Billroth, Theodor Billroth, Theodor 26.04.1829 Bergen–06.02.1894 Opatija Chirurgie Christian Albert Theodor Billroth wurde am 26. April 1829 als Sohn des Pastors Karl Theodor Billroth (1800–1834) und Christina, geborene Nagel, in Bergen auf Rügen geboren. Billroth besuchte das Gymnasium in Greifs– wald, danach begann er 1848 an der dortigen Universität seine Studien. Zu Beginn seiner Studienzeit widmete er sich mehr der Musik, entschloss sich dann aber doch für Medizin. Er studierte neben Greifswald in Göttingen und Berlin – lernte unter anderem bei Johannes Peter Müller, Moritz Heinrich Romberg, Johann Lukas Schönlein und Ludwig Traube. Nach seiner Promotion 1852 in Berlin besuch– © Medizinische Universität Wien, Bildarchiv te Billroth 1853 Wien und hörte dort Kurse von Ferdinand von Hebra, Richard Heschl und Johann von Oppolzer, später ging er auch nach Paris. Von 1853 bis 1860 wirkte Billroth als Assistent bei Bernhard von Langen– beck an der Charité in Berlin. 1856 habilitierte er sich als Privatdozent in den Fächern Chirurgie und Pathologische Anatomie. Im Jahr 1858 heira– tete er Christel Michaelis, die Tochter des Hofmedikus Edgar Michaelis. 1858 wurde ihm eine Professur für Pathologische Anatomie in Greifswald angeboten, die er aber ablehnte. 1859 erhielt Billroth einen Ruf als Pro– fessor an die Chirurgische Klinik der Universität Zürich, am 1. April 1860 trat er dieses Amt an. In Zürich schrieb er seine bekannten pathologisch- anatomischen Arbeiten und schuf die Grundlagen für die „wissenschaft– liche Chirurgie“. Er lehnte 1862 einen Ruf nach Rostock und 1864 einen nach Heidelberg ab und wechselte 1867 von Zürich nach Wien. Dort übernahm er die II. Chirurgische Lehrkanzel, die er bis an sein Lebensende innehatte. In seiner Zeit in Zürich beschäftigte sich Billroth mit der Ursache des Wundfiebers und den akzidentellen Wundkrankheiten, in Wien entstand dazu das Werk über „Coccobacteria septica“. Dieses Werk war zwar bald überholt, stellt aber dennoch ein Standardwerk der Bakteriologie dar. In den Werken „Die allgemeine chirurgische Pathologie und Therapie“ und den klinischen Berichten legt Billroth Rechenschaft ab über seine Leis– tungen in der Züricher und Wiener Klinik. In der Chirurgie sind Billroth wichtige Fortschritte zu verdanken. Am 31. Dezember 1873 gelang ihm die erste Exstirpation eines Kehlkopfes. Auch die erste erfolgreiche Magenresektion wurde am 29. Jänner 1881 von Billroth bei einem Magenkrebspatienten durchgeführt. Durch seinen Einsatz wurde das Rudolfinerhaus, eine Lehranstalt für Krankenpflege, und das Haus der Gesellschaft der Ärzte geschaffen. Am 6. Februar 1894 starb Theodor Billroth in Opatija. Auf dem Wiener Zentralfriedhof fand er in einem Ehrengrab seine letzte Ruhe.     FRANCIS LAMBERT OF AVIGNON: (1487-1530) A Study in Reformation Origins ROY LUTZ rt INTERS Thesis, submitted to the University of Edinburgh, Faculty of Divinity, for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. 1936 II PREFACE The purpose of tnis dissertation is to present for the first time to English readers an account of the life of Fran­ cis Lambert of Avignon as well as to show the place which he filled in the drama of the Reformation. Various short sketches of his career are found in French, German and Latin writings and many references to him have been made by English historians. A German, Johann Wilhelm Baum, produced in 1840 a biography entitled "Franz Lambert von Avignon", which is rated as the best work on this subject. But as far as the writer is aware no competent study has appeared in English. To obtain first hand information of the activities in wnich the subject of this thesis engaged, the author visited a number of the places in which Lambert lived and laboured. Included among these are Basel, Eisenach, Frankenberg, Homberg, karburg, Metz, Strasbourg, Wittenberg and Zurich. An endeavour is made in the following pages to depict the man in his various aspects - as friar, as wanderer for the sake of the Gospel and as reformer and theological professor; and at the same time to outline uis scheme of church government and the religious doctrines tnat animated, him. It is a historical apocalyptic text that claims authorship by the biblical character Ezra, but there is no question that it is the pseudonymous product of a much later Syriac-speaking Christian author who writes in response to the Arab conquests and subsequent consolidation of Arab political and religious dominance under the caliphate. Ps.-Ezra is a brief work, but an enigmatic one, and has received only scant scholarly attention. Although nineteenth- century translations based on three individual manuscripts were made into German, French, and English respectively, no critical edition or full-scale study based on multiple manuscripts has yet appeared.
