Citation Analysis for the Modern Instructor: an Integrated Review of Emerging Research
CITATION ANALYSIS FOR THE MODERN INSTRUCTOR: AN INTEGRATED REVIEW OF EMERGING RESEARCH Chris Piotrowski University of West Florida USA Abstract While online instructors may be versed in conducting e-Research (Hung, 2012; Thelwall, 2009), today’s faculty are probably less familiarized with the rapidly advancing fields of bibliometrics and informetrics. One key feature of research in these areas is Citation Analysis, a rather intricate operational feature available in modern indexes such as Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar, and PsycINFO. This paper reviews the recent extant research on bibliometrics within the context of citation analysis. Particular focus is on empirical studies, review essays, and critical commentaries on citation-based metrics across interdisciplinary academic areas. Research that relates to the interface between citation analysis and applications in higher education is discussed. Some of the attributes and limitations of citation operations of contemporary databases that offer citation searching or cited reference data are presented. This review concludes that: a) citation-based results can vary largely and contingent on academic discipline or specialty area, b) databases, that offer citation options, rely on idiosyncratic methods, coverage, and transparency of functions, c) despite initial concerns, research from open access journals is being cited in traditional periodicals, and d) the field of bibliometrics is rather perplex with regard to functionality and research is advancing at an exponential pace. Based on these findings, online instructors would be well served to stay abreast of developments in the field. Until a perfect solution is found, Jørgen Carling writes that self-archiving, while not perfect, allows researchers to bring their work out from behind paywalls without jeopardizing academic integrity, and, at no cost. Most academic journals allow authors to post their articles online after a while, for instance 12 or 18 months after publications. Very few social scientists do, unfortunately. Making publications available in this way is referred to as ‘green open access’ or ‘self-archiving’. While the debates about open access and the future of academic publishing continue, self-archiving is something most authors could do right away to make their work more widely available. To start self-archiving, you must be aware that an article exists in three important versions: 1) the version that you originally submitted; 2) the version that was eventually accepted for publication, after peer review; and 3) the published version incorporating copy-editing, layout and correction of proofs. It is version 2 that you are usually allowed to post after a certain period of time, never version 3. The difference between your final text (version 2) and the copy-edited published text (version 3) would usually make little difference to the general reader. Part of the argument for open-access publishing is indeed that science should become more widely available to all, not just people with access to university libraries. -

In an era of intense emphasis on measuring academic performance, there has been a proliferation of scandals, questionable behaviors and devious stratagems involving not just individuals but also organizations, including universities, editors and reviewers, journal publishers, and conference organizers. This introduction first reviews the literature on the prevalence of academic misconduct, misrepresentation and gaming (MMG). The core of the article is organized around a life-cycle model of the production and dissemination of research results. We synthesize the findings in the MMG literature at the level of the investigator or research team, emphasizing that misbehavior extends well beyond fabrication and falsification to include behaviors designed to exaggerate or to mislead readers as to the significance of research findings. MMG is next explored in the post-research review, publication, and post-publication realms. Moving from the individual researcher to the organizational level, we examine how MMG can be engaged in by either journals or organizations employing or funding the researchers. -

Some of the proposed amendments are minor, while others represent radical changes to the existing legislation. Many of the proposed amendments, if carried through, may benefit foreign applicants, which are the source of most patent applications in Israel. The deadline for filing comments was 7 April 2021. It remains to be seen how the process will develop. This article discusses the proposed amendments and the effect that they may have on the Israeli patent system. Easing of regulatory burden The proposed amendments follow a 2014 government resolution which provides that all government offices should reduce their regulatory burden. Accordingly, many of the proposed amendments clearly relate to reducing the regulatory burden which results from filing patent applications. For example, the request for comments asked applicants about the removal of the Patent Office requirement that parties must disclose any publications cited by any patent offices in other countries. The request for comments also asked applicants about the introduction of a grace period, which would give parties one year following the first publication of their invention to file a patent application. Without a grace period, an inventor's patent rights can be undermined where, for example, they discuss their new research at a conference. -

Abstract Four alternatives to the journal Impact Factor (IF) indicator are compared to find out their similarities. Together with the IF, the SCImago Journal Rank indicator (SJR), the EigenfactorTM score, the Article InfluenceTM score and the journal h- index of 77 journals from more than ten fields were collected. Results show that although those indicators are calculated with different methods and even use different databases, they are strongly correlated with the WoS IF and among each other. These findings corroborate results published by several colleagues and show the feasibility of using free alternatives to the Web of Science for evaluating scientific journals. This reference list manipulation (RLM) could take place during the peer-review process (e.g., coercive citation from editors or reviewers), or prior to it (e.g., a quid-pro-quo between authors). Surveys have estimated how many people may have been affected by coercive RLM at one time or another, but it is not known how many authors engage in RLM, nor to what degree. Examining a subset of active, highly published authors (n=20,803) in PubMed, we find the frequency of non-self citations (NSC) to one author coming from one paper approximates Zipf’s law. We propose the Gini Index as a simple means of quantifying skew in this distribution and test it against a series of “red flag” metrics that are expected to result from RLM attempts. -

Here we identify the 250 most heavi- ly used journals in each of 26 research fields (4,721 journals, 19.4M articles in total) indexed by the Scopus database, and test whether topic, academic status, and accessibility make articles from these journals more or less likely to be referenced on Wikipedia. We find that a journal’s academic status (im- pact factor) and accessibility (open access policy) both strongly increase the probability of its being ref- erenced on Wikipedia. Controlling for field and impact factor, the odds that an open access journal is referenced on the English Wikipedia are 47% higher compared to paywall journals. One of the implica- tions of this study is that a major consequence of open access policies is to significantly amplify the dif- fusion of science, through an intermediary like Wikipedia, to a broad audience. Krueger’s analysis of the music industry in his book Rockonomics: A Backstage Tour of What the Music Industry Can Teach Us About Economics and Life as a lens to consider the structure of scholarly publishing and what could happen to scholarly publishing going forward. Both the music industry and scholarly publishing are facing disruption as their products become digital. Digital content provides opportunities to a create a better product at lower prices and in the music industry this has happened. Scholarly publishing has not yet done so. Similarities and differences between the music industry and scholarly publishing will be considered. Like music, scholarly publishing appears to be a superstar industry. Both music and scholarly publishing are subject to piracy, which threatens revenue, though Napster was a greater disrupter than Sci-Hub seems to be. It also appears that for a variety of reasons market forces are not effective in driving changes in business models and practices in scholarly publishing, at least not at the rate we would expect given the changes in technology. After reviewing similarities and differences, the prospects for the future of scholarly publishing will be considered. David W.
