DALEY MAYOR Chicago has long been noted for creative art and creative artists and the 1958 Chicago Artists Exhibition amounts to an impressive demonstration that our city main- tains its enviable position in this important field of endeavor. As Mayor, I share the pride of our people generally in the leadership which gives recognition to the great and varied talents of the many artists who live and create in Chicago. On behalf of the city, I am happy to join with the artists and the Art Institute of Chicago in giving support to this exhibition. The Art Institute, organizations of artists, clubs devoted to the stimulation of creative art, our galleries and the many schools and academies for the arts have all been interested in our community, as well as in individual, cultural growth and development and it is imperative to all who live in our city that this movement be maintained. RICHARD J. DALEY MAYOR - The tremendous success enjoyed by last year's No Jury exhibition encouraged its sponsors to undertake the 1958 Chicago Artists Exhibition . The exhibition was open to all artists residing in Illinois within a radius of 100 miles of Chi- cago. No work was rejected and ·all of the works submitted are on display. The exhibition is supported by the Art Institute and the leading art organizations of our city. Prizes totaling $7,450, contributed by the Art Institute, have been awarded by a distinguished jury of awards. The Art Institute will select its next annual Chicago and Vicinity Exhibition from the works on display. This year more than 2 100 artists are repre- sented by one work each. The exhibition, in terms of participating artists, is probably the largest ever to be held in this country. A departure from last year's No.Jury show is the selection of an unlimited number of meri- torious works by the jury. The works thus honored are designated by the color tabs on the frames and sculpture stands, The extraordinary response of Chicago aJ:tists to the invitation to exhibit dramatizes the great need of our artists to bring their work before the public, and is conclusive proof of the need for a permanent municipal art gallery where Chicago artists may exhibit their work on a continuing basis. I wish to thank Mayor Richard J. Daley for his interest in this exhibition and for his sympathetic understanding of the cultural needs of our city. I am grateful to the Art Institute, its Board of Trustees and staff, the distinguished group of ladies and gentlemen who served on our com- mittees, and the participating artists and art ARNOLD MAREMONT organizations who have made possible this splendid demonstration of art in our city.
