United, we can beat malaria.” 1. According to estimates by the Confederation of African Football © 2013 Johns Hopkins University • Center for Communication Programs. All rights reserved. South Africa: A UAM Case Study Over the past decade South Africa has made significant strides in controlling malaria. Malaria cases have been reduced by 85%, from 64,622 cases in the year 2000 to 9,866 cases in 2011.2 Deaths from malaria have also been reduced by 80%, from 458 to 89 for the same comparison years. Having achieved the Millennium Development Goal target for malaria, South Africa continues to pursue a malaria elimination agenda, targeting local malaria cases and sharpening its malaria surveillance sys- tems to identify hotspots for local transmission and implement preventative and curative strategies. In the 15 countries of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC), several challenges remain: the reintroduction of malaria through cross-border movement of infected persons, stock outs of essential malaria commodities, inadequate or bottlenecked funds, and poor data collection management.3 As the host of the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the 2013 Orange Africa Cup of Nations, South Africa has suc- cessfully raised the level of awareness about malaria prevention and treatment by harnessing the global popu- larity of football through the United Against Malaria partnership (UAM).

  • The Nigerian Music Industry: Making the Music Pay Through Intellectual Property by Solomon Nzere* [email protected]
The Nigerian Music Industry: Making the Music Pay through Intellectual Property by Solomon Nzere* [email protected] Industry Insight, January 2018 Image Source: Tush Magazine Overview of the Nigerian Music Industry Perhaps the inspiring history of Nigeria’s music industry is best told through Star Mega Jam, a mega music-performance concert which paraded international artistes like Shaggy, Usher, Akon, T-Pain, Ludacris, and other stars from its inception in 2000 to 2010. In the midst of this boisterous mega music concert, a quiet revolution was brewing. Sparks of this revolution came to fore in December 2004 when Eedris Abdulkareem, a Nigerian 1 rapper, protested the obvious disparity in the treatment given to foreign artistes over the local artistes at the concert. The protest exposed the lopsidedness in Nigeria’s young music industry. But today, it’s a different story. Since the Star Mega Jam concert, all that has had to be chronicled is the continued rise and rise of the Nigerian music industry which hit an undeniable high point in Wizkid’s sold-out performance at the Royal Albert Hall1. Nigerian artistes now headline shows without big foreign names and command the bulk of endorsements from companies. This growth has been captured in numbers with PwC reporting that revenue from music sales in Nigeria is estimated to grow to $86 million in 2019 from its value of $47 million in 2016, a growth fuelled largely by sales of ringtones and ringback tunes. This revenue growth in the music industry forms a major part of the total

Open markets, which invariably also impact on cultural industries, including the music sector, will either be a threat or an opportunity to grow our cultural industries exponentially because of the new patterns of production and distribution. Even though cultural goods and services are consumed all over the world, their production is still concentrated in specific regions of the world. There is, consequently, a highly skewed market with an asymmetric structure. But the global trends are irreversible. South Africa has a simple choice: we either adapt to that reality or learn how to create opportunities for ourselves within that environment; or we go under, to the accompaniment of loud protestations and bitter complaints ." Dr Pallo Jordan, Moshito, Johannesburg in 2005 To create global participation platforms for the South African cultural industry, particularly the music sector, in November 2008, the Department of Arts and Culture (“the DAC”), on behalf of the music sector, purchased the historic music recording business Downtown Studios and Fox Street Properties and created the Downtown Music Hub. The mandate of the Hub is to create access and economic opportunities for the music role players, develop musicians, establish state of the art recording, manufacturing and distribution facilities and realign the competitive advantage of the local music sector products in global markets.

PRESS RELEASE PARIS FEBRUARY 15, 2018 MEETING WITH THE QUEEN OF THE AFROPOP MUSIC INVITATION TO THE PRIVATE CONCERT OF YEMI ALADE WHERE IS JOHNNY? The song Johnny - a joyful, melodious and heady declaration to a fiancé who slips through her fingers – made its way to the top of the charts in several African countries and also in the United Kingdom. In 2016 Mama Africa: Diary of an African Woman, was the 4th album most listened on ITunes World album. Then, in December 2017, Yemi released Black Magic, magic. THE QUEEN OF THE AFROPOP – YEMI ALADE resembles her music: hectic, cheeky and powerful. Influenced by hip hop, R'n'B and Ragga. She smashes the established outline to reconcile all Afro trends and restore the essence of Naija Music (Nigerian music). When she doesn't perform her rhythmic and cheerful chant, she praises the merits of Nigeria, makes fun of our ignorance of the African continent with perspicacity, advocates rationality when it comes to conflict between religions. In turns called the Yoruba Igbo Girl (referring to her double ethnic background) or African Trendsetter, YEMI is a committed woman. France-loving, the artist loves the Parisian scene.
