Book Reviews 307 Pressly deserves praise for his accomplishment in pre- senting this survey of intellectual history, and for providing the student and general reader with a useful summary of the major literature of the Civil War. And, considering the world in which Pressly writes, it is a matter of moment to have this important reminder that honest men may differ in their interpretations of events. Earlham College Harold M. American historiography began with the Norse sagas but with the Spanish historians there began a chain of narration that links with our own day, and Richard Hakluyt was to write volumes about imperial expansion before the English began their colonization of America. With this introduction Michael Kraus takes up the historians of the first settle- ments-John Smith, William Bradford, John Winthrop, and on through the Mathers. The chapters that follow, in the main, proceed chronologically : The Era of Colonialism ; The Growing National Spirit: 1750-1800 ; Gathering the Records- Awaiting the National Historian ; Patriots, Romantics-and Hildreth; Francis Parkman; The Rise of the “Scientific School” ; Henry Adams ; The Nationalist School ; The Imperial School of Colonial History ; The Frontier and Sectional Histor- ians ; Biography ; and Contemporary Trends. In 1891 James Franklin Jameson published a sketch of American historical writing, carrying his study to the 1880’s. In 1917 John Spencer Bassett published his The Middle Group of American Historians, chiefly concerned with Sparks, Bancroft, and Peter Force. Not until 1937 when Michael Kraus published his A History of American History was any survey of the whole field of American historical writing available. -

In 1833, Massachusetts was the last state in the nation to “disestablish” taxation and state support for churches.1 What, if any, impact did John Adams have on this process of liberalization? What were Adams’ views on religious freedom and how did they change over time? In this intriguing article Dr. Arthur Scherr traces the evolution, or lack thereof, in Adams’ views on religious freedom from the writing of the original 1780 Massachusetts Constitution to its revision in 1820. He carefully examines contradictory primary and secondary sources and seeks to set the record straight, arguing that there are many unsupported myths and misconceptions about Adams’ role at the 1820 convention. -
Role of Emerson in Shaping Thoreau's Literary Career
ROLE OF EMERSON IN SHAPING THOREAU’S LITERARY CAREER N. ANKANNA Assistant Professor, Department of English, Yogi Vemana University, Kadapa (AP) INDIA Thoreau’s friendship with Emerson played a pivotal role in his life. Though Henry David Thoreau, fourteen years junior to Emerson, they would become close friends and their intimacy continued almost 25 years until his death. Emerson had already published Nature when Thoreau introduced it to Emerson. Emerson recognized his potential as a writer, although young Thoreau produced few immature poems. Without Emerson’s intellectual guidance and financial assistance Thoreau couldn’t have become one of the major writers in American Literature. Emerson influenced Thoreau towards Transcendentalism, very soon he became the most uncompromised and rugged transcendentalist. Later Emerson allowed him to construct a cabin near Walden Pond to experience and to teach the transcendental values. Emerson is the thinker Thoreau is the doer. Key Words: friendship, intellectual guidance and transcendental values . INTRODUCTION In 1837, Thoreau was introduced to Emerson and from that onwards they started meeting occasionally. Once Emerson had delivered ten lectures in Boston entitled „Human Culture,’ it was a revolutionary advice to the young minds of New England. He shared a pessimistic note on Calvinism and the Rationalism that suppressed the Unitarian thought. Emerson explained Kant's belief that man has innate knowledge to see beyond mere senses to arrive at truth, in other words to transcend it. Youth of New England was captivated by Emerson‟s message but no one tried to live up to the full extent of it except Thoreau, he took these words to heart. -

I'd suggest instead that UUs celebrate theological liberalism as a method rather than as a set of theological conclusions.” – Chris Walton, Editor UU World (in his blog “Philocrities”). “Christian Faith is the response to Jesus” not “getting back to the religion of Jesus.” The Trinity is part of that response as Jesus communities answer the question “How is God with us?” “When God is too close or too removed, humans take his place." Biblical Studies – historical critical method and the use of reason become the hallmark of anti-trinitarian theological method, yet many if not most of the Unitarian, Universalist and other “heretics” we encounter will use an “uncritical” approach to scripture in their justification for theological positions, even using “proof-texting” or citing scripture texts th uncritically to support their views, well into the 19 century. “Some of us UUs these days are just finding the Trinity a helpful metaphor and a window to God, however smudged.” – Rev. Tony Lorenzen Heresy/Hertics Heresy comes from a greek work meaning “to choose.” A heretic is someone who has not given up the right to choose what to think or what to believe. Ask the horseman, the dog fancier W and the horticulturalist, and you will find that a belief in heredity is the cardinal point of all their work. Among animals and plants nothing is more obvious than the general resemblance of off spring to parents and the stock from which they come. With the high est-priced Jersey, the blue ribbon horse or a prize-winning dog, goes al ways the pedigree as the essential guarantee of worth. So in the general bodily features of human beings, no one questions the great force of inheritance or is surprised because those close of kin look very much alike. Similarities in eyes, nose, mouth, complexion, gestures or physique are accepted as a matter of course, and we never stop to wonder at what is in reality one of the greatest of all mysteries, the substantial repetition of the same sort of beings generation after generation. If heredity does so much in moulding the physical form, may it not do as much in determining the shape and quality of the brain, in short, the mental and moral man in his highest manifesta tion of genius-indeed the ego itself? Here we find differences of opinion, for man usually thinks of him self as in part at least a spiritual being, free to act according to his own will, unsubject to the laws of matter. -

