Prayer Principal’s Message

As I go to work, Dear Parents and Friends,

Be with me Lord. As always, it has been a busy week but we celebrate the busyness of Be the patience when I'm frustrated. Killester life as our students are forever working hard in their classes and being actively involved in the wide range of extra-curricular activities Be the endurance when I am tired. on offer. We congratulate the Aerobics teams for their success in the Division 1 SCSA competition. The Year 10 students enjoyed their Personal Be the wisdom when I am uncertain. Development Day focusing on responsible decision making. Plans Be the inspiration when I'm out of ideas. are well and truly in full swing for Brigidine Day, which will be held on August 24. Our Student Committees are working hard and excitedly Be the peacemaker when I feel hurt. preparing for "KILLESTER GOES TO HOLLYWOOD" which is this year's theme. Brigidine Day is always a fun day for our school community but, Be the comforter when I feel more importantly, it is a day where we all come together to reflect on our overwhelmed. Brigidine mission and heritage, and raise funds for our chosen charities - The Cyrene Centre, the Brigidine Asylum Seekers Network and the Village Be the energy when I am weary. School Project.

Be the guide when I am confused. This Thursday we had a student free day, which gave Killester staff the Be the forgiver when I get it wrong. opportunity to attend an inspiring day to hear the wise words and reflections of Father Timothy Radcliffe - a Dominican Priest who is visiting Be with me Lord, today. and speaking at many Catholic schools. This event was held at Kilbreda College with Kilbreda and De La Salle staff.

Father Radcliffe spoke about the Catholic Church today and our role as teachers in Catholic schools. Father Radcliffe was a very engaging speaker, offering valuable guidance and sharing with us stories of his work and experiences. He touched on a number of issues that are challenging the Catholic Church today, focusing on the HOPE we, as teachers, can nurture in our school communities. Some of the key statements he made included: How do we teach our students to hope? How do we manage to hope and keep joy alive when we live in a globalised world of superficiality? Father Radcliffe stated that we need to move our youth beyond populism and encourage them to value difference and debate. The art of listening, understanding and looking deeply into the faces of our students can help us to focus on the concerns of our students, whether these be personal challenges, family issues, stresses about their future or big picture global concerns relating to social justice. Our mission and daily work was reinforced by the words of Father Radcliffe and gives us all the energy to continue the work we do with our students at Killester.

Thanks to Kilbreda College for hosting this wonderful event.

Hope - Living with Purpose SCSA Aerobics

On Tuesday 8th August four very keen and excited teams went off to Star of the Sea to compete in the Aerobics competition. The nerves set in when we arrived and saw the nine other schools practicing their routines. The atmosphere was very exciting and the girls were keen to perform. The four teams had been training extremely hard and their hard work and dedication paid off with all teams performing beautifully. We came away with three medals, which was an amazing result. Each team’s results are listed below.

Congratulations to all the girls who were involved, your energy and enthusiasm shone through on stage and the results you achieved were very well deserved!!

Year 10 Professional Development Day

On Wednesday the 8th of August it was our Year 10 PD day. The Personal Development Day was fantastic; full of excitement, laughter and many things were learnt. It was also a day were lots of converstation and teamwork developed between Homerooms. To start PD day off we came to school in comfy casual clothes because it's a day full of activities and moving around.

The first lovely guest speaker we had was Sacha Kaluri. Sacha Kaluri is a motivational speaker, TV Host and radio broadcast announcer. The first thing that we did was play a small game. It was very simple, yet fun. We had to guess the name and artist of the song that she played for 30 seconds. After the game, she jumped straight into a conversation about careers and how she became who she is today. Sacha talked about the many different ways that could help us find what we really want to do in the future. Sacha not only talked about her achievements but, most importantly, she talked about the many failures she had to go through in order to achieve everything that she has today. Listening to her story definitely made everyone think of the many pathways and risks that you have to take, even though you may not want to. Throughout the session, everyone was very entertained because she was very humorous and easy to relate to. There were so many things that I am sure everyone picked up and will remember forever. After listening to Sacha's story I felt really inspired, it gave me a sense that no matter what happens in the future everything will work out to be fine.

After recess we went into our Homeroom groups and started to role play various scenarios. The role plays focused on traits such as honesty, courage, responsiblity and trust. Our wonderful Homeroom teachers even joined in!

After lunch, we went back to the theatrette because it was time for our second guest speaker who was, coincidentally, Sacha’s best friend. Her name was Sonya Karras and she was also a motivational speaker. She talked all about what we had to know about partying safely. She talked about drugs and how much they can really affect our bodies and the consequences of drinking alcohol. Sonya told us a very personal story of her best friend, Sacha, and it made everyone very emotional. Our Year 10 PD day was definitely a success because everyone enjoyed their time and many new things were learnt in a friendly atmosphere.

10 August 2018

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Over the next five weeks building works are taking place behind Springvale Library. Part of this work involves removing any material in the ground which has the potential to include asbestos. We have been assured that a safety plan has been implemented to ensure no asbestos escapes to nearby houses or further afield to Killester College. Further, an independent company has been engaged to monitor air quality. Work does not happen on the windy days, such as today. Given this, the advice is that the area around Springvale Library is safe for residents and ourselves.

If you have any questions please ring Dandenong City Council on 8571 1000.

Thank you to those parents who contacted us today and brought this issue to our attention.

Yours sincerely
