It took 7 years of labor, slowly clawing shovels of earth from the ground in a 363-mile trek across the wilderness of New York State. Through the use of many references, this paper attempts to describe this remarkable construction project. ANDERTON BOAT LIFT TO NATIONAL WATERWAYS MUSEUM,ELLESMERE PORT - CRUISE DURATION APPROX 6 HOURS Our cruise departs from our berth below the Anderton Boat Lift, also known as ‘The Cathedral of the Canals’. This magnificent structure was built in 1875 to elevate narrow boats, laden with cargo, 50ft between the River Weaver and The Trent & Mersey Canal. The lift was designed by the River Weaver trustees chief engineer Edward Leader Williams with Edwin Clark as the principal designer. The structure is designated as a scheduled monument and is included in the National Heritage list for England. Today it is an award-winning visitor destination offering leisure boaters a link between the two waterways and an informative visitor centre, café and children’s play area. Anderton Basin is a reminder of the Weaver’s industrial past when barges and ocean-going ships lined the berths loading and unloading cargo, predominantly for the chemical industry. Although the Tatter Chemical Plant is still operational, the last commercial cargo ship to use the river was The Saint Keiran back in 1998. Within 10 minutes of starting the journey from the lift we will pass through Winnington Swing Bridge which is the smallest of the river’s five swing bridges, and as soon as you pass through the bridge look out in the undergrowth for what looks like an old dry dock, but is actually an ice weir built to remove large floating chunks of ice from the river to keep it clear for traffic in the days when the river used to regularly freeze over. -

The Broadheath Canal Warehouse is Grade II listed. It has been allowed to deteriorate to the point where unless remedial action is taken it may become lost for ever. It is our heritage and if we want future generation to understand and be in touch their history, action is required. The Bridgewater Canal was the first contour canals built in the Britain necessitating not a single lock throughout its 39½ mile length. The initial length of the canal, Worsley to Castlefield, was opened in 1761 with permission to build the extension from Stretford to Broadheath allowing that section to open in 1767. The further extension through to Runcorn was opened in 1769 allowing the link up with the Trent and Mersey Canal at Preston Brook. The Duke of Bridgewater had been smart enough to also purchase the land at Broadheath where the turnpike road from Chester to Manchester would cross the canal. Here he established many wharfs along the canal bank to handle goods going into Manchester, principally vegetables from the new market gardens which sprang up around Broadheath. On the return journey the boats brought back coal from the Duke’s mines in Worsley which was used to heat local homes and power small industries. The wharfs at Broadheath handled timber, sand, slates, bricks, limestone to make mortar, raw cotton and flax, and finished good. -

NEIGHBOURHOOD MANAGEMENT & AREA WORKING PROGRAMMES This document provides the breakdown of Neighbourhood Management and Area working funding over the past 6 years. The funding was allocated originally in 2-year programmes, and more recently as 1-year programme. The Neighbourhood Management programmes were coordinated and managed by Bolton Council (BMBC) and Bolton at Home (for Breightmet, Tonge with the Haulgh, Hulton Lane, Washacre and Johnson Fold). Members have discretion to shape priorities and spend within their areas but have been guided by the principles that projects should help to improve outcomes and narrow the gap between our least deprived and most deprived areas, and have a clear benefit to the quality of life in an area. The Council is publishing this historical information as part of its commitment to transparency; and has undertaken to publish information about new allocations on a regular basis. Chapter 6: James and Wainwright Bellhouse Ltd., Cotton Spinners
CHAPTER 6 JAMES AND WAINWRIGHT BELLHOUSE LTD. COTTON SPINNERS The business venture started by David Bellhouse (1764 – 1840) that seems least related to the rest is cotton spinning. This business was passed to his sons, James (1796 – 1874) and Wainwright Bellhouse (1800 – 1885), about a decade before the father’s death. By 1833, David Bellhouse had ceased to list himself as a cotton spinner in the Manchester directories. Wain- wright Bellhouse first appeared in the Manchester directories in 1832 with his occupation given as cotton spinner; James Bellhouse followed in 1836. The firm was know as Messrs. Bellhouse by 18311 and as James and Wainwright (J. & W.) Bellhouse by 1833.2 Advertisement for the Medlock New Mill3 129 The traditional date for the start of J. & W. Bellhouse is 1792.4 However, this is the year in which David Bellhouse senior took up residence in Faulkner Street and began to work inde- pendently as a joiner and builder, not the year the spinning business started. David Bellhouse built the original mill, associated with the firm known as the Medlock New Mill, in 1806 and so the beginning of the firm should be dated from that year. The mill was just outside the boundary of the Township of Manchester as defined in 1800.5 It was bounded by the Medlock River and by Pritchard, York and Charles Streets in Chorlton on Medlock or Chorlton Row. The mill was situated directly across the Medlock River from all the other Bellhouse enterprises, which were in Hunt or Whitworth Street. David Bellhouse senior built a second mill at this location in 1836.6 Sometime before 1851 a third mill was added. -

ABSTRACT This thesis explores the ways in which the industrialist Matthew Boulton (1728-1809) used images of his manufactory and of himself to help develop what would now be considered a ‘brand’. The argument draws heavily on archival research into the commissioning process, authorship and reception of these depictions. Such information is rarely available when studying prints and allows consideration of these images in a new light but also contributes to a wider debate on British eighteenth-century print culture. The first chapter argues that Boulton used images to convey messages about the output of his businesses, to draw together a diverse range of products and associate them with one site. Chapter two explores the setting of the manufactory and the surrounding estate, outlining Boulton’s motivation for creating the parkland and considering the ways in which it was depicted.
