2003 2017 Riverside Sport Hall Of Fame H A E L M L OF FA Induction Celebration

The Legacy The effort to form a hall of fame to recognize Riverside’s rich athletic history dates back over 80 years. In 2001, the City Council appointed a task force of prominent citizens to lay the groundwork for the creation of the Riverside Sport Hall of Fame. Dr. Charles Kane, a great fan of “the game” and a former Riverside Community College President, was appointed its first chairperson. Under his direction, the group delivered on the promise to honor Riverside’s sports heroes and celebrate the accomplishments of exceptional student athletes. Dr. Kane’s vision and leadership set RSHOF on a great civic path. It is the organization’s responsibility to continue that journey. Every activity that the Riverside Sport Hall of Fame produces is a tribute to his foresight and is reflective of Riverside’s commitment to celebrate its vibrant history of athletic success and recognize the positive impact athletics has on the lives of Riverside’s youth.

Our Mission The Riverside Sport Hall of Fame is dedicated to fostering an appreciation for the role sports play in contributing to the quality of life in Riverside. The Hall of Fame honors athletes, coaches, athletic administrators and community leaders who have brought fame or honor to the City of Riverside through their involvement in athletics. Furthermore, the Hall of Fame encourages participation in sports among young people by recognizing Riverside student athletes with scholarships; sponsoring local athletic events; and providing sports-related clinics for the benefit of athletes, their coaches and parents. ~

Message from Our Mayor

On behalf of the City of Riverside, I am pleased to welcome everyone to the Riverside Sport Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. This event is always one of the highlights of the year for me as we celebrate the athletic, philanthropic and coaching achievements of Riversiders who have reached a pinnacle of excellence in the sports world. Growing up in Riverside, I often recognize the names of inductees whom I remember from my youth. Riverside is a sports town, make no mistake about it! Riverside athletes and coaches who made their mark in competition in days gone by like Dusty Baker and Ben Hammerschmidt set the stage for Riverside greats like Joanna Hayes and Tom Tilson. We should pause to imagine what future inductee just laced up their first pair of cleats, or found themselves crouched at the starting blocks for their first race. The achievements of our inductees this year are an example of the importance of dedication, hard work and perseverance for everyone in the community. These traits not only make for successful athletes, but also for successful scientists, artists and business people. We look up to elite athletes not just because they are able to do something that we can’t, but because they are able to reach a level of success to which we all aspire. We are proud of you and your accomplishments, and we join with the Sport Hall of Fame in celebrating your achievements. From your Mayor, to all of our 2017 inductees, a hearty “Congratulations and job well done!”

Keep Moving, Mayor Rusty Bailey

2003 2017 Riverside Sport Hall Of Fame H A E L M L OF FA Induction Celebration CLASS OF 2017 JEROME F. WALL, MD, FACS - Contributor Dr. Jerome F. Wall graduated with honors from Loyola University of Chicago, Stritch School of Medicine in 1970. He completed his internship at the John H. Stroger Hospital of Cook County and completed orthopedic surgery residencies at Wesley Pavilion, St. Anne’s Hospital and the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University. Dr. Wall moved to Riverside in 1975 to pursue his dream of working with athletes. He formed the Community Orthopedic Medical Group and was affiliated with Parkview Community Hospital Medical Center and Riverside Community Hospital. For 40 years, Dr. Jerry Wall was an active and visible member of the Riverside sports community. In 1980, he created the SPORT Clinic, which helped thousands of uninsured high school and college athletes by offering on-campus treatment at nominal costs. The SPORT Clinic became Riverside County’s primary source for athletic health care and has successfully treated thousands of young and old athletes. In 1984, Dr. Wall established the non-profit SPORT Foundation, which helps area youth to become future community leaders. He started annual Sports Medicine Seminars and created both the All-Star Football Classic and the Inland Empire Classic. Dr. Jerome F. Wall was one of the visionary leaders responsible for the formation of the Riverside Sport Hall of Fame. He is remembered fondly for his intelligence, civic philanthropy and legendary career as an orthopedic surgeon. TOM TILSON - Coach Tom Tilson was born in Long Beach, and raised in Riverside. He learned to play soccer and fell in love with the game at an early age. During his final year at Cal Poly Pomona, he was hired as a walk on coach to start a soccer program at Riverside Poly High School by Dr. Thorstad, the principal. From that point on, he was a trailblazer on how to conduct a successful soccer program. Tom is known as the “Godfather of High School Soccer” in Riverside because of his distinguished 35-year coaching career. He began in an era when high school soccer was unheard of and players would wear football jerseys while playing. His 621 wins, against just 114 losses and 80 ties, is the most in California Interscholastic Federation history. Tom led the Bears to the 1994 CIF Title and to numerous league championships during his tenure and was named 2007 California Coach of the Year. The Tom Tilson Soccer Tournament, named in his honor, is now an annual high profile sport competition, which attracts the top soccer teams and players in Southern California. Tom is widely known as a true gentleman of the game, one who consistently played by the rules and who was a leader by example. He never received a red card from an official. CHAUNTE HOWARD-LOWE - Post-1970s Athlete At John W. North, Chaunte Howard-Lowe won the National Scholastic Indoor High Jump Championship twice and was the 2001 CIF State Meet High Jump Champion. In 2002, she came in second in the High Jump, Long Jump and Triple Jump, helping the Huskies to the California State Championship. With her help, J.W. North won the State Championship 3 out of her 4 years there. Lowe holds over 11 National Championship titles and has represented the United States of America in four Olympic competitions, making her the only Riverside native to do so. She continues to achieve personal bests in each of her succeeding Olympic competitions. In 2004, she recorded a 1.85m jump in the qualifying round. In 2008, she jumped 1.93 meters for a Bronze medal. In 2012 she jumped 1.99 meters to take 6th place. In 2016, she recorded a 1.97 meter jump for a 3rd place finish, earning another Bronze medal. Her Olympic participation has taken her to Athens, Beijing, London and Rio de Janiero. From 2010 to 2012, she broke the American high jump record 3 times. Chaunte already has her sights on the 2020 Olympics, thus raising the bar even higher for her accomplishments on the world stage.

