A variety of qualitative data collection techniques were employed including document analysis, direct observation, interviews with staff, and focus group discussions with student participants. The species Seriola dumerili displays rapid growth during development as a juvenile progressing to an adult. It is the largest species of the family of jacks. At adulthood, S. dumerili would typically weigh about 80kg and reach a length of 1.8-1.9m. Sexual maturity is achieved between the age of 3-5 years, and females may live longer and grow larger than males (FAO, 2016). S. dumurili are rapid-moving predators as shown by their body form (Fig. 1) (FLMNH, 2016). The adult is silvery-bluish in colour, whereas the juvenile is yellow-green. It has a characteristic goldish side line, as well as a dark band near the eye, as seen in Figs 1 and 2 (FAO, 2016; MarineBio, 2016; NCDEQ, 2016). DISTRIBUTION. S. dumerili is native to the waters of Trinidad and Tobago. Typically pelagic, found between depths of 10-360m, the species can be described as circumglobal. In other words, it is found worldwide, as seen in Fig. 3, though much more rarely in some areas, for example the eastern Pacific Ocean (IUCN, 2016). Due to this distribution, there is no threat to the population of the species, despite overfishing in certain locations. Migrations do occur, which are thought to be linked to reproductive cycles.

October 19 2006 1 Background Latanyé (Coccothrinax barbadensis) is a palm native to Saint Lucia. Its leaves are used to make craft and brooms. Latanyé is generally distributed throughout the Windward and Leeward Islands, including Trinidad and Tobago. Latanyé’s natural habitat ranges from “littoral and scrub woodlands near the coast, from sea level to 200 metres elevation”. (L. John 2001). The morphology of the leaves makes the plant resistant to strong wind currents. As it can grow on marginal soils, and appears to be tolerant against pests and diseases, Latanyé may be considered as an ideal plant for soil conservation works to reduce the rate of land degradation in St. Lucia. Figure 1 Photo of a Latanyé Plant Traditional Harvest of Latanyé Leaves In an ideal sustainable harvesting system, the older or mature Latanyé leaves are harvested and that the remainder of the plant regenerates and produces new leaves. 5 to 7 Latanyé leaves and a sturdy broom handle are used to make large brooms. Latanyé Broom (3- 5 days) Lyndon John (2001) described the broom industry in a socio economic context in 2001. The study revealed that Latanyé wild stocks were harvested “year round” to maintain livelihoods of rural people because of the available market and high demand for leaves for making brooms.

It is prevalent in tropical regions worldwide, including in Australia. Ciguatoxins are produced by some species of Gambierdiscus. Therefore, screening of Gambierdiscus species identification through quantitative PCR (qPCR), along with the determination of species toxicity, can be useful in monitoring potential ciguatera risk in these regions. In Australia, the identity, distribution and abundance of ciguatoxin producing Gambierdiscus spp. is largely unknown. In this study we developed a rapid qPCR assay to quantify the presence and abundance of Gambierdiscus lapillus, a likely ciguatoxic species. We assessed the specificity and efficiency of the qPCR assay. The assay was tested on 25 environmental samples from the Heron Island reef in the southern Great Barrier Reef, a ciguatera endemic region, in triplicate to determine the presence and patchiness of these species across samples from Chnoospora sp., Padina sp.
