Introduction in Their Thirty Years Together, the Grateful Dead Forever
Introduction In their thirty years together, the Grateful Dead forever altered the way in which popular music is performed, recorded, heard, marketed, and shared. Founding members Jerry Garcia, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, and Bob Weir took the name Grateful Dead in 1965, after incarnations as Mother McCree’s Uptown Jug Champions and The Warlocks. Despite significant changes in the band’s lineup, including the addition of Mickey Hart and the death of Ron McKernan, the band played together until Jerry Garcia’s death in 1995. From the beginning, the Grateful Dead distinguished themselves by their preference for live performance, musical and business creativity, and an unprecedented dedication to their fans. Working musicians rather than rock stars, the Dead developed a distinctive sound while performing as latter-day American troubadours, bringing audio precision to their live performances and the spontaneity of live performances to their studio work. Side-stepping the established rules of the recording industry, the Dead took control of the production and distribution of their music. With a similar business savvy, they introduced strategic marketing innovations that strengthened the bond with their fans. This exhibition, the first extensive presentation of materials from the Grateful Dead Archive housed at the University of California, Santa Cruz, testifies to the enduring impact of the Grateful Dead and provides a glimpse into the social upheavals and awakenings of the late twentieth century—a transformative period that profoundly shaped our present cultural landscape. Milby 2006 ABSTRACT Soccer playing style has not been addressed in detail in the academic literature, as playing style has often been dismissed as the aesthetic element of the game. Brief mention of playing style is considered when discussing national identity and gender. Through a literature research methodology and detailed study of game situations, this dissertation addresses a definitive definition of playing style and details the cultural elements that influence it. A case study analysis of German and Brazilian soccer exemplifies how cultural elements shape, influence, and intersect with playing style. Eight signature elements of playing style are determined: tactics, technique, body image, concept of soccer, values, tradition, ecological and a miscellaneous category. Each of these elements is then extrapolated for Germany and Brazil, setting up a comparative binary. Literature analysis further reinforces this contrasting comparison. Both history of the country and the sport history of the country are necessary determinants when considering style, as style must be historically situated when being discussed in order to avoid stereotypification. Historic time lines of significant German and Brazilian style changes are determined and interpretated.

The Strange Commodity of Cultural Exchange: Martha Graham and the State Department on Tour, 1955-1987 Lucy Victoria Phillips Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 Lucy Victoria Phillips All rights reserved ABSTRACT The Strange Commodity of Cultural Exchange: Martha Graham and the State Department on Tour, 1955-1987 Lucy Victoria Phillips The study of Martha Graham's State Department tours and her modern dance demonstrates that between 1955 and 1987 a series of Cold Wars required a steady product that could meet "informational" propaganda needs over time. After World War II, dance critics mitigated the prewar influence of the German and Japanese modernist artists to create a freed and humanist language because modern dance could only emerge from a nation that was free, and not from totalitarian regimes. Thus the modern dance became American, while at the same time it represented a universal man. During the Cold War, the aging of Martha Graham's dance, from innovative and daring to traditional and even old-fashioned, mirrored the nation's transition from a newcomer that advertised itself as the postwar home of freedom, modernity, and Western civilization to an established power that attempted to set international standards of diplomacy. Graham and her works, read as texts alongside State Department country plans, United States Information Agency publicity, other documentary evidence, and oral histories, reveal a complex matrix of relationships between government agencies and the artists they supported, as well as foundations, private individuals, corporations, country governments, and representatives of business and culture.

SONG OF THE DAY LXXXIII Today, like in SOTD LXXIX, we are going to examine two songs, and, just like that previous SOTD, I‟m certain this one will rankle some feathers as well. Today‟s song originally was released on Led Zeppelin‟s debut album, side two, track two, clocking in at just 2:12; the beautiful and eerie “Black Mountain Side.” It was also issued on “Box Set I” as “White Summer/Black Mountain Side,” and that one clocked in at 8:01. So, either grab your copy of “Zep I,” or disc one of “Box Set” one, as we take a look inside Jimmy‟s instrumental showpiece for much of his touring career. Before we dive into these two numbers, one thing must be addressed; Jimmy did not write either of these songs. Despite what the credits say on “Led Zeppelin I” or “Box Set” one, both of these songs were traditional Irish folk songs. “Black Mountain Side” was originally known as “Down By Blackwaterside” and later became known simply as “Black Waterside” when guitar legend Bert Jansch recorded it on his 1966 album, “Jack Orion.” On that album, Jansch listed the credit as “traditional.” “White Summer” was recorded and released in 1962 by Davey Graham, another great British guitarist, under the title that it had long been known as; “She Moved Through The Fair.” In fact, not only did Graham record a version that mirrors “White Summer” almost to a T, but it was Graham who invented the tuning that both of these songs are in; D-A-D-G-A-D.
