Before crossing the river to New York, Miller was Associate Producer of the acclaimed Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, NJ, from 1991 to 2004 where he produced over eighty musicals and plays including Animal Crackers starring Kristin Chenoweth, Follies starring Ann Miller, Gypsy starring Betty Buckley and Deborah Gibson, and Stephen Schwartz’s new musical Children of Eden . Miller may be new to the leadership of Surflight, but he is no stranger to the Beach Haven theatre's 450- seat venue. While performing in a high school production of Funny Girl in his hometown of Irvington, NJ, Miller was offered an apprenticeship at Surflight by the show’s director and Surflight founder Joseph P. Hayes. That first introduction to summer theatre at the Jersey Shore in 1975 was followed by two subsequent seasons as an apprentice and, eventually, as a member of the acting company in 1978.

The Television Academy’s founding fathers struggle to name the award: Television Academy founder Syd Cassyd suggests “Ike,” the nickname for the television iconoscope tube. Pioneer television engineer and future (1949) Academy president Harry Lubcke suggests “Immy,” a nickname for the image-orthicon camera tube instrumental in the technical development of television. “Immy” is feminized as “Emmy” because the statuette, designed by engineer Louis McManus (who enlisted his wife Dorothy to model for it) depicts the winged “muse of art uplifting the electron of science.” 1949 First Emmy Awards – given to Los Angeles area programming – take place at the Hollywood Athletic Club on January 25. Tickets are $5.00. It is broadcast on local station KTSL. There are less than a million television sets in the U.S. The master of ceremonies was popular TV host Walter O’Keefe.     Everything Old is New Again: A History of San Diego Junior Theatre, 1948-2008 Darlene Gould Davies and Lizbeth Persons Price S an Diego Junior Theatre (SDJT) is no longer a youngster. In fact, it has passed through middle age and now is in its mature years. Yet the vibrancy of what is regarded as the oldest continually operating children’s theatre in the United States remains strong. It retains the zest of a kid, a SDJT kid! In its first sixty years of operation, Junior Theatre touched the lives of over a million young people. Myriad classes were conducted and sizeable audiences were reached. The San Diego Commission for Arts & Culture gave SDJT the coveted ranking of four, the highest ranking achievable. Its alumni include Tony Award-winners Brian Stokes Mitchell, Christian Hoff,1 and Tony Award-nominee Casey 2 Nicholaw. Tony Award-winning actor Brian Stokes Mitchell made his theatrical SDJT has been represented debut at age 14, playing Conrad Birdie in the San Diego Junior Theatre’s on Broadway by alumni production of Bye Bye Birdie. Some of its young actors, such as Dennis Hopper, Victor Buono, and Raquel Tejada Welch became noted film actors, while Gore Verbinski directed three Pirates of the Caribbean films. Not all alums have gone into theatre or film, however. Former SDJT kids have assumed leadership roles in numerous areas of civic and business endeavors. Finally, thank you to my sister, Ellen, for leading me to this topic. Abstract This paper seeks to determine the effect that Tony Awards have on the longevity and gross of a Broadway show. To do so, I examine week-by-week data collected by Broadway League on shows that have premiered on Broadway from 2000 to 2017. Much literature already exists on finding the effect of a Tony Award on a show’s success; however, this paper seeks to take this a step further. In particular, I look specifically at the differing effects of nominations versus wins for Tony Awards and the effect of single versus multiple nominations and wins. Additionally, I closely examine the differing effects that Tony Awards have on musicals versus plays. I find that while all nominated musicals see a boost in weekly gross as a result of being nominated, only plays that are able to go on to win multiple awards experience a boost because of their nomination. The most significant improvement in expected longevity that can be caused by the Tony Awards occurs for a musical that wins at least three awards, while plays need additional wins in order to see a significant increase in their longevity.
