Orí (Head) as an Expression of Yorùbá Aesthetic Philosophy Olusegun Ajíbóyè Stephen Fọlárànmí Nanashaitu Umoru-Ọ̀ kẹ Department of Fine and Applied Arts, Obafemi Awólọ́ wọ University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria Doi: 10.2478/mjss-2018-0115 Abstract Aesthetics was never a subject or a separate philosophy in the traditional philosophies of black Africa. This is however not a justification to conclude that it is nonexistent. Indeed, aesthetics is a day to day affair among Africans. There are criteria for aesthetic judgment among African societies which vary from one society to the other. The Yorùbá of Southwestern Nigeria are not different. This study sets out to examine how the Yorùbá make their aesthetic judgments and demonstrate their aesthetic philosophy in decorating their orí, which means head among the Yorùbá. The head receives special aesthetic attention because of its spiritual and biological importance. It is an expression of the practicalities of Yorùbá aesthetic values. Literature and field work has been of paramount aid to this study. The study uses photographs, works of art and visual illustrations to show the various ways the head is adorned and cared for among the Yoruba. It relied on Yoruba art and language as a tool of investigating the concept of ori and aesthetics. Yorùbá aesthetic values are practically demonstrable and deeply located in the Yorùbá societal, moral and ethical idealisms. -

“YORUBA’S DON’T DO GENDER”: A CRITICAL REVIEW OF OYERONKE OYEWUMI’s The Invention of Women: Making an African Sense of Western Gender Discourses By Bibi Bakare-Yusuf Discourses on Africa, especially those refracted through the prism of developmentalism, promote gender analysis as indispensable to the economic and political development of the African future. Conferences, books, policies, capital, energy and careers have been made in its name. Despite this, there has been very little interrogation of the concept in terms of its relevance and applicability to the African situation. Instead, gender functions as a given: it is taken to be a cross-cultural organising principle. Recently, some African scholars have begun to question the explanatory power of gender in African societies.1 This challenge came out of the desire to produce concepts grounded in African thought and everyday lived realities. These scholars hope that by focusing on an African episteme they will avoid any dependency on European theoretical paradigms and therefore eschew what Babalola Olabiyi Yai (1999) has called “dubious universals” and “intransitive discourses”. Some of the key questions that have been raised include: can gender, or indeed patriarchy, be applied to non- Euro-American cultures? Can we assume that social relations in all societies are organised around biological sex difference? Is the male body in African societies seen as normative and therefore a conduit for the exercise of power? Is the female body inherently subordinate to the male body? What are -

Owoseni Department of Philosophy, University of Ibadan, University of Ibadan Post Office, Nigeria Abstract The observation by scholars that the typical African people are often overtly religious in matters of interpreting reality demands a critical outlook with allusion to apt consideration of phenomena in relevant locale within the African space. The phenomenon of water has received copious attention worldwide and the need to consider this within an African nay Yoruba worldview is timely. The Yoruba of Southwestern Nigeria are wont to express that ‘water is the converge of good health, no one can despise it’ – omi labuwe, omi labumi, eni kan kii ba omi s’oota . This expression among other narratives convey a symbolic and paradoxical representation of water, which depicts the metaphysical dialectics of water in Yoruba belief. Basically, it renders the phenomenon of water as an entity that has the potency to vitalize and disrupt life-forms, given the beliefs regarding its place in relationship with certain animals like buffalo, fish and some endangered species, plants, trees as well as humans. Resultant impediments that fraught environmental order such as flood, draught and water borne diseases or outbreak in this regard are often linked to these beliefs. This is believed to be due to negating demands of the essential place of water by aberrant practices/acts, abuse, negligence of venerating ancestral grooves, goddesses or spirit. In lieu of this, this discourse adopts a hermeneutic analysis of the phenomenon and argues that the understanding of water in indigenous Yoruba belief is underscored by the dialectics of positive and negative causes that also impact the course of environmental sustainability. -
The Osun Drainage Basin in the Western Lithoral Hydrological Zone of Nigeria: a Morphometric Study

This study takes a closer look at the Osun drainage basin with a view to updating the existing records, estimate the morphometric features and make hydrological inferences. The data used in this study include a 30m resolution Digital Elevation Model (DEM) acquired from the United State Geological Survey (USGS), geology map of Nigeria acquired from Nigeria Geological Survey Agency (NGSA), Harmonized World Soil Database (HWSD) prepared by the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), and the 1991 locality population data of Nigeria acquired from National Population Commission (NPC). Remote sensing and GIS techniques were adopted in the analysis of the data using ArcGIS 10.2. The acquired DEM was used to delineate Osun drainage basin and 21 morphometric parameters were estimated. The results revealed that Osun drainage basin is a 4th order drainage basin, with an area of 9926.22km 2 , and a length of 213.08km. The area covered by the two geology types and the four soil types were quantified and it revealed that 93.28% of the basin is underlain by the Basement Complex rocks, while 50.89% of the basin is covered by sandy clay loam soil. -

