Prior to going to the major league Spring training his brother Nicholas trained him in their parents' garage with homemade implements. “We used bricks for weights, a homemade sawhorse for dips and a pipe for chins-ups. We did lots of sprints, drills and hitting. He said, ‘ It was the best shape he had been in prior to a spring training’ .”

2013 Season Preview

The 2013 season has approached and at the same me Cajon is saying good-bye to the San Andreas League and is looking forward to compete in the power house Citrus Belt League for the first me in their tenure. The CBL consist of Redlands, Redlands East Valley, Yucaipa, AB Miller, Eisenhower and now Cajon. The San Andreas League has been part of Cajon’s history since the beginning. The SAL has been a league that has truly consisted of a wide range of schools throughout its 40 year history. It is an iconic league that has had teams from all over the . The league started in 1970 with teams such as Bloomington, Norco and Hemet; and now consists of teams such as Rialto, San Gorgonio, and Carter. Cajon High School was the only school to always remain in the San Andres League. We were there from the start and have played teams from the heart of the Inland Empire as well as teams from the High Desert and Low Desert, Barstow to Palm Springs. The pages that follow list all the schools that were once a part of the San Andreas League. Cajon won its first league tle in 1976 and did not win another one unl 21 years later, in 1997. Following that, Cajon began to become an instrumental influence in the sport of baseball by winning several more league tles in 2004, 2005, 2007, and 2008. The SAL has always been home for the Cajon Cowboys but as we advent into a new league, new tradion, and the unknown, the Cowboys will always compete, adapt, improvise, and overcome any obstacles in order to prevail. Going into the CBL, won’t be easy but it is the best me for Cajon as we are returning seven starters from last season plus four starng pitchers. And out of those ten players, six will be part of the varsity program for three seasons. Therefore, the experience is at hand. With the likes of Jusn Hendricks (.293), Jordan Pollard (.224), Mike Quinonez (.311), Kurs Kloke (.338), and Cody Swanson (.259), the Cowboys should compete in the CBL. Also returning is starng shortstop Branden Becker (.291), ouielder, Andrew Rios (.381), pitchers Andy Hammond (2-1-6; 2.37era), Noah Jones (3-3; 1.48era), and Ma Acosta (4-1; 2.35era). Those whom are making their first appearance on the varsity squad are juniors: Angel Becerra, Andrew Estrada, Shawn Neal, and Kyle Schepper; sophomores: Zachary Grande and Taylor Sims. The predicon for the crown of the CBL has Redlands as the favorite but Redlands East Valley and Yucaipa are consistently good and will be again, while Cajon is a sleeper. The CBL consist of a freshman program but Cajon will only have a junior varsity team. Therefore, having a large group of freshman on the JV team will be a challenge facing those with a great deal more sophomores and juniors. However, with the likes of returners: Tony Nunez, Logan Gopperton, Andrew Pina, Jesse Shafer, Jacob Lopez, Mario Espinoza, Jacob Gardner, Teddy Albert, and newcomers: Russell Montana, Gabriel Gordillo, Eric Nunez, Jusn Henry, Gabriel Marn, John Maroda, Mikael Bunse, Anthony Lozano, Mason Corneliussen, Gilbert Abarca, Ryan Bunse, and Brandon Avila they will Act Big, Breathe Big, and Commit Big in order to succeed in the CBL and capture the tle. Mission Statement

The Cajon High School Baseball Team’s mission is to achieve the highest level of success by having each member put the team first above all. Each player must display an outstanding work ethic; furthermore, each player must go above and beyond to make his contribuon to the team. Every player must exhibit a healthy atude to develop trust among its members. Cajon players will present themselves with good values to the public that ensures a posive outlook on the program. Our philosophy works towards developing the characteriscs of a good ball- player as well as an individual being. We believe that as a team we can achieve great things.

T-tenacity: Persistent; Holding together a family "A will to never give up." E-enthusiasm: Enjoys being on the field. "The field is the most exciting place to be." A-achieve: To accomplish Our Goals: Finish with success; to attain or get with effort, as through exertion, skill, practice, or perseverance. M-motivate: Push each other in order for one another to shine!

3 "Love the game for the pure joy of accomplishment. Love the game for everything it can teach you about yourself. Love the game for the feeling of belonging to a group endeavoring to do its best. Love the game for being involved in a team whose members can't wait to see you do your best. Love the game for the challenge of working harder than you ever have at something and then harder than that. Love the game because it takes all team members to give it life. Love the game because at its best, the game tradition will include your contributions. Love the game because you belong to a long line of fine athletes who have loved it. It is now your legacy. Love the game so much that you will pass on your love of the game to another athlete who has seen your dedication, your work, your challenges, your triumphs... and then that athlete will, because of you, love the game." ---Unknown

“I still get such a bang out of it, playing ball. Same as I did when I first came up. You get out there, the stands are full, and everybody is cheering. It is like everybody in the world comes t see you. Inside that there is the players in there and there yakking it up and the pitcher throws and your looking for that pill and suddenly there is nothing else in the ballpark you and it and sometimes when your feeling right and there is a groove here and the bat just eases into it and meet that ball. When the bat meets that ball you can feel that ball jus tgive and you now it is going to go a long way. Damn, if you don’t feel like your going to live forever.” John Cusac as Buck Weaver in Eight Men Out (1988) 4 “Go Cowboys!”

"I still get such a bang out of it, playing ball. Same as I did when I first came up. You get out there, the stands are full, and everybody is cheering. It is like everybody in the world comes to see you. Inside that there is the players in there and there yakking it up and the pitcher throws and your looking for that pill and suddenly there is nothing else in the ball- park you and it and sometimes when your feeling right and there is a groove there and the bat just eases into it and meets that ball. When the bat meets that ball you can feel that ball just give and you know it is going to go a long way. Damn, if you don't feel like your going to live forever." - John Cusac as Buck Weaver in Eight Men Out (1988)