Classic Poetry Series James Russell Lowell - poems - Publication Date: 2012 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive James Russell Lowell(22 February 1819 – 12 August 1891) James Russell Lowell was an American Romantic poet, critic, editor, and diplomat. He is associated with the Fireside Poets, a group of New England writers who were among the first American poets who rivaled the popularity of British poets. These poets usually used conventional forms and meters in their poetry, making them suitable for families entertaining at their fireside. Lowell graduated from Harvard College in 1838, despite his reputation as a troublemaker, and went on to earn a law degree from Harvard Law School. He published his first collection of poetry in 1841 and married Maria White in 1844. He and his wife had several children, though only one survived past childhood. The couple soon became involved in the movement to abolish slavery, with Lowell using poetry to express his anti-slavery views and taking a job in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as the editor of an abolitionist newspaper. After moving back to Cambridge, Lowell was one of the founders of a journal called The Pioneer, which lasted only three issues. He gained notoriety in 1848 with the publication of A Fable for Critics, a book-length poem satirizing contemporary critics and poets. The same year, he published The Biglow Papers, which increased his fame. He would publish several other poetry collections and essay collections throughout his literary career. Maria White died in 1853, and Lowell accepted a professorship of languages at Harvard in 1854. -

The Emerson Circle of the Unitarian Society of Ridgewood Cordially invites you to a talk by Award-winning author Megan Marshall Margaret Fuller and the Peabody Sisters: The Origins of an American Women’s Movement in Unitarian-Transcendentalism A Talk by Megan Marshall Thursday, February 12th at 7:00pm We tend to think of American feminism beginning with the suffrage movement, but where did those ideas come from? New England women provided an overlooked impetus in a groundswell of “Conversation” and writing provoked by the questioning era of 1840s Transcendentalism. In fact, Margaret Fuller’s Woman in the Nineteenth Century (1853) not only set the stage for activism in its own time, it anticipated 20th- and 21st-century critiques of “socially constructed” gender roles for both women and men. Male and female “are perpetually passing into one another,” Fuller wrote, “there is no wholly masculine man, no purely feminine woman”—a statement that was shocking in its time and still reverberates today. Award-winning author Megan Marshall will discuss her two prize-winning biographies, her research and fascination with these founders of American feminism whose network of friends (and husbands!) included Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Horace Mann. Megan Marshall is the author of Margaret Fuller: A New American Life, winner of the 2014 Pulitzer Prize in Biography, and The Peabody Sisters: Three Women Who Ignited American Romanticism, winner of the Francis Parkman Prize, the Mark Lynton History Prize, and finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2006. She is currently the Gilder Lehrman Fellow at the Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers of the New York Public Library, and has held fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University. -

FEATURES THEME AND SUBJECT MATTER In Francis Parkman’s The Old Régime in Canada IntroductIon Edgardo Medeiros da Silva University of Lisbon This paper examines the failure of France to establish the basis Portugal of a well-regulated political community in North America as conveyed by the American historian Francis Parkman in Part Four of his History of France and England in North America, entitled The Old Régime in Canada (1874). Parkman’s choice of theme and subject matter for his History points to differences between the English and French settlements, which portray, as has been suggested, ‘the struggle between France and England as a heroic contest between rival civilizations with wilderness as a modifying force’ (Jacobs, 2001: 582). This struggle and these differences reflect a deep-seated cultural and political bias against colonial France on the part of New Eng- land historians that stretch as far back as Joseph Dennie’s Portfolio and Edmund Burke’s Reflections on the Revolution in France (1790). It is my contention that Part Four of Parkman’s History, informed by the ‘Teutonic germ’ commonly associated with the historiog- raphy of New England’s nineteenth-century Romantic or literary historians, provides us with an account of the colonization of New France which sheds some light on the colonial beginnings of New England as well. Not infrequently, in fact, Parkman’s historical nar- rative on New France is juxtaposed with that of New England, one providing a sort of backdrop for the cultural and political make-up of the other. The son of a Unitarian minister, Francis Parkman (1823–1893) was born in Boston, Massachusetts. -

EMERSON’S HIDDEN INFLUENCE: WHAT CAN SPINOZA TELL THE BOY? by ADAM ADLER Under the Direction of Reiner Smolinski and Melissa Merritt ABSTRACT Scholarship on Emerson to date has not considered Spinoza’s influence upon his thought. Indeed, from his lifetime until the twentieth century, Emerson’s friends and disciples engaged in a concerted cover-up because of Spinoza’s hated name. However, Emerson mentioned his respect and admiration of Spinoza in his journals, letters, lectures, and essays, and Emerson’s thought clearly shows an importation of ideas central to Spinoza’s system of metaphysics, ethics, and biblical hermeneutics. In this essay, I undertake a biographical and philosophical study in order to show the extent of Spinoza’s influence on Emerson and
