of you, have experienced Spellman, and the flame it fans, and I know this year is going to be even greater! Daniel J. Hodes President 2 Cardinal Spellman • Tradition chairman’s letter Dear Members of the Spellman Community, The beginning of a school year is always an exciting time. Students have the opportunity to start fresh and to maximize their potential. The faculty, staff and administration are eager to engage our students in their educational endeavors. We are ready to welcome the Class of 2021 and for the new year to begin. As we launch into the school year, it is important to acknowledge our achievements because they provide the foundation and the springboard for the coming year. I am proud of our past year’s accomplishments. We continued to build on the foundation of a Catholic education established by the Sisters of St. Joseph offered through campus ministries services to our school and the broader community. We updated the infrastructure of our state-of-the art teaching and learning systems. We expanded the integration of the curriculum and continued training our faculty and staff. Thanks to the efforts of our Strategic Planning Committee, Spellman has successfully completed its third strategic planning process so that our direction has been charted for 2017-2022 and beyond. Using this framework, we will continue to focus on our goals: to prepare our students for future success, to integrate faith with action, to develop an expanded state-of-the-art campus, to strengthen our community relations and to manage our financial resources wisely. As we embark on the next important chapter for our school, I invite you to come back to our campus and join the excitement. There are so many ways that you too can experience Spellman including Masses, drama performances, athletics events, the Legacy Gala, class reunions, golf tournaments, open houses and so much more. Active engagement in our school goes beyond our students, faculty, administration and staff as it extends to all of us who share a connection to Spellman. In addition, contributing your valuable time, expertise and/or financial resources are greatly appreciated and instrumental in carrying out our mission as we continue to move our school forward.
