Georgia Southern University Georgia Southern Falls on Friday at Arkansas State in Extra Innings Austin Thompson leads the way for the Eagles with a 3-for-5 day at the plate Baseball Posted: 5/11/2018 11:37:00 PM BOX SCORE (PDF) JONESBORO, ARK. - Georgia Southern Baseball dropped the series opener to Arkansas State, 6-5 on Friday night in 10 innings. The Eagles scored early, but the Red Wolves bounced back to take a 4-1 lead through five. The Eagles would take the lead in the top of the ninth, but the Red Wolves answered in the bottom of the frame, sending the game to extra innings. A walk-off double to left plated the winning run from first base to hand the Eagles the loss. Game two between the Eagles and Red Wolves is set for Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m. (ET) / 6:30 p.m. (CT). Seth Shuman will climb the mound for the Eagles with a chance to even the series at one game each. SCORING PLAYS Top 3rd - The Eagles strung together a pair of two out hits in the third inning to take an early 1-0 lead. Nolan Tressler singled and reached second on a stolen base. Jason Swan brought Tressler around three pitches later with an RBI single to left. Bottom 4th - The Red Wolves got back on even terms in the fourth with an RBI double to left which scored a run from first to even the game at 1-1. Bottom 5th - A pair of infield hits were sandwiched by a pair of singles to the left side as Arkansas State pushed three runs across in the fifth to push the lead to 4-1. Top 6th - Tyler Martin cut the lead to 4-3 with a mighty swing, driving a ball though a stout breeze over the left field wall for a two-run bomb. Austin Thompson scored on the play after reaching on an infield single. Top 9th - Matt Anderson got the Eagle rally started in the ninth by ripping a double to the gap in left. He exited for a pinch runner who made it to third on a passed ball. A Tressler ground ball to third drove in pinch runner Chandler Corley to tie the game at 4-4. Bottom 9th - A one out double opened the door for the Red Wovles in the bottom of the ninth. After an intentional walk put the force in order, a single though the right side allowed the tying run to score from second with the potential winning run moving up on a fumbled ball in right. A double play, however, got the Eagles out of the ninth and send the game to extra innings. Bottom 10th - A hit batter with one out put the winning run aboard for the Red Wolves. Tipton doubled to left where the ball was fumbled with again, allowing the winning run to scamper home and give Arkansas State a 6-5 win. NOTES - Arkansas State committed five errors on Friday night. - Austin Thompson went 3-for-5 in the game, matching his career high in hits. - Nolan Tressler got the start in the No. 9 slot in the lineup, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. With the multi-hit game, Tressler raised his average above the Mendoza Line for the first time this season. He is hitting 3-for-6 in the last two games. - Starting pitcher Brian Eichhorn exited the game in the sixth inning, working five and two thirds innings, his shortest outing since the season opener at Georgia. He allowed four runs off seven hits with four walks and tallied eight strikeouts. The junior, however, did not factor into the decision. - Cole Whitney worked two and a third no hit innings out of the bullpen with three strikeouts and two walks. He was in line for the win after the Eagles scored in the ninth. - Chase Cohen gave up two runs, one earned off three hits with a strikeout and a walk. He took the loss to fall to 4-4. - The loss drops the Eagles to fourth in the East Division, a half-game behind Troy. The Eagles are 14-10 in league play and would be the No. 5 seed for the Sun Belt Tournament if the regular season ended today. A’s News Clips, Wednesday, May 18, 2011 Oakland A's pound Los Angeles Angels 14-0 By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune Mark Ellis has endured a season-long struggle with the bat. Then how to explain a night such as Tuesday? It all came so easily for Ellis and his A's teammates in a 14-0 stomping of the Los Angeles Angels. The run total was a season high, as was their 15 hits. The A's swept the two-game series and moved into a first-place tie with the Texas Rangers in the American League West. It's the first time the A's have occupied first since June 3 last season, when they also were deadlocked with Texas. Leading the hit parade was Ellis, the second baseman who has shined defensively but has been the invisible man in the batter's box. Sure, he collected three hits Sunday against the Chicago White Sox, but one was a bloop job and another was an infield single. And he did bring home Monday's winning run against the Angels with a fielder's-choice grounder. But he hit the ball with authority Tuesday, finishing 3 for 4 with a season-high four RBIs. That lifted his average from .194 to .210. Ellis was happiest to deliver with runners on base. "I really pride myself on doing good in that situation, and I haven't done that this year," he said. "It's nice to get a couple hits with guys in scoring position." Ellis smoked a run-scoring double off the left-field wall in the A's three-run second.