Santería: from Slavery to Slavery
Santería: From Slavery to Slavery Kent Philpott This, my second essay on Santería, is necessitated for two reasons. One, requests came in for more information about the religion; and two, responses to the first essay indicated strong disagreement with my views. I will admit that my exposure to Santería,1 at that point, was not as thorough as was needed. Now, however, I am relying on a number of books about the religion, all written by decided proponents, plus personal discussions with a broad spectrum of people. In addition, I have had more time to process what I learned about Santería as I interacted with the following sources: (1) Santería the Religion,by Migene Gonzalez-Wippler, (2) Santería: African Spirits in America,by Joseph M. Murphy, (3) Santería: The Beliefs and Rituals of a Growing Religion in America, by Miguel A. De La Torre, (4) Yoruba-Speaking Peoples, by A. B. Ellis, (5) Kingdoms of the Yoruba, 3rd ed., by Robert S. Smith, (6) The Good The Bad and The Beautiful: Discourse about Values in Yoruba Culture, by Barry Hallen, and (7) many articles that came up in a Google search on the term "Santería,” from varying points of view. My title for the essay, "From Slavery to Slavery," did not come easily. I hope to be as accepting and tolerant of other belief systems as I can be. However, the conviction I retained after my research was one I knew would not be appreciated by those who identified with Santería. Santería promises its adherents freedom but succeeds only in bringing them into a kind of spiritual, emotional, and mental bondage that is as devastating as the slavery that originally brought West Africans to the New World in the first place. -

The Yoruba understanding expressed through belief in Ori as a potent vehicle through which man confronts life draws attention to this reality. Drama has also functioned in underlining this fact. The paper engages this Yoruba ritual concept and makes a case for an authentic Yoruba (African) value by exploring this aspect of the people’s ritual, through an exploration of Wole Soyinka’s Death and the King’s Horseman. By examining the character of Elesin Oba and his son, Olunde, showing how each comes to the understanding and the crucial perception of their individual Ori, and the exploration of their iwa, the paper shows the essential place of that aspect of the people’s belief in their lives and worldview. Introduction In the introduction to the essay, “Prayers to the Orisha: a look at Santeria”, Elizabeth Caudillo asks “Who owns your head?”(2)[1].This is one of the most significant ontological questions, which the Yoruba worldview concerns itself with and, indeed, provides an answer to. Ori is made up of the prefix “o” that stands for the individual, male/female and the suffix “ri” which means “to perceive” and both freely translate as “seat of perception”, or in Western theological term, “seat of consciousness”, or in Taoism, the “unknowable I” at the centre of self-awareness”(Awo Fatunmbi, 45)[2]. -

1 The Story So Far: Plot Summaries of The Brother/Sister Plays Marcus; or The Secret of Sweet is part three of a series of stories called The Brother/Sister Plays. You might find it helpful to read these summaries as the shows are interconnected, but know that there are spoilers! In The Red and Brown Water Oya is fast runner—beautiful to watch on the track, and on the verge of womanhood. The neighbor boy Elegba warns her mother that he has been having vivid dreams about her floating in water, bleeding. At her track meet, Oya meets the Man from State, who offers her a scholarship. She asks for the chance to go discuss it with her mother, Mama Moja. At home, Oya is visited by kind, stuttering Ogun, who seems to have a crush on her, but the arrival of another man, smooth, sexy Shango, sends him off. Mama Moja does not approve of Shango for her daughter and chases him away. Mama Moja is feeling that her time is short, so she is reluctant to let her daughter take the scholarship. Oya passes on the scholarship to stay with her Mama, who dies. Shango comes to offer his condolences, and with no Mama Moja to chase him off, he stays. Shango’s relationship with Oya is tempestuous. When Ogun’s aunt/Oya’s godmother Elegua visits she reminds Oya that education should come first. But the scholarship isn’t available any more. Shango joins the army and leaves. Ogun returns to Oya, offering her his love and one day, a family. -

FRIENDSHIP AND BETRAYAL: A NARRATIVE READING OF MATTHEW 26: 47-56 IN THE LIGHT OF THE CONCEPT OF OREODALE OF THE YORUBA PEOPLE IN NIGERIA. A THESIS SUBMITTED IN FULFILMENT OF ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS FOR THE AWARD OF THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN BIBLICAL STUDIES IN THE SCHOOL OF RELIGION, PHILOSOPHY AND CLASSICS, UNIVERSITY OF KWAZULU-NATAL, PIETERMARITZBURG, SOUTH AFRICA. BY SAMUEL ADEKUNLE OLA OSUNGBEJU 1 ABSTRACT The theme of friendship and betrayal cuts across many disciplines and cultures. This research focuses on the theme of friendship which is fundamentally related to the theme of the church (Matt.16, 18) and love as contained in the Sermon on the Mount (Matt.5-7), and is clearly expressed in Matthew 5:23-26 and 7:12. This theme rings through in Matthew’s Gospel as a narrative or story. This then forms the background to our search for a new understanding of the theme of friendship and betrayal in the Matthean Gospel with a focus on Matt.26:47-56 in light of the socio-cultural perspective of the Yoruba people in Nigeria. Friendship cuts across different societies with its diverse cultural distinctiveness. We find in the Matthean community, a model of friendship as exemplified by Jesus with his disciples as well as with the people of his day that is informed by love, mutual trust, loyalty, commitment, forgiveness, and which revolves around discipleship and equality. Although Jesus took on the role of a servant and friend with his disciples he remained the leader of the group. But his disciples abandoned him at the very critical point of his life with Peter even publicly denying knowing him.
