Actually, with the truth shifted from religious to psychological one, textual evidence shows that Chillingworth is far from that bad, and as one of the protagonists, she also deserves the pity and sympathy from the reader. Keywords: Nathaniel Hawthorne, Roger Chillingworth, defense 1. Introduction As a man of letters, Nathaniel Hawthorne had struggled in literary circle for more than two decades in obscurity, before the publication of his masterpiece The Scarlet Letter (1850), which finally brought him both good reputation and profit with a soaring sale. With this work, it seems overnight Hawthorne was known to the public, as within ten days the work had a sale of 2500 copies, and in the next 14 years this book brought Hawthorne the profit as much as $1500. The Scarlet Letter, set in the 1640s New England, narrates the story of adultery and redemption of a young lady Hester Prynne. From the masterpiece, the reader will always generate an endless number of meanings from different perspectives. So far, scholars have conducted their researches from different perspectives, such as redemption of religion, feminism, Freud’s psychoanalysis, prototype theory and character analysis. -

ISSN 1799-2591 Theory and Practice in Language Studies, Vol. 5, No. 10, pp. 2164-2168, October 2015 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.17507/tpls.0510.26 A Brief Study on the Symbolic Meaning of the Main Characters’ Name in The Scarlet Letter Nan Lei Yangtze University, China Abstract—As a great romantic novelist in American literature in the 19th century and a central figure in the American Renaissance, Nathaniel Hawthorne is outstanding for his skillful employment of symbolism and powerful psychological insight. The Scarlet Letter, which is considered to be the greatest accomplishment of American short story and is often viewed as the first American symbolic and psychological novel, makes Nathaniel Hawthorne win incomparable position in American literature. With a brief introduction into The Scarlet Letter and a brief study on the two literary terms, i.e. symbol and symbolism, the paper attempts to expound Hawthorne’s skillful employment of symbolism in his masterpiece through the analysis of the symbolic meaning of the main characters’ name in this great novel. Index Terms—The Scarlet Letter, symbol, symbolism, character, name I. A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO THE SCARLET LETTER The Scarlet Letter is the masterpiece of Nathaniel Hawthorne, one of the most significant and influential writers in American literature in the 19th century. It is also regarded as the first symbolic novel in American literature for Hawthorne’s skillful use of symbolism and allegory. In the novel, the settings (the scarlet letter A, the prison, the scaffold, the rosebush, the forest, the sunshine and the brook) and the characters’ images, words and names are all endowed with profound symbolic meaning by Hawthorne. -

COTTON MATHER’S WONDERS OF THE INVISIBLE WORLD: AN AUTHORITATIVE EDITION by PAUL M. WISE Under the direction of Reiner Smolinski ABSTRACT In Wonders of the Invisible World, Cotton Mather applies both his views on witchcraft and his millennial calculations to events at Salem in 1692. Although this infamous treatise served as the official chronicle and apologia of the 1692 witch trials, and excerpts from Wonders of the Invisible World are widely anthologized, no annotated critical edition of the entire work has appeared since the nineteenth century. This present edition seeks to remedy this lacuna in modern scholarship, presenting Mather’s seventeenth-century text next to an integrated theory of the natural causes of the Salem witch panic. The likely causes of Salem’s bewitchment, viewed alongside Mather’s implausible explanations, expose his disingenuousness in writing about Salem. The themes of alienation and breaking society’s rules are ones to which many teenagers can readily relate. Viewed in this light, the novel can be approached as the story of a woman who let her heart rule her head and suffered the consequences. Hester Prynne’s plight can arouse sympathy, Arthur Dimmesdale’s hypocrisy can provoke anger, and Roger Chillingworth’s evil revenge can elicit disgust among today’s high school readers. This teacher’s guide presents a teaching approach to The Scarlet Letter that encourages student involvement. The Scarlet Letter, an overview . Synopsis The story takes place in the Puritan village of Boston, Massachusetts, during the first half of the 17th Century. Several years before the novel begins, Hester Prynne came to the New World to await the arrival of her husband who had business to conclude in Europe. However, Hester's husband was captured by Indians upon his arrival in New England and did not arrive in Boston as Hester expected. While living alone in Boston and believing her husband dead, Hester committed adultery and became pregnant. The village magistrates imprisoned her for this sin and decreed she must wear a scarlet "A" on the bodice of her dress for the rest of her life. While in prison, Hester, highly skilled in needlework, elaborately embroidered scarlet letter with gold thread. Before her release from prison, Hester was forced to stand on the public scaffold where all the villagers could see her. As the story opens, Hester is leaving the prison to take her position on the scaffold. She wears the scarlet letter and carries with dignity her three-month-old daughter Pearl. As Hester endures this public disgrace, Roger Chillingworth, an old man new to the village, asks members of the crowd about her and learns as much of her story as is commonly known. When he asks the identity of the child's father, he discovers Hester has refused to divulge this information. From the balcony overlooking the scaffold, the young Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale also asks for this information and eloquently appeals to Hester to publicly name her partner in sin. -

America has adopted as its own the Eden myth, which has provided the mythology of the American dream. This New Garden of America, consequently, has been a masculine garden because of its dependence on the myth of the Fall. Implied in the American dream is the idea of a garden without Eve, or at least without Eve's sin, traditionally associated with sexuality. Our canonical literature has reflected these attitudes of devaluing feminine power or making it a negative force: The Scarlet Letter. Mobv-Dick. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. The Great Gatsbv. and The Sound and the Fury. To recreate the Garden myth, Americans have had to reimagine Eve as the idealized virgin, earth mother and life-giver, or as Adam's loyal helpmeet, the silent figurehead. But Eve resists her new roles: Hester Prynne embellishes her scarlet letter and does not leave Boston; the feminine forces in Mobv-Dick defeat the monomanaical masculinity of Ahab; Miss Watson, the Widow Douglas, and Aunt Sally's threat of civilization chase Huck off to the territory despite the beckoning of the feminine river; Daisy retreats unscathed into her "white palace" after Gatsby's death; and Caddy tours Europe on the arm of a Nazi officer long after Quentin's suicide, Benjy's betrayal, and Jason's condemnation. -

Westbrook A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate School of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 1972 p © 1972 WAYNE WILLIAM WESTBROOK ALL RIGHTS RESERVED IH ABSTRACT Wall Street is construed to represent the American financial center, La Salle Street in Chicago, State StreetiinbBoston and Third Street in Philadelphia as well as New York's lower Manhattan district. The novels and stories considered are those in which the financial center serves a primary function, either in influencing plot, character or in providing the background and atmosphere for the main action, Both archetypal and textual analysis are applied in seeing the recurrent motifs in the novel of high finance, patterns and themes which are fully articulated and developed in the late nineteenth-century version, yet which are not found to bear an influence on later financial fiction. The reason for this is that the American literary artist has had a prejudicial view of high finance and speculation which is rooted in his cultural heritage of the Puritan opposition to playing or gaming as a way to wealth and success. The writer's attitude, therefore, is largely con demnatory, regarding an individual's involvement with the financial marketplace as a form of personal corruption, profligacy and degen eracy. Further, the idea of the sin and evil of Wall Street has as its probable historical source the volatile course that American finance has traced since the post-Civil War industrial age, in the highly cyclical and repetitive pattern of boom and bust periods. -
