Aluzje te mają różnorodny charakter i występują we wszystkich dziedzinach współczesnego życia – od nazw firm i towarów, których rodowód sięga Epoki Świateł – po głębiej zakorzenione w osiemnastowiecznej kulturze zapożyczenia, jakie można napotkać we współczesnej literaturze i filmie. Wiele z tych nawiązań odnosi się bezpośrednio do Podróży Gullivera Jonathana Swifta. W tym anglo– irlandzkim pisarzu amerykański literat Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875–1950) upatrywał patrona własnej twórczości1. W sławnej książce Raya Brudburyego Farenheit 451 (1953) autor zamieścił cytat z dzieła dublińskiego pisarza, który w kontekście całego utworu nabiera charakteru nonkonformistycznego manifestu. Także amerykański pisarz Issac Asimov (1920–1992) umieścił w fabule swojego utworu Shah GiodoG latające miasto, wzorowane na Swiftowskiej Lapucie, którego mieszkańcy terroryzowali ludność żyjącą na stałym lądzie. Również w dwudziestowiecznej literaturze europejskiej można znaleźć przykłady nawiązań do Podróży Gullivera. Za przykład może posłużyć twórczość węgierskiego satyryka i humorysty Frigyesa Karinthy (1887–1938), którego światopogląd, styl pisarski bliskie były swiftowskiemu sceptycyzmowi i pesymizmowi w stosunku do natury ludzkiej oraz perspektyw rozwojowych cywilizacji. Pisarz ten przywołał postać Gullivera w Podróży do Faremido (1916), gdzie opisywał społeczeństwo rządzone przez maszyny, oraz w Capillariach (1921), będących obrazem zbiorowości ludzkiej urządzonej według zasad matriarchalnych2. Podobieństwa do swiftowskiego stylu znajdziemy w Obrazkach z kraju Kuty (1933), w których to Tudor Arghezi (1880–1967) sportretował wady ówczesnych Rumunów3. Bliższe związki z literackimi dokonaniami dziekana katedry św. Patryka w Dublinie znajdujemy szczególnie w dwóch zbiorach utworów Moravi: Marzeniach leniwego (1940) oraz Epidemii (1944)4. Utworem opierającym się na motywach zaczerpniętych z życia i twórczości Jonathana Swifta jest Dom, który zbudował Jonathan Swift Gieorgija Gorina (1940–2000)5. Utwór ten został sfilmowany, ponieważ także reżyserzy filmowi i teatralni inspirowali się Podróżami Gullivera6. Za przykład może tu posłużyć obraz Stanleya Kubricka (1928) Doktor Strangelove, lub jak przestałem się martwić i pokochałem bombę (Dr Starnglove or how I stopped to worry and loved a bomb; 1964), gdzie jeden z obiektów, jakie mają zostać zaatakowane, nosi nazwę Laputa. Dzieło Swifta zaistniało również poza anglosaskim kręgiem kulturowym. Reżyser japońskiego obrazu Tenkū no Shiro Rapyuta przyznawał, że nazwa latającej wyspy z jego filmu została zaczerpnięta z tej osiemnastowiecznej książki. O żywotności kulturowej Podróży Gullivera świadczą również amerykańskie ekranizacje tej powieści (1996 rok) w wersji pełnometrażowej oraz w formie animowanego serialu7. Spostrzeżenia te skłaniają do postawienia pytania, czy powieść Swifta, tak osobliwa i powszechnie komentowana w epoce oświecenia, stanowiła także dla polskiej kultury znaczące źródło inspiracji, oraz, czy jest nim nadal dla 4 J. Pastuszki. Po czterech latach wytwórnia Walta Disneya wyprodukowała pełnometrażowy film animowany dla dzieci i młodzieży pod tytułem Podróże Gullivera (Gulliver’s Travels) w reżyserii Dave’a Fleischera. W powojennej kinematografii sięgnięto po tę powieść jeszcze kilkakrotnie. W 1959 roku powstał film Trzy światy Gullivera (Three Worlds of Gulliver) w reżyserii Bernarda Herrmanna. 