Elected as a Republican, he served as an Illinois state representative from 1967-1974. During this period he served as majority leader, 1971-1972, and a delegate to the Illinois state Republican conventions, 1958-1974. Hyde was elected to the Ninety-fourth and subsequent fifteen U.S. Congresses, 1975-2007. Hyde acted as the chair for the Committee on the Judiciary for the 104th-106th Congresses, as well as the chair for the Committee on International Relations for the 107th-109th Congresses. Mr. Hyde passed away on November 29, 2007, in Chicago, IL. Scope & Content The Henry J. Hyde papers contain 375.25 linear feet spanning the years 1923-2008 (bulk 1961-2008) and include correspondence, speeches, notes, reference materials, appointment books, reports, news clippings, House resolutions/bills/etc. press releases, 2 memorabilia, publications, audio cassettes, videos, films and photographs relating to his tenure as a U.S. Congressman. Sub-series 4: Artifacts, 1945-2007, Boxes 223-231 Sub-series includes statues, paper weights, glass awards, medals, badges, and figurines. Sub-series 5: Scrapbooks, 1961-2006, Boxes 232-252 Sub-series includes oversized scrapbooks filled with news clippings and photographs. Restrictions: None Separations: None Series 12: Audio-Visual, 1932-2007, Box 253-376 Series includes audiocassettes, CDs, DVDs, VHS tapes, Umatic tapes, Betacam tapes, one 16mm film, and photographs. Sub-series 1: Audio, 1951-2006, Boxes 253-255 Sub-series includes audiocassettes, microcassettes, and CDs (compact discs). Microcassettes have not been reviewed as of June 2016. Some audiocassettes have playback damage and one tape needs to be repaired (tape is cut) in order to playback. Sub-series 2: DVDs, 1983-2004, Boxes 255-256 Sub-series includes DVDS. Original labels on DVDs and cases for Volume 1- 14 are often inaccurate. 5 Sub-series 3: Umatic, 1981-2000, Boxes 257-269 Sub-series includes Umatic tapes. Tapes have not been reviewed as of June 2016. Sub-series 4: Betacam, 1998, Boxes 270-272 Sub-series includes Umatic tapes. Tapes have not been reviewed as of June 2016. Sub-series 5: VHS, 1981-2005, Boxes 273-341 Sub-series includes VHS tapes and some related documents. Seven blank tapes were discarded. Sub-series 6: Film, undated, Box 342 Sub-series includes one 16mm film stored on projection reel in the original box. Sub-series 7: Photographs, 1932-2007, Boxes 343-376 Sub-series includes color and black & white photographs, photo albums, scrapbooks that include photos, and related documents. Restrictions: Special equipment for viewing or listening to some materials may be required and may not be available at the Loyola University Chicago Archives & Special Collections. Separations: Blank VHS tapes were discarded (<0.5 l ft). Series 13: Restricted, 1965-2005, undated. Boxes 377-404 Series includes correspondence, medical records, financial records, recommendations, requests, and unpublished documents regarding the Clinton Impeachment investigation.