  • 1 Straddling That Very Fine Mendoza-Daubert Line
STRADDLING THAT VERY FINE MENDOZA-DAUBERT LINE: RESISTING THE TEMPTATION TO CUT CORNERS OR ADVOCATE Tony Wayne CPA, CVA, CFF, CIRA, FCPA April 18, 2016 Thirty years ago, in the midst of an early-season slump, George Brett told reporters, "The first thing I look for in the Sunday papers is who is below the Mendoza line." Brett, who went on to hit .390 that year for the Kansas City Royals, was referring to Mario Mendoza, a light-hitting shortstop for the Seattle Mariners whose surname became synonymous with hitting futility. While the term Mendoza Line has come to symbolize the .200 mark in baseball parlance, the phrase has also crossed over into America's pop culture lexicon and is frequently used to describe almost any type of sub-par performance, from the performance of stocks and mutual funds to bad grades and to quotas for salespeople. A few months ago, I was contacted by a para-legal with a national law firm about possibly assisting them on future lost wage analyses. She tracked me down on the internet (yes, it can happen) and emailed me as follows (emphasis added): We are looking for someone to do some simple economics work for lost wages on a couple of cases. Would you mind sending me your CV? In response, I offered to make the easy trip to their offices on my dime for an intro meeting. Her reply (emphasis added)? Until we have a case that we can talk about specifically, I feel that it would not be beneficial for you to make the trip.

  • Fred Worth Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Statistics
The Worst Hitters in Baseball History by Fred Worth Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Statistics Abstract In this paper we are going to look at several metrics for determining the worst hitter in major league baseball history. Introduction Books have been written trying to determine who have been the best hitters in baseball history. In this paper, we are going to consider the opposite end of the baseball talent spectrum. We are going to look at the worst hitters in baseball history. But first, a disclaimer. Disclaimer There have been some people who have played major league baseball who had no business doing so. Eddie Gaedel, for instance, had no business wearing a major league uniform. In the early years of major league ball, teams often did not have very large rosters. Sometimes on a road trip they would even leave some of their players home. Then, if a player was hurt, they would be short-handed. To fix that, they might ask the crowd, "who wants to play?" They might get someone who can play. But sometimes they got someone who had no business walking on a baseball field. In more recent years, however, if a man makes it to the major leagues, he is NOT a bad hitter. Such things are relative. He may be the worst hitter in the league but the league is made up of the best baseball players in the world. So, with the exception of Gaedel, and maybe one or two other flukes, when I say "worst hitters," I realize I am describing men who are far better than I ever was.

  • Greil Marcus's Real Life Rock
“Put Me In, Coach, I’m Ready to Play”: Greil Marcus’s Real Life Rock 1. Between 1978 and 1983, Greil Marcus (“GM”) wrote a music column called “Real Life Rock.”1 Ironically named after a strikingly pretentious album title (Magazine’s Real Life), this column ended with a “top ten” list.2 In his short introduction to Real Life Rock, a massive book that brings together all of the “Real Life Top Ten” entries that he published in various magazines between 1986 and 2014,3 GM says that the subject matter of an entry could be “anything,” “anything under the sun” – “songs, albums, commercials, ads, maybe a comment on a dress Bette Midler wore at an awards show.” In time, “anything” came to include “music, movies, fiction, critical theory, ads, television shows, remarks overheard waiting in line, news items, [and] contributions from correspondents,” and then, later still, it took in “more formal art, more politics, more novels, more critical absurdities.” In short, GM’s “Real Life Top Ten” column was (and still is) a series of well-chosen citations of and highly educated responses to American culture, to America’s vibrant cultural life, as it was (and still is) experienced day to day by a particular human being with a love of language and a real gift for observation.4 2. Many of the entries contained in Real Life Rock are reviews, that is to say, judgments of aesthetic value and interest. These reviews can be positive or negative (check this out, but avoid that), which somewhat complicates the 1-to-10 ranking system (how can a “negative” review of something appear higher on the list than a “positive” review of something else?).
