  • American Gangster

  • Shakespeare on Film, Video & Stage
William Shakespeare on Film, Video and Stage Titles in bold red font with an asterisk (*) represent the crème de la crème – first choice titles in each category. These are the titles you’ll probably want to explore first. Titles in bold black font are the second- tier – outstanding films that are the next level of artistry and craftsmanship. Once you have experienced the top tier, these are where you should go next. They may not represent the highest achievement in each genre, but they are definitely a cut above the rest. Finally, the titles which are in a regular black font constitute the rest of the films within the genre. I would be the first to admit that some of these may actually be worthy of being “ranked” more highly, but it is a ridiculously subjective matter. • Race on the Road: from the Periphery to the Centre in Jonathan Kaplan's Love Field
RACE ON THE ROAD: FROM THE PERIPHERY TO THE CENTRE IN JONATHAN KAPLAN’S LOVE FIELD Carmen Indurain Eraso Universidad Pública de Navarra Following a general cinematic trend, the road movie genre in its beginnings relegated the representation of non-whites to the periphery. After analysing the general state of affairs of racial representation in the genre, we witness in the 1990s a timid but remarkable trend to produce “racial” road movies which vindicate the rights of central representation of racial minorities. This paper analyses a representative racial road film, Jonathan Kaplan’s Love Field (1992), in an attempt to show that the road movie’s generic conventions and traditional liberal pedigree may provide a context where the depiction of racial minorities and race relations may finally reach a central status. In the road movie we have an ideogram of human desire and the last ditch search for self, and who is more plagued for hunger and lostness than the socially disenfranchised? (Atkinson 1994:14). 1. RACE ON THE ROAD: A PERIPHERAL PRESENCE While it reminds us of the inner search, a basic trait of the road movie genre, this quotation by Michael Atkinson also makes the significant point that the socially marginalised are liable to experience an even greater need for this personal quest. As members of this underprivileged group together with women, non-whites can feel more intensely the “call to adventure”, to flee from an emotionally retarded society which has failed to integrate them satisfactorily. Thus, given their unfavourable condition in society which has traditionally allotted them a peripheral position as mere accessories to the white male, African Americans, Hispanics or Native ES 27 (2006-7): 75-94 76 CARMEN INDURAIN ERASO American Indians have started to find a central space of cinematic representation in the road genre.

FALL 2002 29 Laughter and Ethnicity in John Leguizamo's One-Man Worlds Miriam M. Chirico John Leguizamo's life is the substance of his art. His unflinching and uncompromising look at his own life and the lives of those closest to him provides the basis for his one-man shows, Mambo Mouth, Spic-O-Rama, the Tony-nominated play Freak and Sexaholix...A Love Story. Leguizamo has stamped his stand-up comic style as a playwright and his energetic characterizations as an actor onto the Broadway stage and the Hollywood screen. As the first Latino performer ever to produce a one-man show on Broadway, he is a spokesperson for a minority culture that vies to be heard within a dominant Anglo-Saxon one, and his dramatic sketches are tinged with a political undercurrent that questions the status quo of race relations in America. Leguizamo never allows his content to become too cerebral or heavy, but instead manipulates the comic impulse to bring his characters to life, providing the audience a means of empathizing with these characters and understanding the social and political issues at stake. Nor are his characters stereotypical representations of race and gender, as sometimes occurs in comedy. Rather, as each character confides his or her story to the audience, the facade they have brazenly put forth begins to erode under their frank admissions of fears and doubts. His characters are earnest and quirky, and derive their appeal not only from the stories they tell but also from the vocal and physical skills Leguizamo brings to each character.

After months of incarceration as a suspected political agitator, Ricky is released. Haunted by the tragic death of his devoted young wife and paralyzed by conflicting feelings of guilt and loyalty to his political tribe, he tries to navigate his way through the minefields created by the constant social upheaval that seems to be ubiquitous in his community, while providing a better life for his 5- year old son. At his home coming party Ricky meets Kemala, a book smart country girl, who lives in the opposing neighborhood, enemy territory. In many ways they are opposites, but what starts as antagonism quickly turns into burning passion. Kemala encourages Ricky to convince his old friends in the community to adopt a more passive approach. To defy the status quo of confrontation, this leads to the inevitable cycle of violence. The big question is, can Ricky and his crew beat the odds and ensure that Better Mus’ Come? Director’s Statement I’ve always been a bit of a cold war junkie, and there was a point in my life where I would watch, read, and research everything I could on geopolitics and espionage in the 20th century.