1963 roku zrealizowano barwny film (produkcji angielsko–amerykańskiej) o tym samym tytule, wyreżyserowany przez J. Shera. Kolejną próbą ekranizacji powieści Swifta był belgijsko–brytyjski obraz Podróże Gullivera (Gulliver’s Travels; 1977) w reżyserii Petera Hunta. Najnowszą ekranizacją przygód Gullivera był film reżysera Charlesa Sturridge’a do scenariusza Simona Moore’a z 1996 roku, również kierowany do młodych widzów. Z kolei amerykański serial animowany Saban’s Gulliver’s Travels powstał w 1992 roku. Liczył dwadzieścia sześć odcinków i był emitowany przez stacje Jetix Play i Fox Kids, także w niemieckojęzycznej wersji językowej (Gullivers Reisen). W Polsce stacja TVN nadawała ten film w spolszczonej wersji pod tytułem Nowe Podróże Guliwera w reżyserii Dobrosława Bałazy. (B. Pytanie to implikuje kolejne, a mianowicie, w jaki sposób Podróże Gullivera funkcjonowały w świadomości polskich pisarzy XVIII wieku i kolejnych epok, a także jak wpisały się w krajobraz dwudziestowiecznej kultury ojczystej. Rozprawa ta stara się udzielić odpowiedzi na powyższe pytania, przy czym nie pretenduje do pracy w pełni monograficznej, raczej jest ujęciem “monagrafizującym”, ponieważ, mimo że obserwacji poddano epoki od polskiego oświecenia do współczesności, to specjalny nacisk położono na te z nich w literaturze polskiej, które szczególnie obfitowały w motywy swiftowskie – oświecenie i współczesność. Przez “motyw swiftowski” rozumiano różnego rodzaju nawiązania do Podróży Gullivera (cytaty, parafrazy, zapożyczenia fabularne, podobieństwa świata przedstawionego i poruszanej problematyki), jak również do samej osoby Jonathana Swifta. Za podstawę analizy porównawczej przyjęto tłumaczenie powieści dublińczyka dokonane przez Macieja Słomczńskiego w 1979 roku i za tym przekładem przyjęto ortografię nazwiska głównego bohatera. Odstępstwa od tej zasady występują jedynie w tytułach dzieł i są wtedy zgodne z pisownią, jaką wybrał konkretny autor. Pierwsza część dysertacji została poświęcona zjawiskom kultury oświecenia europejskiego. W kolejnych rozdziałach została przybliżona problematyka Podróży Gullivera, sylwetka i działalność Jonathana Swifta oraz najważniejsze przykłady recepcji tego kontrowersyjnego dzieła w literaturze Europy Zachodniej. Druga część rozprawy traktuje o wpływie, jakie wywarło dzieło dziekana katedry św. Patryka w Dublinie na osiemnastowieczną literaturę polską. W kolejnych partiach pracy została omówiona żywotność motywów swiftowskich w następnych, po oświeceniu, formacjach kulturowych. FFGG Część pierwsza ROZDZIAŁ 1 OŚWIECENIE W EUROPIE ZACHODNIEJ 1. 1. La Chanson de Roland (o Canzone di Rolando o Orlando), scritta intorno alla seconda metà dell'XI secolo, è una chanson de geste appartenente al ciclo carolingio, considerata tra le opere più belle della letteratura medievale francese. Essa racconta la battaglia di Roncisvalle, avvenuta il 15 agosto 778, quando la retroguardia di Carlo Magno, comandata dal paladino Rolando prefetto della Marca di Bretagna e dagli altri paladini, di ritorno da una spedizione in Spagna fu attaccata e distrutta dai saraceni, attraverso un'informazione derivante da Gano. Testo La Chanson de Roland è scritta in 4002 décasyllabes, equivalente francese degli endecasillabi italiani, raggruppati in 291 lasse assonanzate da un certo Turoldo. Essa ci è tramandata da nove manoscritti, dei quali il più importante, conservato a Oxford, è in lingua anglo-normanna: il testo originale era invece scritto in lingua d'oïl, lingua volgare della Francia del nord. Il notevole numero di manoscritti rimastoci è testimonianza della grande fortuna del testo; inoltre, il fatto che il testimone più autorevole e antico, quello di Oxford, sia un codice non pregiato o prezioso (tale da farci pensare che fosse un sorta di canovaccio per le esibizioni di un giullare) potrebbe suggerirci che la Chanson de Roland abbia avuto una diffusione orale prima di essere rielaborata e stesa in scrittura (fatto testimoniato anche dalla nota emilianense, un breve testo proveniente da un monastero di San Marzàno de la Cogolla che sembrerebbe attestare la conoscenza della materia del poema già prima della realizzazione del manoscritto di Oxford).