In football, he was an exceptional All-Citrus Belt League running back in 1953. As a sprinter in track, he ran a 9.9 100-yard dash and a 21.9 220-yard dash and in his senior year was named to the All- Citrus Belt League in 1954. Out of school and working, Marshall later returned to football at Riverside City College, where he was Most Valuable Player and All-Eastern Conference player on the 1960 championship team. In Track, he shattered many school records before being named to the All Citrus Belt League Conference team. Marshall also competed in the High Jump and Long Jump competitions while at RCC. Marshall has lived in Riverside his entire life and has contributed immensely to the Eastside community and the greater Riverside community as well. Early on, he had an understanding of the importance of giving back to his community and demonstrated that belief by being a volunteer coach and positive role model for 25 years in Little League at Patterson Park and for Riverside Junior Tackle Football. During this time, Marshall has helped countless young people to achieve their individual and team goals through education and athletics. ARMANDO MUÑIZ - Post-1970s Athlete Armando Muñiz represented the United States as a welterweight boxer in the 1968 Olympic Games. He fought for world titles on four occasions against the toughest fighters in his weight class, losing closely each time. In one contest with , he had the champion thoroughly beaten through 12 rounds when the fight was inexplicably stopped and awarded to Napoles. Armando became known as the “uncrowned champion” by the press and fans alike who knew that he had won the fight. His 1977 fight with was the first championship fight between two competitors with college degrees. Boxing enthusiasts worldwide loved him because he gave everything that he had in the ring when the bell rang. Armando used the lessons that he learned as a boxer in his post-fight career by becoming a long-time educator and community leader. Beginning in 1987, he became a teacher and wrestling coach at Rubidoux High School, helping countless youth under his direction. He has also served on the Rubidoux Community Services District. Armando has served honorably as the President of the World Boxing Hall of Fame located in Riverside. He originally officiated football, baseball, , , track and professional . In an on-field football officiating career that spanned more than 30 years, he worked games on the Pop Warner, high school, junior college and university levels, establishing himself as one of the finest on the West Coast. Verle refereed three East-West Shrine Games, two Mirage Bowls in Japan and the 1985 Rose Bowl. He also officiated in the United States Football League for two years, working in seven playoff games, including the league’s championship game both years. It is fair to say that without Ron’s vision, invaluable advice and constant support the organization would not exist. Since the very first Induction Celebration in 2003, Ron has continued his membership and attended nearly every event. Ron Loveridge served the City of Riverside for 33 years, as a City Councilman from 1979 to 1994 and as its Mayor from 1994 to December, 2012. When he retired from the office, he made certain that his successor, William R. “Rusty” Bailey, understood the importance of the organization and the need to preserve and memorialize Riverside’s rich sports history. Dr. Loveridge has dedicated his lifetime to leadership. He was the President of both the League of California Cities and National League of Cities and has served on the boards of the California Air Resources Board, South Coast Air Quality Management District, the Southern California Association of Governments, Western Riverside Council of Governments and the March Joint Powers Authority. He currently serves on the Ontario International Airport Authority. He also was recently inducted into the National Academy of Public Administration. He now focuses his attention on the research related to the growth of the suburbs, public policy, urban planning, transportation, air quality and the intersection of cities and natural lands and was named the Director of the Center for Sustainable Suburban Development at the University of California Riverside in January, 2013. Ron is the example of a leader that Dr. Kane truly admired and respected. The Riverside Sport Hall of Fame is pleased and proud to acknowledge former Mayor Ronald O. Loveridge as one of its founders and a truly deserving recipient of the Chuck Kane Leadership Award.
