David Johnson begins his third season with the U.S. Air Force Academy as assistant rifle coach. Before coming to the Academy, he was the interim executive officer at USA Shooting, Director of Operations, and National Rifle Coach. Johnson was USA Shooting’s National Rifle Team Coach from 2002 to 2012. During that time, he helped the team earn five Olympic medals in the 2004, 2008, and 2012 Olympic Games, along with several open and junior World Championship titles.

Johnson began shooting in 1972 at the Langley Junior Rifle Club in Virginia, and continued behind the firing line through his high school graduation in 1982. Dedicated to education, he attended West Virginia University, where he earned his bachelor of science in finance in 1986. After graduation, Johnson was commissioned in the U.S. Army Reserves as an Infantry Officer. His military career included a two-year assignment to the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit and as a coach in the Army’s World Class Athlete Program.

As assistant coach, he brings a multitude of experience as an athlete and coach with him. During Johnson’s career as a rifle athlete, he was a multiple Pan American Games and World Cup medalist, a USA National Champion, and COACHING AND ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENTS 1983 NCAA Individual Champion. Johnson helped lead his WVU rifle team 2004, 2008, 2012 (5 medals) to three National Championships. In December 2018, while at the two-day Winter Air Gun Championships, Casper Schadler earned a third-place ranking in the men’s junior air rifle. On Day 2, Logan Ogden won the bronze medal for the same event. At the 2019 National Junior Olympic Shooting Championships, sophomore Nate Peterson earned a bronze medal for his accomplishment in the 10m Men’s Air Rifle. In the 50m Three-Postion Rifle, Peter Fiori won the championship title. Both qualified for the ISSF World Cup in Suhl, Germany.

The Air Force Academy athletic program and rifl e team opened the Falcon Rifl e Range in February 2014. The Falcons moved into the state-of-the-art facility following a year-long construction and renovation, with the fi nal completion of the facility in January 2014 in time to host the Nevada rifl e team on Feb. 1.

Renovations to the range included 16 points, all equipped with the most advanced Megalink electronic target system. The backstop is made of granulated rubber, which helps to reduce noise and lead- dust contamination. The old range consisted of 10 points, and with the addition of six points allow Air Force to host the NCAA Rifl e Championships in the future.

The range features a viewing area of the entire fi ring line. Positioned directly above the viewing area are two TV screens, which display the athletes’ targets and their scores. Spectators are able to follow the action during the competition. The team room is also available for spectators to relax and watch the competition on two 60” plasma TVs. Fire on the range The facility accommodates the coaches’ offi ce, gun-smithing room, an armory, and separate male and female locker rooms.

NCAA college rifl e was founded in 1980. Prior to NCAA sponsorship in 1980, a collegiate rifl e championship was held yearly by the National Rifl e Asso- ciation. From 1980 to 2004, the championship consisted of 120 shots by each competitor in smallbore, and 40 shots per competitor in air rifl e. Since 2005, the championship has consisted of 60 shots for both smallbore and air rifl e, equaling a total of 120 shots per team member. In 2014, Meredith Carpentier, air rifl e, fi nished 13th with 588 points. She was the only AFA qualifi er for the NCAA Championships. The team’s 2016 national fi nish (fourth) was the school’s highest national ranking since 2012 (water polo fi nished fourth). In 2019, the rifl e team won the national Air Rifl e championship title and the team fi nished third overall in the nation. The rifl e team became the only Academy team ever to win a Division I national title.

In February, the sixth-ranked Falcons got ready for Patriot Rifl e Conference Championships in Fort Worth, Texas. On Feb. 14, Air Force defeated Alaska, 4666 to 4622 at the TCU Rifl e Range. On Feb. 15, conference opponents TCU, Air Force, Ohio State, Alas- ka and UTEP took to the line for shoulder-to-shoulder competition in smallbore and air rifl e. TCU swept the smallbore champion- ships with a leading score of 2340. Air Force had the second-best score of 2314, followed by the Buckeyes’ 2310, Nanooks’ 2296, and UTEP’s 2264. The following day was the air rifl e team championships. Air Force had a strong showing in the match, but TCU had a 21-point lead on the Falcons and went on to win the match with 2388 points. The Falcons followed with 2367 points, the Buckeyes had a 2359, Nanooks had a 2343, and UTEP fi nished with 2319 points.

Following two-days of championship shooting, Air Force fi nished second in the conference with a 4681. TCU was the PRC team champions with a score of 4728, and OSU fi nished third with a 4669, Alaska was fourth with a 4639 and UTEP fi nished fi fth with a 4583.

Conference leaders: The Falcons’ Peter Fiori was the smallbore runner up and advanced Patriot Rifl e Conference to the championship fi nals with a score of 584.