    Gulliver's Travels Gulliver's Travels, or Travels into Several Remote Nations of Gulliver's Travels the World. In Four Parts. By Lemuel Gulliver, First a Surgeon, and then a Captain of Several Ships is a prose satire[1][2] of 1726 by the Irish writer and clergyman Jonathan Swift, satirising both human nature and the "travellers' tales" literary subgenre. It is Swift's best known full-length work, and a classic of English literature. Swift claimed that he wrote Gulliver's Travels "to vex the world rather than divert it". The book was an immediate success. The English dramatist John Gay remarked "It is universally read, from the cabinet council to the nursery."[3] In 2015, Robert McCrum released his selection list of 100 best novels of all time in which First edition of Gulliver's Travels [4] Gulliver's Travels is listed as "a satirical masterpiece". He writes well about the English country and its flowers. His love songs are also sweet. At about this time Edmund Waller wrote some of the earliest heroic couplets, a form of verse which was widely used in the next hundred and fifty years. In this meter a couplet is a pair of lines, rhyming and of five iambic feet. Qualitative method with descriptive approach was used in this study. Techniques for collecting the data were done through following: reading and observing the novel of Gulliver’s Travels, scanning and finding the information of some history of English Literature books and history books, and looking for the information related to the study of the literary theory books to get theories and references as supporting research in this study. M.H. Abrams Theory was used in finding and analyzing this study. The result of the study showed that satire was used by Swift to criticize political and social situation. It was reflected in the story of Gulliver’s Travels. For example, Swift criticize the British government by using the Lilliputians. Keywords: Politics, Gulliver’s Travels, and Satire.     The Politics of Gulliver's Travels In his first three travels Gulliver never encounters primitive peoples. The only people he communicates with or spends time with are all members of highly developed societies. They are all political societies. From the beginning Gulliver's presence in Lilliput presents political problems and he becomes the focus of political intrigue: 'It seems that upon the first Moment I was discovered sleeping on the Ground after my Landing, the Emperor had early Notice of it by an Express: and determined in Council that I should be tyed in the Manner I have related ... ' (I.l; 10). The immediate notification of Gulliver's arrival to the King, the summoning of a council, stress the fact that Lilliput is from our first encounter with it to be envisaged as a political world. The political events and political practices of Lilliput have been related to the political history of England during 1708-1715 by Firth, Case and others. But the power of the book is not just restricted to these particular political allusions: the general satire of the methods of promotion to ministerial office in Lilli put is parodic of the attitude of mind behind and nature of such procedures in any political society. When a great Office is vacant, either by Death or Disgrace, (which often happens) five or six of those Candidates petition the Emperor to entertain his Majesty and the Court with a Dance on the Rope; and whoever jumps the highest without falling, succeeds in the Office. (1.3; 22) The absurdity and valuelessness of these methods, their total irrelevance to the requirements of public life and their inherent ridiculousness, are not restricted to any specific historical time or place.
