March 16-31, 2016 Sainik Samachar 7 Interview | Commandant of OTA Gaya

t Gen Vinod Vashisht, Commandant, OTA in an interview with Mr Hasibur Rahman, Editor-in-Chief, Sainik LSamachar about Training activities, facilities and challenges of Officers Training Academy, Gaya.

Officers Training Academy Gaya is the youngest training academy of the Army. Is it fully functional and capable to achieve the mandated objectives? Yes, of course. The Academy was established in July 2011. In less than five years, the transformation from the erstwhile Training Centre for ASC to an Officers Training Academy is an example worthy of emulation. Today the Academy is totally functional to train 400 Gentlemen Cadets with planned expansion for training capacity of 750 once the infrastructure is in place. The aspect of transformation of a Training Centre involved reorientation of facilities of training recruits, simultaneous to creation of new features and a totally new curriculum. Optimisation of existing infrastructure and realignment of training have been undertaken with military precision and ethos. Credit goes to efforts of all ranks assigned to the Academy, particularly the previous Commandants degree at MCME, Secunderabad, CME Pune or MCTE and support of Army Training Command, Central Mhow and finally pass out from here. The infrastructure is in place to train these numbers. Average strength at the Academy has been 310 plus in past years. Slightly less number of cadets is due to ‘Quality Control’ exercised in selection at the selection centers which cannot be compromised. We also train cadets from friendly foreign countries i.e. Bhutan and Vietnam. Currently there are eight such cadets. What are your areas of focus? All Pre Commission Training Academies are mandated to provide the Nation military leaders who are physically strong, mentally robust, morally upright and intellectually inquisitive. Our Academy also endeavours to attain this mandate earnestly. March 16-31, 2016 Sainik Samachar 29 Former Editor Sainik Samachar no more

ver the years Sainik Samachar has been retelling tales of valour and duty with unflinching passion. One Oof the pillars in the editorial section of the magazine Mr Shahid Anwar was largely instrumental in bringing to life many such issues worth preserving. Recently this soldier with a pen passed away while still in service as Assistant Director, Publications Division, of Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. An officer of the Indian Information Service, he was one of the longest serving Assistant Editors of Sainik Samachar and contributed immensely. He was also the Broadcasting Officer for DPR Defence. Many generations of soldiers from all rank and file knew him personally. We, the DPR family are deeply shocked at the sad and untimely demise of Mr Shahid Anwar on March 1, 2016. His sudden death at the age of 53 has caused immense grief to everybody in the organisation. We pray to the Almighty to give strength to his family and dear ones in this hour of bereavement. May his soul rest in peace. In this issue we pay a tribute to late Mr Shahid Anwar.
