The manufacture and sale of lime at this site was conducted from 1864 to 190?. The lime industry can be traced back^as far as 1830 in the Washington area, and William H. Godey started his lime business in another location in about 1858 and moved to the present kilns in 1§6U; the address was then known as 27th and L Streets, N.W. Godey was in partnership with John A. Rheim in 1865 Z and 1866 , and then he was on his own until his death in 1873 After o Godey's death his family continued to operate the kilns. In 189? the business was taken over by John McL. Dodson who operated the kilns u until 1907? when the kilns were closed. Z) Qi Today, the Godey Lime Kilns are in a atate of partial restoration,this I- work having been completed by January 1, 1967. Final Environmental Assessment West Heating Plant Disposal Washington, DC December 2012 U.S. General Services Administration Public Buildings Service, National Capital Region 301 7th Street, SW Washington, DC 20407 Abstract The United States (U.S.) General Services Administration (GSA), National Capital Region, has prepared this Environmental Assessment (EA) for the proposed disposal of the West Heating Plant parcel (approximately 2.08 acres), located in the west Georgetown area of Washington, District of Columbia (DC or District). The parcel contains a decommissioned heating plant that was previously used to produce steam to heat Federal buildings in the District, as well as associated infrastructure. While the proposed action is the disposal of the property, this EA also analyzes the indirect impacts from a reasonably foreseeable development scenario on the parcel once GSA disposes of the property. For the purposes of impacts analysis in the EA, it is assumed that any redevelopment would be consistent with surrounding land use zoning, W-2 Waterfront District, Medium Density (Mixed Use).

Norris and constructed in 1904-1905. The 1908 addition, designed by Municipal Architect Snowden Ashford, is complementary in its design to the original high-style Colonial Revival building. The school was attended by students in the neighborhoods of LeDroit Park, Bloomingdale, and Eckington and served as an important community meeting and recreation venue. Built 1904; Lemuel Norris, architect; DC designation October 26, 2004, NR listing November 19, 2008; DC ownership Joseph Gales School 65 Massachusetts Avenue, NW This twelve-room schoolhouse is one of few buildings to survive from Swampoodle, the old largely Irish and Italian working-class neighborhood around the Government Printing Office. Erected in 1881, it is the product of an effort to develop an improved prototype for local schools—at the direction of Congress, the design was by the Architect of the Capitol, Edward Clark. Gales School still commands a prominent site near Union Station. The austere Romanesque Revival building is faced in pressed brick, with molded beltcoursing and a massive sandstone entranceway. The school was named in honor of Joseph Gales, Jr., the eighth mayor of Washington City. Peterson, an architect for the National Park Service, wrote a letter to Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes. Peterson proposed that relief employment be provided for architects by having them record interesting and historic buildings of all kinds, so as to document their history before they passed into oblivion. Ickes was supportive of the idea. Harry Hopkins, assistant to President Roosevelt, approved the plan, which was to fall under the Civil Works Administration, and later the Works Projects Administration. On November 29 the Washington Post reported that 1,200 architects would be employed for six months to measure, photograph, and prepare drawings of historic public buildings, churches, bridges, homes, and other structures.
