The sultanate, a small oil exporter, raised funds through a syndicated loan at 120 basis points over the London interbank offered rate (Libor), Nasser Al-Jashmi, under-secre- tary at the ministry of finance, told Reuters on Thursday. Eleven banks took part in the five-year loan. The country has become the latest Gulf government to seek funds from either the international bond or loan market to plug budget deficits opened up by the decline in oil, which has lost three-quarters of its value since June 2014. Qatar closed a $5.5 billion five-year loan earlier this month and Sharjah, one of the United Arab Emirates, has started meeting investors for a potential sukuk this week. Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait are also expected to make a rare for- ay into the international debt market this year. Oman began seeking a five-year loan in November, offering 110 basis points over Libor. It had to raise that after rating agency Standard & Poor’s downgrad- ed the country’s debt and retained a negative outlook . “The untimely down- grade of Oman by Standard and Poor’s to the brink of investment grade, just after the offering was launched, hurt sentiments towards the deal further,” one of the bankers said. Crowded loan markets towards the end of 2015, with Qatar and several bank and corporate issuers all seeking funds at the same time, added to the pricing pressure. However, Oman priced the loan before oil slumped another 20 percent in the first two weeks of 2016, towards $30 per barrel, and geopolitical tension erupted between Saudi Arabia and Iran. Both could have pushed the borrow- ing rate higher. The 11 banks participating in the loan include Citigroup, Gulf International Bank and Natixis, who were the initial bookrunners for the trans- action. The other banks are National Bank of Abu Dhabi, Societe Generale, Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, JP Morgan, Credit Agricole, Standard Chartered and Europe Arab Bank. Oil’s plunge since 2014 has hit Oman’s finances hard. It swung to a deficit of 3.26 billion rials in the first 10 months of the year from a surplus of 189.6 million rials a year earlier. To bridge the deficit, Oman has begun spending cuts, tax ris- KUWAIT: A six-year-old Kuwaiti recently realized his dream of flying in Ministry of Interior’s opera- es and fuel subsidy reforms. Physics The Big Bang: New light on an old theory This lesson explores the evidence for the Big Bang theory of the origin of the Universe. In it, you will learn about the following: • Using the electromagnetic spectrum (EMS) to define radiation. • The Big Bang origin of the Universe theory. • What is the cosmic microwave background and how does this support the Big Bang theory? • Universe or Multiverse? Get ready for extragalactic time travel as we squeeze and bend our way through this space-time lesson. This is a print version of an interactive online lesson. To sign up for the real thing or for curriculum details about the lesson go to www.cosmosforschools.com Introduction: The Big Bang (P1) Scientists say they have just made a discovery that will help explain how our Universe began. If they are right, it could be the biggest, most exciting event in physics ever. Looking through a telescope into the clear skies over the South Pole, scientists spotted what they say is evidence of gravitational waves, or ripples in space-time, from the split second after the birth of the Universe – what scientists call the Big Bang. What’s got everyone so excited by this is that Albert Einstein predicted the existence of gravitational waves when he described how space and time were related and could be bent by huge forces of gravity. What the scientists at the South Pole think they saw was not gravitational waves – they would be invisible – but the effect of the waves on the light left over from the Big Bang.

The events were part of a joint 2018-19 research project called Song lines on the road – Life lines on the move! Text by Lizzie Wade & photos by Nick Russell 26 Illustration: Sandbox Studio symmetry | volume 7 issue 3 june 2010 In the summer of 1928, the young Ernest O. Lawrence set out across America in a Flying Cloud coupe to begin his new life at the University of California, Berkeley. Eighty-one years later, a writer and a photographer took a road trip to visit the legacy of this accelerator-physics pioneer: American Big Science. 27 Every good cross-country road trip needs a theme. Sure, you can drive across the United States in three days flat, heading in a straight line on impersonal interstates and stopping at the occasional Waffle House for sustenance. But that doesn’t do justice to the great American tradition of the road trip, heading from sea to shining sea with the windows down and the radio on. From On the Road to Easy Rider, we’ve learned that the destination isn’t the point—it’s how you get there that counts. So when my boyfriend Nick Russell and I decided to drive from New York City to Los Angeles last summer, we weighed various options for our theme: The always-classic National Parks? The quirkier tour of Elvis museums? Major cities? Small towns? Desert, mountains, prairie? Uninspired, we threw out ideas for stops along the way. Marfa, Texas— good art, family friends, and UFO lights in the desert. Pueblo, Colorado—the Rocky Mountains, a friend’s parents, and Casa Bonita, a cross between a Mexican restaurant and Disneyland. Petersburg, Kentucky—the Creation Museum, devoted to disproving evolution, which we ultimately decided was not for us.

For everyone except Ithe most strident atheist (although I suspect that even s/he has at one point considered the same feeling), staring into space can be a stark reminder that the universe is much grander than we could ever imagine, which may cause us to contemplate who or what might have put this universe together.
